I have just finished my Day Skipper course 4 days of theroy and 5 day on practical. It was very intense. 4 other people were great, I was the only woman except for the instructor and it worked out well. We sailed over to Cowes, up the Bealueiu river, down to lymington. up the Hamble. cover over 80 miles in 4 days. We were not hampered by the weather which was up to force 7 (28-33knots) at times. It was cold as the pictures of us show the woolly hats which were necessary! We did some night sailing in very busy waters and saw everything we had learned about on the theroy part of the course. The people(4)on the course were like me keen and enthusicatic and we had a good laugh easp as we a ... read more

And Through Portugal We had a lovely time driving slowly up through Portugal with some lovely and some not so lovely weather. We managed to pop into Lisbon when it was wet and it doesn't matter then. It is still a great place for a short break. We discovered history in Mafre, Tomar and Obidos. And some religiosity in Fatima where we got wet. After that we moved further north to a small campsite near Oliveira dos Hopital past Coimbra where we cycled and stayed for a few days before finding Braganca which was beguiling, a real find. This was our last stop in Portugal and we took to the hills to find Spain. Asturias and Cantabria, north Spain But we were a bit heavy perhaps as we overheated our breaks coming down into Spain. We ... read more

Geo: 50.8998, -1.39561Saturday 11/04/09 At Sea Wind force 6 swells 2-3 m Some of the outside decks are off limits due to the weather so we completed the packing, but as for some bizarre reason tonight is a formal night we can't pack the last of our formal dress items so they'll have to be done tomorrow. After the evening show I decided to nip up to the Cyb@study and log on, update the blog and use up any outstanding minutes. Porno Pete was there as usual, I can't remember if I suggested it previously or not but we've come to the conclusion he must be owner of one of the websites as he's never off the PC, at Ponta Delgada after only 5 minutes off of the ship we saw him login on at a ... read more

Getting ready for a winter trip to Europe We are planning to go to Spain and Portugal this winter leaving on Tuesday 27 January. Lesley also fancies catching a ferry over to Africa and touring Morocco. An interesting adventure for us to new places. Otherwise we shall visit some of the same sites we stopped at in 2008. We shall update this blog as a card to our friends on an occasional basis. If you don't want to get notification of this blog then let me know and we shall stop the emails. Meanwhile we prepare slowly to get ready to go. Regards. Michael and Lesley... read more

So the day is finally here. Jezza has overcome "major, extensive eye surgery" (only joking bubba) and i've said goodbye to all my good friends and the wonderful cats and dogs at Battersea. We're a bit concerned about Fiji due to the serious flooding there and we are still undecided as to whether to go or not, but will keep you updated. Looking forward to seeing Nick at the airport in San Fran tomorrow, also very much looking forward to going to Napa Valley this weekend!!!!! Don't fret all you Jez lovers out there he will be on here when we get to San Fran (I hope so anyway as he's a better speller than me). speak soon Mel (and Jez who is no doubt still not packed and drinking whisky with glenn-stupid, stupid, stupid!) xxxxxxxxxx ... read more

Geo: 50.8998, -1.39561Sunday 11/01/09 The day's finally arrived; we left home by coach at 10:15 for the uneventful 3 ½ coach trip to Southampton docks. Onceat the berth there was as expected the snaking queue of hundreds of people all with the same thought on their minds; lets get this over with quickly, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised, the process from joining the queue to opening the cabin door was just under 30 minutes, not bad at all. The cabin's fine with plenty of storage space (which we'll need for the next 3 months) it's positionedamidships and on level 9 as originally booked which places us pretty much dead centre of the ship which I anticipate will lessen the impact of pitching and rolling in heavy seas. (I checked the weather forecastfor the ... read more

England and Scotland is about family roots again so this will be another sentimental journey. Nothing like starting out with family and finishing with family. ... read more
