We took late summer holiday at Mary, Mark’s mother’s home between 6th and 10th September. We haven’t had very many hot days this summer. However, we had heard that heat wave would come at the beginning of the 2nd week of September. We travelled up to Bury St Edmunds on 6th September. Upon arrival at there, Mary came to the station and took us to Nowton Park where she regularly visits for a walk. We walked in the arboretum. There were a wide variety of trees, shrubs and conifers thriving and they looked great under the blue sky. We checked the weather forecast on Tuesday & Wednesday – heard that the temperature would rise up to 28 degree; we believed that London would have been even hotter. She took us to Long Melford Country Walk on ... read more

Bury St Edmunds Cathedral – w XII wieku wybudowano St James Church w Abbey Gardens. Następnie w XVI wieku ... read more

Today we travel two hours north from London to Bury St Edmunds, to stay with my cousin Sally. We'll also be visiting my 91 year old Auntie Beth, my mother's sole surviving sibling, who lives in a nursing home near Sally. We're being driven by another of my cousins, Barbie, who's Sally's sister. It's a sunny day, so Barbie says we should take the scenic route through some of East Anglia's small villages. Apart from being very attractive, they're also notable for their quaint names, Great Dunmow and Steeple Bumpstead amongst them. Many of the older houses have thatched rooves, which despite appearances to the contrary are apparently very waterproof and provide good thermal insulation. The downside is that they need to be replaced every now and then, which Barbie says is becoming increasingly difficult as ... read more

Visit to Ickworth House, Park and Garden Ickworth Estate is one of the nearest National Trust properties for John & Mary, and they visit there regularly. They took us to Ickworth on 19 June. As following the descendent path, I showed my parents the size of Ickworth Estate, pointing at the woodland shown beyond. They were amazed with the sizeable parkland. John explained to me that there used to be the village of Ickworth on the Ickworth Park, but the villagers were sent to Horringer. John & Mary told us that St Mary Church, was built for the Hervey family, has now been refurbished and opened to the public. As well as original documents and fragments of valuable porcelain, there were several artworks and ornaments restored such as murals or sculpture of golden dove. The descending ... read more

John & Mary kindly treated the lunch to use, as well as paying for the entrance fees to Anglo-Saxon Village. They suggested we would go to Fuller Mill Garden, which was accessible by the footpath from the country park. They also paid for the entrance fees to the garden. Fuller Mill Garden is set in a natural landscape including the River Lark and the Mill Pond. There were huge variety of perennials, shrubs, aquatic plant, tender plant, rock plant, conifers and trees thriving on the borders surrounded by the River Lark. My mother enjoyed looking at them and took loads of photos. Many colourful flowers did not only decorate the lush parkland but also offered therapeutic environment. It was one of the best gardens we had visited for a long time. I have heard that it ... read more

John & Mary took us to the West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village near Bury St Edmunds on 18 June. We had come to West Stow Country Park but have not yet visited the Anglo-Saxon Village. We were offered to see the film of the Anglo-Saxon Village at first and were shown collections of pottery, cutlery, armoury items, coins, surgical items and accessories excavated on and around the site of West Stow, and they were classified by the different period, e.g. Ice Age, Stone Age, Bronze Age and Roman Period. I was given the map of Anglo-Saxon Village that include the pig’s farmyard, Sunken house, Oldest house, Weaving house, (Community) Hall, Living House, Workshop and Farmer’s House. Those thatched houses were reconstructed on the basis of archaeological findings and have been built recently. Some of those houses, e.g. ... read more

It is cold! And has been for a while, however following a wee dusting of snow where we thought, oh this is nice.....a dumping of snow has arrived and stayed well and truely for a few weeks! This is all well and good if you live and work inside, but when the pipes freeze and the horses need water what do you do? Oh just bucket water up the hill and take a hammer to smash the inch thick ice twice daily! At the risk of sounding like a wingeing pom the silver lining is, it is all rather pretty, it beats knee deep mud and I have no obligation to do anything except stay inside ( bar feedtimes). Vaughn on the other hand was changing into his snowboarding gear the instant a snowflake appeared.....this was ... read more

As the weather gets progressivly colder, the central heating comes on and the leaves begin to change. I must admit being out in the wop wops has its advantages where you can clearly see the changes in the seasons. Surrounded by trees all the greenery is changing to red, yellow and orange which is all rather pretty. Frosty morning are not my favourite thing ( the car doesnt like it either) but it normally promises a sunny, but cold, day. I have been very lucky to always have fireworks on my birthday and as it is still guy fawkes here on my birthday weekend i didnt miss out this year. I had a lovely birthday, with gifts from New Zealand including some kiwi essentials like peanut slabs & milo. my lovely boss bought me a pair ... read more

Well it's been a week and we have moved to Bury St Edmunds, we have settled into our flat at Boxted Hall and I have sucessfully completed a weeks work at The Open College of Equine Studies. The week has certainly had it's ups and downs. Our landlords have kindly furnished the flat for us, which involved hauling a beds, couches, chairs and tables from the attic.....lets just say our flat is spread over 4 stories with three flights of stairs, not to mention the two attic spaces above us where the furniture came from.....Vaughn's a good pack horse! So we have a lovely, warm house, overlooking the moat and gardens. It is very surreal out here, but surprisingly busy with guests coming and going and today we have been dodging cameras and actors for a ... read more
