Day 2 in London Europe » United Kingdom » England » London By The Martini sJune 18th 2007Kelly Martin Today we were privileged to attend the Order of the Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle. This is the oldest British Order of Chivalry and was started in 1348 by Edward III. The King or Queen has an Order of 25 knights and they are knighted into the Garter every year on this day. There is a royal procession from the Castle to the Chapel and then tea. The British do pageantry like no other place in the world. The event was truly amazing and there is no real way to describe the ... read more

I'm at home right now, but thought I'd try out my first entry. As I've not done anything yet I suppose I'll use this to go over what I'm doing in Africa. I hope to update my travel blog with photos and entries whenever I get the chance. I leave London for Cape Town, South Africa on 27th June with Matt Powell, a friend I met while working for Deloitte. After spending a couple of days in Cape Town, hopefully going up to Table Mountain (a large rock/small mountain in Cape Town), we start our tour proper with Acacia. Acacia are a tour operator who use large converted trucks to cart tourists across Africa on overland tours. There'll be 22 others with us and the tour will last 41 days covering 7 different countries over thousands ... read more

Dating back to the 17th century this English parade is to celebrate the Sovereign's birthday ie. The Queen. Although the Queen's birthday is actually in April she celebrates it in June in hope of better weather. Well that was not the case this year. It was overcast, cold and rainy. The parade is carried out by her personal troops, the Household Division, on Horse Guards Parade, with the Queen herself attending and taking the salute. Since 1987 the Queen has attended in a carriage (with a blanket on her knees this year). She used to ride side saddle in the parade up until then. That would be a sight. It was only due to Nick seeing the parade advertised on t.v that we knew about it and decided to brave the weather to see it. ... read more

Its been 2 long years planning all of this. If I'm honest..it doesnt seem like enough planning has been done. But my trusty stead (Jess) is now at my side grabbing my hand everytime she thinks i get that mad gleaming look in my eyes! Things are a bit chaotic in Bingley Road, however, Jess and I have managed to both take a nap and catch up on Grey's anatomy and ER. Obviously not really worth watching as we'll be out of the loop very soon. Jess keeps nagging me to download all the episodes..however..packing, shopping and getting some currency seem like priorities to me..not checking up on mcDreamy and McSteamy (although Gawking at them both are particularly pleasurable)! Mum keeps calling home to make sure that I have done everything on the 'to do' list....I'm ... read more

Today we woke up early to go to a tour and class at the Globe Theater. The theater was built for Shakespeare and where most of his plays were preformed. Its actually a replica just down the road from where the original one used to be. We are going to see The Merchant of Venice tomorrow so that should be really exciting. I need to read the play tomorrow before we go. Other than that we just went to class today and then spent a few hours at STA travel trying to book a trip to Paris. We also booked a trip to go to Dublin. I’m really excited that we get to see other parts of Europe outside of London. ... read more

Whew! I am exhausted! I think it's a combination of a full day of work, little sleep, and a busy first week! I'll probably end up going to bed after i finish this (it's only 8:45 pm here!) jeesh! I'm starting to sound like my father! haha. Anyways, the first day of work went really well. It was a little long and not too eventful today, but I think it was just because it was my first day and I'm just settling in. All of the people were really nice... once I got there, everyone came up and personally introduced themselves to me. Very friendly atmosphere. Today I had a lot of meetings and introductory stuff--learning how their computer system works, office induction (basically a tour of the office), had a meeting with the marketing manager, ... read more

Hi Just thought I'd make a quick announcement to let you know about my latest incarnation as the GreenFestivalMan. This year I’m trying to live on a reduced carbon diet by following ten, self-designed green festival tips, and do my part to Stop Climate Chaos. The Greener Festival Guide We can stop climate chaos - Together we are irresistible, together we count. Sign the I Count Petition I've also taken a rather ambitious challenge to not eat meat throughout the period 20th-24th June, will you help me? "I will just eat vegetarian food at Glastonbury Festival (2007), but only if 200 meat eaters will just eat vegetarian food between 20th-24th June 07."/u... read more

Today was Orientation, and it was very exciting! I met at the AAEC office with John Mann who gave me the worlds most useful London map (The A-Z) and got me updated and ready for work. The gallery location is moving within London, so I will only be working on Fashion St for a short time, but I get to help with the move, which is very exciting. I will also only be working from 10-7, which is much better than expected. While at the AAEC I met this girl from my school, Keri who is working at NBC. We headed to the British Museum,m which was just round the corner. They have an amazing collection of Greek and Roman artifacts! There is even an entire section on Drama in ancient Greece! Of course, they don't ... read more
