In the whole time we have been travelling i dont think we have had such a disasterous trip.... Disasterous but fun! So we had booked to do a 3-night camping trip on a remote island in the San Blas islands of the Kuna Yala territory, Panama. It is an archepeligo of around 365 palm fringed islands, give or take a few that disappear at high tide. Its the kind of islands that you picture when someone says "Deserted tropical island paradise"...... Well!?!? We had met our fellow travellers at the hostel in Panama city. Two couples, Bruce and Laura from Canada and Julien and Tasha from Reunion Island and South Africa. We all got along really well. The trip started early in the morning and we headed to the Kuna Yala (Native indian territory not governed ... read more

We have just got back to mainland Ecuador after spending just over a week in the Galapagos. Its a pretty amazing place with wildlife everywhere, as you would expect. We first flew into San Cristobal island, where we spent the majority of our week. We organised a taxi to take us to some of the sites around the island. First stop was El Junco, a lake at the top of a volcano. It was a bit of a mission to get up there in the humid heat but a great view nonetheless. Then we went to visit the Giant tortoises. These animals grow so slowly but some of them are massive, 80-200 years old!! The final stop was a well earned swim at a nice white sand beach, Puerto Chino. All in all, it was a ... read more

Alright, the first blog of our Central American Adventure. We started the trip by leaving from England and heading across to Madrid before boarding a flight across the altantic, bound for Bogota. We then had to change planes to get to Quito, Ecuador. We had an overnight stopover in Quito, then jumped on our last planes to the ecuadorian coast. Our friend Eddie who we met in Cornwall, had organised a guy to pick us up at the airport and take us to his town, Canoa. The car journey was a couple of hours and the driver didnt speak any English but was keen to tell us about things. So we did as best we could with our spanish phrasebook and Dinis iPhone app "Spanish for Dummies". I reckon we did pretty well for first timers. ... read more

Aviemore - Scotland 07/02/2011 - 13/02/2011 We left london early on the 6th of Feb to head up to Scotland on the train. It was Lynda's birthday so we had some breakfast champagne at 9am and hit the beers shortly after. Duncan ( Andy's work mate) and his partner Miriam joined us on the trip. After 8 hours on the train we arrived in Aviemore and we were all as sober as an alocholic on pension day. We carried on the birthday celebrations at the Hilton Coylumbridge where the six of us were staying. The next day we crawled out of bed and our mate that had organised my snowboard was just around the corner. When he got there we set up the boards and got ready for a day on the mountain. We caught a ... read more

Iceland 2/02/2011 to 6/02/2011. The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik sits at about 64 degrees north of the equator, not far from the arctic circle. For a place so far north, the climate is fairly mild due to a warm ocean current that passes by the island. As a result, there is usually not that much snow over winter, in the capital city anyway. But wouldnt you know it, it was snowing when we arrived in Iceland and did so for the whole first night. We walked into town from our hotel and had a burger and a couple of beers. The local brew is called Viking which isnt too bad. The next day, the ground was white with snow and the sun was out so we headed up to the Blue Lagoon for a swim in ... read more

The west coast of France has a very laid back surfing culture. We visited the famous surfing towns of Biarritz, Hossegor and Lacanau. Biarritz and Hosseger were really cool places and only about half an hour drive between them. There are countless beach breaks around this coast and all of top quality when the correct swell, wind and tide combine. All of the beaches in the region vary and different stages of the tide, so at high tide it was good in Hossegor then at low tide you'd drive to Biarritz and it was good there. I had one really good surf at both of these places so i was happy with that and looking foward to going back down there next year. No photos of the surf though cos it was raining most of the ... read more

After a month in Portugal we entered Spain in the Galicia region. At this point in time the weather was pretty bad and we had a couple of rough nights sleeping in the van, copping the full brunt of the wind and rain straight from the ocean. We kept free camping all along the coast but didnt find many waves due to the weather. Also, after september most shops and tourism places are closed, so there wasnt much else to do except head towards France. The scenery in that part of spain was pretty epic though. It was very green and mountainous, totally different from the dry and arid mediterranean coast. One day we arrived at a well known surf spot called Rodiles. We got there late afternoon after driving for a while looking for a ... read more

This blog is a very brief rundown our time spent driving up the coast of Portugal. We entered Portugal in the Algarve (south) but skipped the touristy section and headed straight for the south-west tip. The day we got there the surf was really good at a break called Zavial. I had a good surf but the crowds put a dampener on it. Good welcoming to Portugal nonetheless. The following two weeks we travelled up the coast stopping at dozens of beaches, all the way up to Lisbon. We free camped in the beach car parks every night. Talk about a room with a view! We’d just back the van up facing the sunset, cook dinner and a few drinks each night. Very cruisy, relaxing and just what camping in the van is all about. When ... read more

After France we drove down to Spain and stayed at Tossa de Mar on the Costa Brava. It was a great campsite which sat on top of the cliffs and the beaches were below. The first night we got there we indulged in Spanish cuisine... seafood paella and sangria. It just so happened that they had a flamenco performance on that night which was a great welcoming to Spain, we couldn’t have asked for anything more... until the rain came along and ruined it! After Tossa de Mar we picked up our mates Bondi and Lynda from Barcelona and headed down the coast to a small town called L’ametlla. We stayed in a camping ground just outside of town but on the coast. It was a scorcher the day we arrived and after the van trip ... read more

Our first blog of the van trip! We’ve been a bit slack with the blogs as we are having too much fun! Our journey started leaving Winchester on the 6th of August and we headed up to London to meet our friends Bondi and Lynda. We stayed in a hotel in Shepherds Bush (North London). The first night we went to the Brick Lane, which is famous for its Indian curry. Many restaurants line the street and people out the front try to lure you in with various deals. You can barter with the price and get them to throw in free rounds of drinks. We had a mix of curries to share between us. It was good to catch up with some of our friends that we hadnt seen since Perth. The next day we ... read more
