….except that my next port is 7 days away I’m bereft of 80% of my luggage…………………… While at the gate in Baltimore for my 5 hours, I thought I’d check on my luggage. Well, Sir, she said…..we do have one of your bags and I’m sure the other will be on your flight to London. WRONG !!!! Round and round went the baggage carousel….the little red bag with my suit appeared…but where was the big bag? The one with my tuxedo, my leather sport coat, my dress and casual shirts, my shoes….all my stuff. The baggage office of British Airways was most apologetic…..it seems it did not make the flight…..but just fill out this form and we will deliver it to you as soon as it arrives. Now that is a great policy, except that my ... read more

I think I have started using the term "home" in an increasingly flexible sense lately. Is England really home for me? Or is Crete...or is Fiji, as by December I had been living there almost a year. Well, I think I can have many homes, as many as I like in fact, as long as there is a reason to call somewhere home, and it feels like home, then home it is. In this instance I was coming home to England to see my parents, my brother and a whole load of friends. I wasn't coming back to England for the weather, that's for sure. In fact, even before my arrival at Heathrow I was bracing myself for what I knew was going to be a bit of a rough start. My body was going to ... read more

Well here we are - at last! Found a Travel Blog site that I may well be using on my travels - just trying it out to see how it works etc before I go. So lets start. It's Sunday 9 Dec 2007. I have received my "final" itinerary ( how final is final, though?) and paid for the greater part of the trip. Now got to sort out the details. Bought some gear and my rucksack, sleeping bag and walking boots - essential. Now have to practice packing the rucksack to see if it will all go in!! Only 5 weeks to go. Leaving Heathrow for Bangkok on Sunday 13 Jan 2008 at 10:00PM. It's creeping up! I'll keep you posted! I have uploaded a couple of pics of Southampton Common - just to get ... read more

Ferry Cancelled We've said goodbye to everyone but have received a message from P&O Ferries letting us know that they are not risking their ferry across the Bay of Biscay to Bilbao on Sunday. The next available is leaving on Saturday 15 December. So we have now booked for Wednesday from Plymouth to Santander which takes only 24 hours instead of 32 from Portsmouth. And soon we shall be letting you know how we are getting along. All the best from Southampton. Michael and Lesley... read more

After a great breakfast at our Holiday Inn Express we headed for a leisurely trip to New Milton as we weren't expected there until 11am. We decided to take the route through the 347 sq kilometre New Forest which is the largest area of unenclosed land in Britain, and glad we did as this was lovely. We found the beautiful little village of Beaulieu. There we saw the beautiful Palace House and explored the lovely little shops in the main street. At once stage a huge lorry decided to go through this part of town but cars were parked on either side so he got a bit nervous, we figured he wasn't used to this. Larni ended up guiding him through, what a laugh! We forced ourselves to leave in order to reach New Milton at ... read more

Chatting with the superintendent at the Brighton Coach Station, I was assured of a place on the morning coach along to Southampton - however my friend noticed that my hard won buss pass was invalid, due to the London issuer having written an expiry date which preceeded the start date. He recommended I ask the kind folk at the Southampton National Express Office to sort it out. And just when I thought I was well on my holiday! The bus came in, and we had a very pretty, sunny drive along the coast, via the small sea-side town of Worthing, past lofty Arundel Castle, and through the tiny University town of Chichester, where the beautiful old stone buildings clash with the bricks of the modern and industrial areas in an unfortunate way. Continuing to Plymouth, and ... read more

Hopped on a train down at Earley station again today, this time to go to Southampton, a port city on the south coast of England. It's quite a big city, with a fascinating mix of old and new - lots of shopping malls, markets, corporate buildings, etcetera interspersed with the ruins of a wall that surrounded the city in medieval times. ... read more

After a three hour train ride from Exeter with a killer hangover, trying very hard not to fall asleep so I wouldn't miss my changeover, I arrived in Southampton to find it was really hot there too. It's the first time I wished it was cold in England. Paul picked me up and took me strait to Beaulieu for National Mini Cooper Day. 2000 mini's in Beaulieu Palace gardens. I have never seen so many little cars, and so many little car owners excited to tell you every little detail about their little cars :) It was lots of fun, although my loyalty still lies with beetles :) They break down less :) We saw mini ambulances, mini police cars, mini ice-cream cars and a mini caravan :) ... read more
