Lodos Goes Awol

It's now or never so instead of settling down and risking a shriveled uterus in my so called old age I'm off on my adventure to see the world! I have no plans, no expectations, I'm just trusting the fact that as yet no one has regretted their big OE and now it's my turn! I will be departing my home country New Zealand on 31st July heading for London and then who knows where...

It is cold! And has been for a while, however following a wee dusting of snow where we thought, oh this is nice.....a dumping of snow has arrived and stayed well and truely for a few weeks! This is all well and good if you live and work inside, but when the pipes freeze and the horses need water what do you do? Oh just bucket water up the hill and take a hammer to smash the inch thick ice twice daily! At the risk of sounding like a wingeing pom the silver lining is, it is all rather pretty, it beats knee deep mud and I have no obligation to do anything except stay inside ( bar feedtimes). Vaughn on the other hand was changing into his snowboarding gear the instant a snowflake appeared.....this was ... read more

After another stalled start to our weekend ( I swear we are cursed when it comes to cars!.... who gets two flat tyres when all they want to do is head away for the weekend!) We finally made it to London. We were visiting for our friends birthday, and after quite a stressful few weeks were looking forward to getting out of Boxted for the weekend. After finding our hotel, very conveniently located near Paddington tube station, we headed to Picadilly Circus to the Comedy Store where we had tickets for the evening. A good night out for £25 actually, and we will do it again! Love Picadilly Circus with all the lights and atmosphere...where people in London are actually HAPPY! I spotted the m&m's store too......is there a better reason to go back?! After another ... read more

I was truly looking forward to my first white christmas but it was not to be! LOVE Christmas over here, the do it RIGHT and all the Christmas cards make sense! Bury had its own wee Christmas market, which was all rather festive. Mulled wine, carols, wooden toy stalls, lights everywhere really started to make sure you knew it was Christmas. Friends of ours visited so we took advantage to show them around on "the tour of Bury" and soak up the Christmas atmoshere. Roger and Lena, friends of our in Sussex had offered their hospitality for the Christmas period. Lena looooves Christmas and even embroidered our initials into our very own stockings! We had an awesome week with never ending food and snacks, Santa came past one night in his sleigh and we were spoilt ... read more

As the weather gets progressivly colder, the central heating comes on and the leaves begin to change. I must admit being out in the wop wops has its advantages where you can clearly see the changes in the seasons. Surrounded by trees all the greenery is changing to red, yellow and orange which is all rather pretty. Frosty morning are not my favourite thing ( the car doesnt like it either) but it normally promises a sunny, but cold, day. I have been very lucky to always have fireworks on my birthday and as it is still guy fawkes here on my birthday weekend i didnt miss out this year. I had a lovely birthday, with gifts from New Zealand including some kiwi essentials like peanut slabs & milo. my lovely boss bought me a pair ... read more

I swear it is minus 10! and today we met Vaughns Aunty, who has moved over for work in a lovely wee village Saxmundham. Luckily our wee car made it, even keeping up with the big boys on the motorway in the pouring rain! I'm now starting to get a glimpse into the renowned english winter. After a wee cuppa & scone ( as you do) we made our way to Sutton Hoo where ancient anglo saxon warriors awaited....yet another part of history Vaughn would love to travel back in time to...much to his delight they had a museum full of Anglo Saxon memorobilia dug from the graves which are in the Saxon Hoo site. To be honest it was actually quite interesting. They used to bury their dead in ships along with their servants, horses, ... read more

Well it's been a week and we have moved to Bury St Edmunds, we have settled into our flat at Boxted Hall and I have sucessfully completed a weeks work at The Open College of Equine Studies. The week has certainly had it's ups and downs. Our landlords have kindly furnished the flat for us, which involved hauling a beds, couches, chairs and tables from the attic.....lets just say our flat is spread over 4 stories with three flights of stairs, not to mention the two attic spaces above us where the furniture came from.....Vaughn's a good pack horse! So we have a lovely, warm house, overlooking the moat and gardens. It is very surreal out here, but surprisingly busy with guests coming and going and today we have been dodging cameras and actors for a ... read more

Following on from Killin we carried on heading West this time, through the top of the National Park on the way to the West Coast to a seaside town called Oban. Once again the scenery was amazing and the roads followed different Lochs around, through amazing bush, complete with waterfalls again, very similar to the West Coast in NZ......but the West Coast doesn't have Castles through the mist as you look across the Loch! We were following the road and came across a Loch called Loch Awe - aptly named I think as, as I mentioned, it had an actual ruin of a castle, that had been struck my lightning a few hundred years ago, sitting what looked like on a island in the middle of the Loch. I had to use all of my strength ... read more

After four days in Edinburgh it was definiatly time to get out of the city, so we hired a car in search of Loch's, Scottish Seas and Vaughn's new found hero William Wallace (he's dead btw). Driving out of Edinburgh deserves a blog entry all in itself, but I will refrain... After an awesome cooked brekkie with the Cuzzies (thanks Zoe you are amazing!) we headed towards our first destination Stirling. We found Stirling Castle up on the hill and loe and behold a statue of William Wallace which started Vaughn off on his mission to learn everything and anything about the guy that fought for the independance of Scotland from British rule. If you would like to know more, watch Braveheart....but apparently this is not a good interpretation of what really happened so Vaughn tells ... read more

"In Scotland there is no such thing as bad weather.....only the wrong clothes!" Ha so true! Always, always take a jacket whilst travelling in Scotland. The weather may have been typical but the Edinburgh city was the most amazing place to see when you popped up on the street from Waverly Railway Station so this overshadowed the drizzle. The Scott Monument was the first thing we saw which was so impressive then to our left was the Edinburgh Castle and the edge of the old town, we were right smack bang in the middle of it all. To meet our friends who we would be staying with we walked through the Princes Street gardens with our luggage using our trusty GPS, up hills, down hills, up stairs, down stairs, through streets, across streets but don't worry ... read more

So I have a job! My dream job at that and it is in the most beautiful area. With work due to start in about two weeks I was on the hunt for a flat, and although my trip to Bury St Edumunds wasn't successful on the flat front it was great to see around the region that would soon be my home. Bury St Edmunds is about 1 1/2 hours from Biggleswade but it seems a longer drive than that. I had heard it was a 'destination point' and now I know why. The history here dates back to the 12th century! The town is much larger than I thought....for some reason I always imagine small wee villages with cobbled streets. Well, Bury has the cobbles streets, but it is quite developed and has grown ... read more
