Last night, as I retired to bed I could hear Digger (my dog). He was barking and it carried across the still night air through the open window. Digger is a dog of many barks, and I sense that this bark was trying to establish why he was 'camping' outdoors rather than indoors. It was sad listening to him reaching out across the night, and I have to admit at that point I wanted to stay....afterall he's my number 1 dog! Number 2 dog on the other hand is far more adaptable and I knew she was curled up in her new bed content, but wary of why the other was barking. They are just around the corner, a home from home, they will have a fab holiday but the old man takes time to adjust. ... read more

The Clock is Ticking 24 hours to go! It's been 5 years since I last left the UK and I can't remember the best strategy for packing. Shoes in the bottom?? Ah, but I've got this new case which has a compartment in the lid which might make for good shoe storage. Decisions! Decisions! Alex is all set, but there again he's been getting ready for the last week. Me? Oh no! That would mean I would actually have to think about going abroad and that would be far too scary..so right now the clothes are in the washing machine and I need to dry and pack them by tonight...hmmm could be a little tight! The dogs know that something is afoot. They don't like seeing bags being packed. Alex was given the soulful eyes ... read more

As you know we decided that postcards are soooo yesterday and instead we would keep you in the loop of our holiday by keeping a blog. Sounds easier than it actually is figuring out the most appropriate site - but hopefully this is it. Although as I got so frustrated with it yesterday and tried to delete the account, it may be that it isn't sorted after all!! Note to self: there's a reason why there is a welcome page it explains all the things that made no sense...so really I should read these before I start. Anyway, fingers crossed, if I am patient this should all work out fine. So to get your daily postcard from the Baltics, log in each day and read up on our experiences and a selection of pictures of local ... read more

What an experience we had, We had received a Big Box from a carrier, It felt as if nothing was in it but we weren't allowed to open it until Sunday, Pete's 65th birthday Well Sunday came we set about opening said Box very carefully as we had been instructed to do, And out popped a balloon much to our surprise on the bottom the string was two tickets for a balloon Flight how good was that, Anyway 16th June we were down at Pitchcroft Race course waiting in anticipation, 7.30pm we took off, I didn't know how pretty and green our countryside was, it really was a tremendous trip. Thank You Chris and Yvonne, What a Great gift!!!!!!!!... read more

So it’s all over. Well, the Canada portion is at least. We are back in the UK, spending time reflecting, oh and washing. So what did we do in our final days? Our exams were on the last day so the last few weeks were very stressful (Don’t laugh, it really was!) but we did manage to have some fun. You will be please to hear WE PASSED! We are now Level 2 Instructors. This probably means absolutely nothing to most of you but is actually a huge achievement for us! The first day of my exams was Hot Dog day which is a day of pure genius. For any of you who remember the ski slopes in the 80’s, the all-in-ones and fluorescent colours will bring back fond memories. For the rest of you, feel ... read more

When we boarded the bus at palace court we were expecting a three hour ride to 'wus-ter-sher' worcestershire for the weekend. At ont point we were driving through wales becuase our bus driver got lost. We arrived at almost midnight and we roamed around with flashlights lookin for cows until the rest of the FYSAE kids got her. The place was a typical camp kind of place. Although all the pictures showed little kids so I was hoping the rock climbing wall was at least taller than me ha ha THe first day fter a hearty breakfast they split us into groups. I was with all palace court people but it would ahve been sweet cause I was with Sara and she was going to be hardcore into it with me. THen Daniel was like "i ... read more

The big day finally arrived and Rex Kneebone of Murvi delivered our shiny new Morello motorhome. A two hour lesson on the many systems (interrupted by family and neighbours who were keen to see our new acquisition) was followed by the formal key handing over ceremony. Rex then dashed off to catch his train back to Devon and we were left hoping we could remember everything that he told us - time will tell. What we did know was at first glance it appeared to be everything we hoped it would be and our choice of vehicle and interior colours seemed to be a success.... read more

We have been tent campers all our lives, but during a trip to New Zealand in 2006 we hired a motorhome to tour the Southern Alps. We soon realised that for us this would be the ideal form of transport and accommodation for the extensive European travelling we intend to do during our retirement. When we got home to the U.K., we visited an exhibition to find out what was on offer and after a fair amount of soul searching we settled on a Murvi Morello based on the latest model Fiat Ducato. Why did we choose a Morello? It soon became apparent that from the myriad of choices we had, there were two main considerations. Firstly size and secondly practicability. The Morello is a panel van conversion and we preferred this to coach built type ... read more

A good day today. We've now covered just over 300 miles in 3 days. They've been long days - we've been on the road around 8AM every day but haven't arrived at any of our destinations before 7PM - and some have been harder than others (see Day 2). Today we crossed over the Severn Bridge (see photo), briefly dipped into Wales, and then on through the Wye Valley, passed Tintern Abbey and the Monmouth raft race, and into Herefordshire. We had a lovely lunch stop in Monmouth as Rob's wife, Vix, and their 3 lovely children came to meet us. We are now being very well looked after by Simon's Uncle Willy and Auntie Sarah (who are very kindly putting us up tonight) and are treating us to wine, dinner, a clothes washing service and ... read more

On Saturday I climbed through the mist and the slanting rain to the 1,344 metre summit of Ben Nevis, my 92nd and final mountain. The summit is the coldest place in Britain with a mean temperature of 0.3C and is scaled by 100,000 people a year. If the tourist track to the top is a motorway then the summit is a service station, the highest picnic area in Britain. After so many lonely summits it was odd to be surrounded by dozens of people. Ben Nevis may be the biggest but it's certainly not the baddest. Yet the people who walk up reminded me of watching the London Marathon - folk who are totally unprepared for the challenge. Bodies lay strewn either side of the path gasping for air asking if they were nearly there. Somehow ... read more
