North America » United States » Pennsylvania » Erie October 13th 2011

I thought it was the appropriate time to add an entry for Erie. I've been living up here for a month and a half now. I was accepted into the Applied Intelligence Masters Program at Mercyhurst College. My advice from everyone: "good luck in Erie, get some good snow tires!" We haven't gotten into the winter yet, but so far I'm loving it up here in Erie. The city is a little gem of Pennsylvania. It is home to four major universities and a number of smaller technical institutes. But what I love about this place so far is that there's always something going on. Maybe it's the city's way of saying 'hey, I know we have miserable drawn out snowy/icy winters, but look at all the other cool stuff we do!" With a winery in ... read more

"Craziest Fricken Day of Your Life!? That's for sure. Almost two years ago I was talked into running the Philadelphia Half Marathon. I remember thinking I was the craziest person alive for doing this- I am NOT a runner by any means. I've never ran more than maybe two miles without stopping. Well, I ran it! And since then I've been addicted to running and trying to beat my times. I've run three half marathons and countless shorter races. When I saw that the warrior dash was being held at the Skirmish Paintball fields- in my 'backyard' I just had to sign up for it. It's 3.5 miles long with obstacles strewn throughout the course. This seemed right up my ally! It was an amazing experience. It kicked my ass! I ended up finishing 64th in ... read more

Although I've ventured here many many times before, this trip still warrants a post. This trip marked the second time I've been the tour guide to those who have NEVER been to Washington, DC. The first was a few months back with Monika, not only was it her first trip to DC, but to the United States as well. This time, the guests weren't from so far away. My good friends from Alabama came all the way up to PA for my wedding, and on the road trip back down wanted to see our Nation's Capital. Now, coming from Alabama, or any area where most of what you see are small towns and country side (like where I grew up in PA) seeing a big city is quite exciting. Even though the farthest into the city ... read more

This was one of the first weekend getaways I've taken while studying abroad, both in London and Seoul, that I took to purely relax! Normally I try to fit as much sight seeing as possible into the time that I have. Ultimately, I end up needing a vacation from my vacation. I went with Jaime, the girl I met on the flight over to Korea. We sat next to eachother! We booked this entire trip through skype! I ended up buying both tickets through my school becuase they were the cheapest! I ended up running between ATMs and ppl's rooms thats owed me money from past trips! Eventually, after what felt like a marthon of running, I was able to purchase two tickets. We flew into Manilla, and had a few hours of layover. We ... read more

Tuesday we spent the day laying out on the beach. I knew that I would get a little burnt, but I had no idea it would be as bad as it was! I had SPF 45 on, but i'm not used to rubbing lotion on. Usually I buy the stuff in the aerosol can and spray it on, so I never miss a spot, well I missed some spots, and you can tell over my akwardly lobstered body! It was something else though, you could tell who the foreigners were on the beach becuase we were the only ones in bathing suits. All of the Koreans were there in long sleeves and long pants, and if they went in the water they went in fully clothed. I've never been to the beach where everyone was covering ... read more

Saturday afternoon Lea came to my room and proposed a hiking trip. Of course I agreed. Sunday morning at the butt-crack of dawn we headed east to the coast to Seoraksan National Park. When we got there, we spend the first half an hour trying to find a place to stay. We ended up in a motel, which was cheaper than the hostels and nicer than the hotels. 30,000W a night for the two of us. What a rip off haha We headed out to start climbing the mountains. When we got to the park office to get a map of the area, they said the trails were all closed because it was the dry season (until may 15) Because of the threat of forest fires no people were allowed to hike the trails. OF COURSE!! ... read more

After the temple tours, we were hot and exhausted. It was around noon and I really didn't want to be in the open sun with my already extreme sunburn. We went to eat at a cute little place. I ordered the alligator, which tasted like chicken. Mostly, it was just nice to get out of the sun and just sit down and relax. We got on the computers to check in on facebook - of course! After eating we will had 5 hours until we had to be to the airport. We were hot and tired and it had to be over 100 degrees. We decided to pay 15 bucks to go on a tour of a floating village, which so far on this trip was the most expensive tour. We took the half hour tuk ... read more

As Lara Croft said in the Tomb Raider movie; there is "no rest for the wicked." We had decided to meet downstairs at 5am for our tour at sunrise of Angkor Wat. When Leslie's alarm went off that morning, I thought there was no way I was getting out of bed. I couldnt' move I was so exhausted. My inability to think of anything other than going back to bed prevented my logical side from screaming "ANGKOR WAT AT SUNRISE!!", and I went back to sleep. She was like we can just go later, we have all day, and that sounded good enough to me. Both of us were laying in bed wishing we weren't so tired because we knew we would regret not getting there at sunrise, but we were just too tired. There was ... read more

The pounding on our door at 6:30 in the morning was brutal. I woke up soaking wet, because i sweated all night long. Even though without contacts in I couldn't see anything, I still didn't want to open my eyes. I was terrified my mosquito net was going to be covered in bugs! Luckily it was not. We went up for our free breakfast on the boat. Eggs, bread, and tea. I bought a JUMBO sized water and we all headed to the boats. They told us to put our luggage on a pile, they'd put it on the boat for us. Never thinking of it, I added mine to the pile. We got on our 'fast boat' ( I'm not sure what the slow boat was but i'm so glad we weren't taking it) Leslie ... read more

We were up bright and early again this morning. We were down in front of the travel agency by 7:15am. Again this morning there were a bunch of busses lined up outside. Problem was we didn't know which one was ours. We kept getting sent up and down the street. Now it was fifteen minutes past when we were supposed to leave and we still had no idea. Eventually we found our bus. Thank goodness. We would have had a cow if we missed the trip after everything. The bus was even smaller! I had absolutely no leg room. Our tour guide was pretty annoying this time. My trip would have been more enjoyable if it weren't for him. He took us to just certain places and gave us "his" tour of the place and then ... read more
