What a damp experience this turned out to be and the net result was being drenched to the bone. This stretch was to take me from Exton to South Harting being a distance of 15 miles. It rained most of the way. The guide book described all the wonderful views that were to be seen from many parts of this stretch of the walk. They were not available today to this walker due to the descending mist and the driving rain. In the process I became drenched to the skin. Everything in my rucksack was sodden including my wallet and guide books. At one stage I needed to refer to my guide book and retrieved it together with my glasses. The glasses steamed up, the pages of the book stuck together and I wasn't certain which ... read more

The South Downs Way 28th-31st May, 2010 The South Downs Way is a long distance trail (160km) in southern England running between Winchester and Eastbourne. It is accessible to walkers, horse riders and cyclists. Much of the trail crosses the chalk hills that the Downs is well known for. London to Winchester Friday evening, bank holiday weekend and Rupesh and I took the train from Waterloo to Winchester which wasn't much more than an hour. After finding Panoramic Views B & B we walked in to town and had a really lovely dinner a The Old Vine. Winchester is a beautiful old town and well worth exploring a little more. Winchester to Buriton Stats: 46km, Av. speed 8.8km/h, 5.25 hours of cycling In true English style the rain started just after breakfast as we were getting ... read more

Today I am off on the 100 mile walk from Winchester to Eastbourne. A walk over the South Downs from West to East and a distance of 100 miles. The plan is to walk it in 9 days at a reasonably leisurely pace although I may be tempted to hot up the pace and complete it in a quicker time. The stretch today was from the capital of Wessex, Winchester ( a city drenched in history and well worth a visit, especially the Cathedral) to a small village called Exton. The walking distance is 12 miles and I started at 9.15 and by 1.15 I was in Exton after a relatively easy hike, mainly along farm tracks and a few country lanes. The views along some of the stretches today are a taster for things to ... read more

Today we arrived at Heathrow and as usual had to walk half way across Heathrow from the plane to customs and immigration. It seems every time we come here, our aircraft is parked at the furthest extremity. We cleared customs with no problems and then had a cup of coffee and went to get the shuttle to collect the car. We were taken to the Avis depot and within 30 minutes were on our way in a blue Peugeot 207. Nice little car. We then headed off around Heathrow Airport to pick up the motorway and head south to Basingstoke in Hampshire. We had the guy at Avis print us off an AA route listing of where we wanted to go in Basingstoke but he printed us off a route to someplace else, Kettering, we think. ... read more

Hi! Well after weeks of thinking, so much that my head hurts, I've booked my first accommodation, the hostel in Bangkok! I booked my flights a few weeks ago, a Qantas flight going LHR-BKK then Singapore to Perth, and back again. Because you can only book a year in advance the Flight Centre advisor booked my return for March 2011, but when I get to Perth I'll be changing this!! Anyway, I've just booked to stay in Bangkok for 5 nights at the Baan Dinso, the top rated hostel in BKK! I pondered the Khao San Road, then read The Beach and went well off it, I know it's only a book, but I just don't get the appeal of the road, it just sounds so busy and noisy, and having picked some real dives on ... read more

Well, with all the trouble in Thailand we may need to re-think our route around the world! We are taking a year out from our careers to travel around the world for a year. Our plan is to spend 3 months in Thailand before heading to Bali for Christmas. Sydney will play host to New year before heading out to travel around New Zealand for 3 or 4 months. A chill out in the cook Islands before visiting the bright lights of Vegas before coming home to normality!! I think we have bought everything we may need to go -now all we need are the tickets!!... read more

After 4 nights in London, we decided it was time to get out of the city and see some of the countryside. The man at the pub who told me the shroud of Jesus was a fake, suggested that we go to Winchester. We had originally been talking about Stonehenge but he said it was a waste of time-- "just a bunch of rocks sitting around in a field". He told us that Winchester was a small town with a lot of history and he was right!! We arrived yesterday morning and had already reserved a room above a local pub. We went to drop off our backpacks and met the owner of the pub, gary. The pub/inn is called the King Alfred Pub after the cities most prominent leader, King Alfred. Even Gary's dog was ... read more

I feel like the classic American tourist with starry eyes and camera around my neck. Even though it has rained on and off ever since I got here, and I had a bit of jet lag, I have been a diligent tourist. I went to Parliament, big ben, the London eye, St. Paul's Cathedral, a few museums, a cheeky English pub, a wine bar, great coffe shops and I road a double decker bus, the tube, and a boat down the Thames AND I went to Stonehenge! I Feel like there is so much to write about that it is almost overwhelming so I will just focus on a few things. First of all, I am staying with a friend of mine from Idaho Falls, Anna, and her boyfriend James and they have been very gracious ... read more
