You can't have a trip like ours and not mentally note things that deserve recognition, and sadly some things that deserve to be highlighted for their not so good qualities. These awards are representative of the good and bad things of our trip. So here in a blaze of smoke and lazers are the 2007 Trip Awards! "Cue Strobes!" "Lighting in five, four, three...." " You're on guys- just follow the autocue on camera three" * Drumroll * "Here, broadcast live from a secret location in the Buckinghamshore countryside are the two thousand and seven TRIP AWARDS!!! Please give a warm welcome to our hosts, Max and Clare!!" * Rapturous applause from the audience* Max: "Thank you, thank you. Oh stop, thank you! Welcome to the inaugural awards and thank you for being here to celebrate ... read more

Last Stop Rio!

When a journey takes 24 hours, involves 4 flights and an 8 hour stopover at Lima airport because BA negleted to tell you that the flight time had changed from 20.10 to 23.55, you just hope to God that the final destination is worth all the effort! Thankfully for us, the destination was Rio, our final port of call before heading back to the real world. Rio is dubbed one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It took us a few days to realise this as at first it rained solidly and in Rio there isn't much you can do in the rain, as life there revloves around the beach and the sun. So we spent days one and two wandering around the shops, buying dirt cheap Havaiana flip flops and struggling to communicate ... read more

Our mission - which we chose to accept, was the four day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I am delighted that it has worked out to be my turn to write this blog entry which is about the best thing by some distance that we have both ever done. It is also about the hardest thing by some distance that we have both ever done, and therefore the most magical and worthwhile! Personally it probably takes the award as the most surreal also - I couldn't quite convince myself that I really WAS in Peru, trekking through the Andes. Cusco It all started with a decent enough flight over to Lima from Santiago and a connection from there to Cusco. For anyone connecting in Lima please note there is a six dollar departure tax that no-one ... read more

Hola! ¿Cómo está? Dar la bienvenida Chile! Obviously after two and a half days in Santiago we are now fluent in Spanish, but for those of you that are a bit rusty the translation is 'Hello! How are you? Welcome to Chile!'. We finally got here after an eleven hour flight in a special time machine that enabled us to land in Santiago four hours before we left Auckland, all very bizarre. Having just had our Saturday afternoon and night we had to go through the whole thing again, which also meant that we had a terrible nights sleep on the 19th May twice over...once on a plane and once in bed with horrendous jet lag which meant we were wide awake at midnight until five am! Anyway that aside, our visit to Chile has ... read more

A Tale of Two Islands

A miraculous thing happened to us almost as soon as we arrived here on North Island - we actually managed to pick up some radio stations. Many long, arduous car journeys had passed on South Island with the odd crackle, and if we were lucky, and I mean really lucky, some background fuzz. Not so here on North, it's like a land of noise in comparison. Still rubbish radio, but anything is better than nothing when you're heading for 300km away with nothing to entertain you but the outside crosswinds, a bottle of water and the occasional overtaking idiot. I must say that to anyone reading this, if you have not been to New Zealand and sometime get the chance to do so, we can both highly recommend you take that chance. One of the first ... read more

Its true what they say about New Zealand - it really is one of the most stunning places in the world. We seem to have unintentionally stumbled across this county at one of the prettiest times of year, autumn. All the trees are golden and red, and when the sun shines and the sky is blue it is literally breathtaking. Its fair to say that we are loving it here, we just wish we had more time. Our only grumble is that it takes so long to get anywhere. Max is doing most of the driving, so by the time we get to our destination he is knackered, and understandably wants a rest. I think we have done about 1800km so far, of which I have probably driven sixty.. Yes a whole 60km! (don't laugh) I ... read more

Firstly, please let me apologise for any forthcoming grammatical errors but I am trying to listen to Norwich v Ipswich commentary courtesy of Radio Norfolk, and come up with a mildly interesting article at the same time - two things at once is pushing it.... So, Melbourne - not just the home of Melbourne Cricket Ground, Neighbours and Melbourne Bitter. Oh no, it is also home to Telstra Dome, Channel Seven and Victoria Bitter. These alone are more than enough reasons why anyone enjoys Melbourne. For those who are not already convinced there is also great restaurants, pubs, shopping and even free tourist trams to ferry you around. There are of course, certain similarities between Melbourne and Sydney. They are both full of Australians, they also both have Telstra Domes which has confused me no end. ... read more

The Great Ocean Road

Take one car, one ocean, one road, two people, two states, several limestone rocks, beaches, kangaroos and koala's and what do you have? The Great Ocean Road. Well they call it that but whilst it is indeed great, and certainly is a road, only part of it is actually besides the ocean! However the fact that this bit is spectacular more than makes up for this oversight. We picked up our little hire car (which I aptly named 'Bluey' because it was blue!) and set off out of Adelaide towards Robe, a small fishing village about four hours away. Getting out of Adelaide proved to be the hardest bit...shall we just say that sometimes Australian signposts are a little too subtle! The rest of the drive was a dream...we hardly saw another car, and this ... read more

See what I did with the title there? Poor really wasnt it? A sense of relief has overcome me as I slide into the computer seat and finally get to writing up about Adelaide. We are actually nowhere near Adelaide - I am writing from Apollo Bay, our fourth stop since hitting the trail out of Adelaide towards The Great Ocean Road and eventually Melbourne. I seem to have been meaning to write it for days, infact I have tried once before, but without much success due to it being after an evening at the pub earlier on the road. Best to leave it, we thought... So we stayed just around the corner from Rundle Mall, which is the main shopping area in the centre of Adelaide. The YHA was nice, with a good atmosphere ... read more

Sydney has turned out to be the perfect antidote to Beijing. We have felt truly relaxed and at home here, although we are a little disappionted that no-one has asked us to pose for a photo with them! I guess its because here we just blend in with the scenery, and we are not complaining! Being our second visit in five months, we immediately got back into the swing of things. On our first evening we headed staight for one of my favourite restaurants in the world, Wolfie's Grill. We had a lovely meal to treat ourselves courtesy of Mastercard, and sat back and admired the view of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge whilst sipping on our drinks. I was particularly glad to have a glass of Australian wine in my hand as I ... read more
