No, not a reference to 80s hair metal (although I am now inspired to add it as the soundtrack to this entry - The Final Countdown ), but an acknowledgement that I am now less than 9 days away from departure. I still have a list as long as my arm of things to do/prepare/organise and people to see before I go, yet here I sit having a lazy Sunday and putting all of that off. I am excited to be going, but I'm also a little nervous at setting off on my own for the first time, albeit into a fairly structured environment for the first 3 months. After some weeks of nervous checking, the snow is now building very nicely (check out the Snow Report ) and although I've not managed the fitness regime ... read more

AccessCollege is a small private school in Wimbledon offering English Language Courses, Foundation Degree courses and Graduate programmes. I enjoyed myself very much teaching Ielts, Conversation and one-on-one classes there. My Ielts group was very keen on progressing rapidly and they all gave their best in class. I ran a multilingual group comprising students from Thailand, Mexico,Turkey,France, Nigeria, Brazil,Poland, Italy, etc a great bunch of young people with a very specific goal: to pass the Ielts examination successfully. Most of them are aiming to go into higher education in the Uk and in order to achieve their goal, they need to prove a high level of oral and written proficiency in English. This is part of the eligibility criteria they have to comply with in order to enrol on an undergraduate or postgraduate course. ... read more

We have done the time to commit the perfect crime...... entering into a world of adventure and becoming masters of our own destiny......no work and all play!!! WOW….what a year!!! Like all great things this didn’t come with luck. It has taken a great deal of planning and sacrifice and is a tribute to all who have helped us along the way. The countdown started at 302 days and after many nights staying home to save and being deprived of what the London party scene has to offer we have finally reached the end goal!!! As our adventures take us further from our friends and nearer to our dreams we intend to keep in touch no matter where in the world we are. This log is a way of doing just that, until our paths cross ... read more

Okey dokey. I reckon’s we’ve left the blog update long enough. We’ve copped enough abuse from people about lack of blog action that I thought I’d better write another one. Lots has happened over the last month or so, but we still haven’t really left London, so our adventures have been limited to this crazy city. I’ll try and cast my mind back over the last months and tell you some highlights. I’ll leave the best highlight for last - otherwise the rest of the blog will not be worth reading. I’ve just had a haircut, which much to Jenni’s amusement, has caused me to look like a scuffy wally. There’s a chain of ‘hairdressers’ here called Mr Toppers, that offer supposed haircuts for £6. I got it Thursday night on our way to see Ash ... read more

I have written often about my tendency to over plan my life. It really kicks in when Mom and Lynn come to visit as I want them to have a good time and to see as much as possible in the time when they are here. This time, however, we decided not to put anything in the diary, but to see where life took us. Deep breath -- I know I can do this. On Sunday, we met for a late breakfast and decided that the day was just too lovely to be inside. We went for a long walk around Hyde Park. Funnily enough, this is often what I do on a Sunday. I find a part of London and I go exploring. The best part of this wonderful city is all the hidden gems. ... read more

There are few things more exciting than waiting at the airport to pick someone up. I love being part of the crowd and watching the reunions as people get off planes. As I am always standing at the international arrivals, one sees some very moving things. On Friday morning, I was waiting for Mom and Lynn to arrive and got to see quite a few of these scenes. Turns out that immigration at Gatwick was backed up and the queue snaked forever. It took them an hour and half to get through and I was beginning to think I had somehow missed them. Just as I was about to page, they walked through the set of double doors, not exactly smiling. After huge hugs, we solved the stress problem with a good cup of coffee to ... read more

Flew to London Heathrow Met-up with my Aunt and Cousin Went on a mini tour on my own Went to Mosque - Center Toured London by Night by car I did pretty good on the flight I slept 6 hours out of the 9 so it helped when we arrived in London at 9:35 am and I was somewhat rested. It is funny how things in London are just as you remember them, it felt like I was just there a year ago but the last time I was there it was 2002. Upon arriving, I had to negotiate the tube with my luggage. I must say I made a good choice in picking a traveling backpack with wheels. My Aunt, Ferida met me at the Wimbeldon tube station. It was good to see her and ... read more

Well this is probably starting a little late seeing as how we have been here for 5 weeks now, time flies...when you're looking for a job in london. The story so far- A bright and early start from Sydney on 01 April 2008,the nerves finally set in :)Tash and Andrew (Phil's Big Sis And Brother in-law) dropped us off at the airport for our last goodbyes...boo hoo! It twas especially hard seeing as how we got so spoilt our last few days in Australia thanks to Tash and Andrew...of which included eating a meatpie whilst looking at the Sydney Opera House/Harbour Bridge and a very picturesque stay in the blue mountains! And we're off! A special request to the pilot to fly over Darwin on the way out to say good-bye was momentous.....well not really, but we did ... read more

It's a bit strange living in London because you are so close to such massive sporting occasions and venues all the time. Growing up in SA as a kid you see Lords, Stamford Bridge, Wimbledon etc on TV but now living here you walk past these places often without a second thought. I love that you can watch live world class sport almost every weekend of the year. Well Wimbledon was in town a few months ago and there was simply NO way I was going to miss it. The first day I went down it was inevitably raining as well as sold out. great. Next time I went during the week early with uncle Ryan and Mikey. This time we cruised right in with our beers and vodka and made our way to Court 2 ... read more
