Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

I missed the shot I wanted. Australians are really odd people, mate. You see, I unknowingly attempted to order some food at an Aussie bar (They have quite a few throughout Europe, by the way), and when no one came to help me for several minutes, I got up and went to the bathroom. Now, as stimulating as that seems, it’s not half as stimulating as INFLATABLE SHEEP DOLLS, which were all SOLD OUT in the men’s room. I can’t imagine what’s funnier - the fact that they sell inflatable sheep at Aussie bars - or the fact that they’re all [View Full Entry]

Well we have been on the road for over a year! A year since we made the change from retirees/consultants/farmers to travellers. Comes as a bit of a shock. After all we are still getting organised and there is still much more to see and do than we had intended to have left after a year. But it is timely that we review our progress. We have visited 21 countries in the last year, some more than once and that doesn't include 2 trips back to Australia. We have flown in excess of 56,000 kilometres, driven ourselves over 40,000 kilometres, been [View Full Entry]

Clear blue skies to start the day with so we headed off to the London Eye. From there we walked over the Thames to Trafalgar Square and a short visit to the National Gallery. From there it was off to Covent Garden for lunch and a bit of shopping. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the sight and sounds of the carnival. In the evening we enjoyed dinner in La Bella Italia restaurant - the students' first experience of the Godfather dessert. [View Full Entry]

Anne writes: Used the London Bus System this morning, I prefer it. I feel like I am in control , I can sit with the map on my knee and follow where the driver of the big bendy bus is taking us, Secondly it is not hot and smelly like the underground, there were loads of seats and it left from our front gate and took us all the way to our destination the Nationla Gallery. National Gallery, number 2 on Trip Advisor after the Big Fat Tires and I agree. Billions of dollars of amazing works of art and all [View Full Entry]

9/4/09 So I had an interview at the Swan yesterday. It’s a cute little pub across the rd which boasts the largest pub garden in London. They’re a pretty multicultural bunch. Polish, Irish, Aussie. The Adelaide chick is leaving so she wants to replace her with another Aussie. It seems like a really close-knit and friendly team. Two problems. First, she thought that I may have had hospitality experience that I hadn’t put on my resume. I don’t know why anyone would not put relevant experience onto a cv they’d handed in. She was happy enough with me that she said [View Full Entry]

6/4/09 I’ve finally found it!!! The perfect job! It’s a receptionist position (very little in the way of life/death responsibility), at a book publishing firm. So they need someone with “a bubbly personality” who’s a “bookworm”. Hello!!!! Right here!! There’s a couple of good things about job hunting. First, you come across the craziest job descriptions. Eg Trampoline trainer. And also it gives you the same feeling you get when you’re flirting with a guy (and you’re single). You know? The possibilities that waft into your head. S [View Full Entry]

Wow, 3 months sure is a long time between blogs. So long in fact that since the last post we made we have quit our London jobs, moved out of our London flat and temporarily left the UK on a tour around the northeastern US and Canada. But before we start the series of blogs covering our US trip, there are a few more UK stories to update you on first. Anna’s parents were over for a visit to London in September and Anna had kindly invited us out to a meal with them at one of Gordon Ramsey’s London restaurants. [View Full Entry]

Dear Sara Foster- It is day three and I am already regretting booking hostles for pretty much our ENTIRE trip.. So, everything has been fine for the most part- i was sitting by myself on the plane, our hostle is alright (clean and not terribly located, with internet and free breakfast! ), we've been agreeing on where to go/what to see for the most part... and then yesterday, we went to the Eric Clapton concert (which was AMAZING, but the way, except that Lindsey was complaining the ENTIRE time about her allergies and how she couldn't wait for it to be [View Full Entry]
