We celebrated Christmas at home together this year. We had the house to ourselves and we gorged ourselves on food and wine, particularly enjoying the Tobin Shiraz (of Ballendean, QLD) sent by our friends Lou and Rob. Thank you everyone for your kind gifts and thoughts this Christmas Ailsa and Brett.... read more

Heyas, Sorry about the lack of news, but I've been very slack. We've been fairly busy for the last couple of weeks, I've scored a job for 1 month as a C# developer, which is OK, but I need to get a longer contract. In holidaying news Ailsa and I have been checking out Hampton Court and Regent Gardens, blog entry and photos to come. I've been to Leeds Castle, lots of photos for that and I think we'll go back there together for sure. (We're also returning to Hampton Court because there's just too much to see). I'm also going to post an entry on Christs Church Spitalfields, near the Old Spitalfields Market, because we wandered in and took lots of photos. The weather has been very warm the last few days and we're enjoying ... read more

Spring Bank Holiday Monday. For some reason I find this very "Bridget Jones". Well, it makes it my second four-day working week, so I'm not complaining. And (how English of me) the weather was quite nice in patches. See exhibit A, the photo of Brett in a deckchair at Hyde Park Corner wearing a jumper and coat and freezing in the wind. We sat around much of the morning waiting for our washing to dry (always a touch-and-go prospect) but that's really just an excuse for our long lie-in. We went back to bed, had a late breakfast, watched some truly junky day-time TV, had some lunch, and decided to actually do something with this free time off. So we headed off to the bus. A word about public transport to start with. I had a ... read more

The weather of late has been mostly cold, wet and windy, so yesterday afternoon when the sun came out and London gave us a taste of the potential of summer I took the opportunity to sit in our garden and listen to the song of a little robin. Our back garden is seriously close to bursting into bloom. It's full of rose bushes covered in clusters of rose buds, but still so young that I can't tell what colour they will be. Sina, the landlady, is busily planting tomatoes, lettuce and carrots in every available patch of sunlight. The rhubarb has been relegated to a shady spot by the back fence where it is struggling. The side fence holds the promise of rasberries and possibly blueberries later in the summer. Ailsa and I are doing quite ... read more

Hi We have just finished our tour of London town. First off, thanks to Lisa for her hospitality and to Ngaire for lending us her room... We have very sore feet as we landed in London in the evening on Saturday and walked everywhere else ever since... with the odd ride on the tube thrown in for good measure. The first night there we went to a pub full of aussies and stretched our legs a bit after the long flight. On Sunday we visited Camden Market and then went for a lovely summer afternoon stroll down to the Thames with Lisa and her cousin Sally, who is also in England at the moment. After a good soaking from a tour bus, we stopped for coffee, then caught the tube down Aldgate East and wandered down ... read more

This is pretty much a photo entry about where we'll be living for probably the next 6 months. Our private part of the house is just our room and ensuite, but the ensuite contains a long bath/shower unit and is certainly large enough to swing a cat in. Our bedroom's also pretty spacious with heaps of storage space. We share the kitchen and living room with two ladies from France and Spain whom we haven't met yet; their rooms are on the second floor which we haven't stuck our noses into, but hopefully we'll get an invite to explore when they return from their holidays. The garden is great. Our landlady Sina lives next door; she's a very keen gardener and has planted a vegie garden in our back yard. I could imagine living so close ... read more

Jingle bells, jingle Bells, Jingle all the way, oh what fun it is to drink, on a dull old London Day Hay! Our first Xmas here was great! Santa arrived early and decided to stay cause he was to boozed. We had all the comforts of home with a massive roast and trimmings. Then it was time to open the gifts - the highlight of the day. 2 days later I rang Dad to say merry Xmas ,and sorry that I didn't give him a call on the day. I was then told that we had already spoken for about 1/2 hour Xmas morning. Must have been that eggnog! ... read more

Just a quick note to advise that I have arrived safely back in the UK and made it through my first 2 weekends and a week of work. Lets just say after 4 months off work proved a small shock to the system as the mass of grey matter which resides in my head was forced for the first time in a while to think!!!! Before starting work though I had a couple days to aclimatise......what better way than a session at the Temple walkabout to celebrate Australia Day......started early, went late and woke up with a sore head! The other thing which I had to get used to was the fact that it was cold. Having not experienced cold weather (aside from 3 days in Dublin in Oct) since May 02, this has proven to ... read more
