February '09 It's just over a year since I completed the first stage of my South American travels. So, before I start round two, some reflections on the first trip may influence the way I tackle this forthcoming venture. The script on the blog from my first trip encapsulated my first impressions rapidly typed up in a variety of internet cafes and enhanced with a selection of photographs which were often difficult to upload. The idiosyncrasies of the internet systems throughout the countries visited and their volatile reliability often resulted in frustration. However there were very few total failures and technology triumphed in the end. I would be happy to revisit any of the countries travelled. I found a welcoming friendly atmosphere wherever I went and the hospitality I received was in many cases overwhelming. Apart ... read more

Last weekend we ventured out on the last training walk in the New Forest. This one was 8 hours long. We got to St James Hill near Emery down and made off towards a point on the map using my new found compass skills. Well that was the plan, but all that Christmas drinking had damaged my memory cells and I started to realise I had forgotten how to. I was angry with myself and it took me about 20 minutes to re-figure it out. I remember when I first learnt the method it seemed so easy, but it’s one of those things, the more you think about it, the more your brain complicates it. It was already 10:30 and we still had at least 8 hours ahead, it would definitely be dark by the time ... read more

So here I am setting up my travel blog and finally being able to contemplate the journey ahead. The weekend has been full of ''hello and goodbye again's'' and now I am in the lovely Lavelle family home nice and full from not one but TWO vegetarian curries with my voice finally having a chance to recover from a hectic but fabulous few days (it's so wrong that you really can talk too much!) Tomorrow I'm heading to Heathrow to climb aboard a carrier of dreams (and of course a horrid contributor to the global warming disaster) to Accra, Ghana, where I will hang around for a few days tyring to get a visa for Togo. Thereafter I will make the journey over the border to work with an NGO in Kpalime in the hope of ... read more

Getting ready for a winter trip to Europe We are planning to go to Spain and Portugal this winter leaving on Tuesday 27 January. Lesley also fancies catching a ferry over to Africa and touring Morocco. An interesting adventure for us to new places. Otherwise we shall visit some of the same sites we stopped at in 2008. We shall update this blog as a card to our friends on an occasional basis. If you don't want to get notification of this blog then let me know and we shall stop the emails. Meanwhile we prepare slowly to get ready to go. Regards. Michael and Lesley... read more

So the day is finally here. Jezza has overcome "major, extensive eye surgery" (only joking bubba) and i've said goodbye to all my good friends and the wonderful cats and dogs at Battersea. We're a bit concerned about Fiji due to the serious flooding there and we are still undecided as to whether to go or not, but will keep you updated. Looking forward to seeing Nick at the airport in San Fran tomorrow, also very much looking forward to going to Napa Valley this weekend!!!!! Don't fret all you Jez lovers out there he will be on here when we get to San Fran (I hope so anyway as he's a better speller than me). speak soon Mel (and Jez who is no doubt still not packed and drinking whisky with glenn-stupid, stupid, stupid!) xxxxxxxxxx ... read more

Geo: 50.8998, -1.39561Sunday 11/01/09 The day's finally arrived; we left home by coach at 10:15 for the uneventful 3 ½ coach trip to Southampton docks. Onceat the berth there was as expected the snaking queue of hundreds of people all with the same thought on their minds; lets get this over with quickly, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised, the process from joining the queue to opening the cabin door was just under 30 minutes, not bad at all. The cabin's fine with plenty of storage space (which we'll need for the next 3 months) it's positionedamidships and on level 9 as originally booked which places us pretty much dead centre of the ship which I anticipate will lessen the impact of pitching and rolling in heavy seas. (I checked the weather forecastfor the ... read more

The clue is in the title... My mate Max bought a pub earlier in the year... So I paid him a visit. It's a lovely little pub near next to the Royal Hampshire Hospital. They had 5 beers on and they were all yummy. I had to keep trying them, pint after pint... Then i was hungry so on the advice of Ziggy I bought me a burger. It was the most awesome burger in the whole world, ever... Max is a good chef. I will be returning with Ellie to feed here awesome burgers and cider. So if yer in the region of Winchester or unfortunate enough to end up in the Royal Hampshire Hospital, visit the St James Tavern! Rob xxx ... read more

I saw one of the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen in Hampshire England. My Jane Austen class went on our study trip to Winchester and Chawton. It was amazing and one of the best days of my entire time here. We started out at the house on College Street in Winchester where Jane Austen spent her last days and died in Cassandra’s arms. Though we did not get to go inside the house because it is a private home it was interesting to see this house that she spent her last months in. Cassandra had brought Jane to Winchester in 1817 to seek medical care but the doctors could barely help with the pain much less with the real problem (which is now believed to be Addison’s disease). The house is a simple building ... read more
