After staying at Auntie Susan's, Nan and Pop picked us up and we made our way to their house in Kingsworthy near Winchester. It was surreal driving through the city where I grew up, but excited to show Andy the area. Nan and Pop's felt like a home away from home which was great! The first night Nan took us out to the BEST (also Dad's favourite) curry restaurant in Winchester called the Ghandi. The owner of the Ghandi recognized me(it had been years since I ate there) and we got some free entrées... Dad must have been a good customer! Kingsworthy is a nice little village in the country so Andy and I decided to take a walk around the area. Our plan was to start in Kingsworthy and end up at a pub called ... read more

Winchester possesses a wealth of medieval history, and I got interest in visiting there. Sachi and I travelled to Winchester by train on 24 June. I had printed the map from the Internet, and we thought we could start looking round the Great Hall and Westgate. As we walked down the on Upper High Street, we found the building for Hampshire Council on the left hand and several stone buildings including the Westgate on the right hand. We crossed over the busy road and reached the pedestrian path, and found the Great Hall, where King Arthur's Round Table has been hanging. It was amazing to see a sizeable medieval great hall, part of the construction which dates from the 1235, in the reign of Henry III, as well as seeing the fragments of Winchester Castle, which ... read more

Just before I flew to Canada to see Allison I went down to Southampton to see my Mum. Among other things we had a lovely kayaking trip up the River Hamble in the evening and had a leisurely paddle. Gorgeous especially as it was followed by fish & chips and toasted marshmallows on the chiminea - sod the diet! ... read more

Geo: 51.063, -1.31649 We enjoyed a lovely morning at Sonehenge. Stonehenge is an amazing prehistoric monument. We were in awe seeing the large standing stones. From there we travelled along lovely country roads to Avebury which is also a site of large standing stones, but these surround the village of Avebury. This site is older than Stonehenge. Both were very impressive to see. Tonight is our last night of our fabulous 3 month trip around the world. We really do not want it to end.... read more

Today is our flight from London Heathrow to Hong Kong. Our departure is at 10.30 pm so we have all day with Wally and Maureen. We planned with them to see Peter’s cousins Robert and Julie at their house. Robert was unable to make it but Julie came along with her husband Matt, and sons Jack and George. Their daughter Holly was unable to make it as she is studying for her GCSEs this summer. It’s been twelve years since we have seen them and it was really good to catch up. They stayed for about three hours and had to go home as Jack had to start work at about 5 pm. After they left we went into Basingstoke and had some lunch and then went to Tesco to do bit of final shopping in ... read more

Portsmouth and English Channel: It was a bright sunny evening when I arrived at Portsmouth to board the ferry. It was not due to dock in Le Harve until the following morning. I was to travel across the channel to land in Normandy on the 4th of June, following the journey taken almost sixty-six years earlier by the allied forces of Operation Overlord. Only my journey was on a modern ferry with a bar. As I looked out towards the channel from the deck, my contemplation of what to do on landing was more of, 'I have no accommodation or transport, a loose plan of touring Normandy for a few days and terrible French.' Rather than 'Will I survive to see my family again?' or 'What will be the fate of the man next to me?' ... read more

Today is our last full day in the UK before we fly off to our holiday in sun in Malta. We did get away a bit later than we anticipated as we weren’t sure what the traffic was going to be like. Being the last day of a long weekend we expected the traffic to be a lot heavier than what we encountered. We said our farewells to Robin and Jean and Kelly also came to see us off. The trip down the M1 to London was uneventful and we arrived at Wally and Maureen’s in the late afternoon. Three of us went to the local supermarket while Wally went to the pub, where I joined him a little later. We had a lovely dinner and Gina then got everything packed ready for the flight the ... read more

27 05 2010 Final blog entry today as we are now home. For those who have been following our big trip to the other side of the world thank you for your interest. It has been an adventure of a lifetime and great fun. The purpose of the blog was to let family and friends know where we were but as importantly for us it will be a reminder of the wonderful memories we have had which we can access in our later years. I would certainly advise people to do this, it takes a bit of effort but if you don’t make a record of your days they get forgotten. Hopefully you enjoyed reading them as much as we enjoyed experiencing them. The final day was the awful early start, certainly still suffering from the ... read more
