D Day minus 5. Departure Day minus 5. 5 more sleeps. Whatever way you look at it there are just five days until we set off on our last European trip of the year. Destination the Iberian Peninsula. For some reason this trip seems odd. So much is going on in Europe it is hard to know what sort of trip it will become. Over the last few weeks migrants have swarmed all over the Channel tunnel complex, they have stormed the tunnel entrance . Our Prime Minister has allocated money to help the french defend the border . New fences have been erected. Migrants have been found dead in lorries which have been abandoned. The TV is full of nothing else. Hungary is overrun with Syrian migrants making their way from Turkey to what they ... read more

We drop Barbie off at the station. She's a civil celebrant, and she needs to go back to London for the day to officiate at the funeral of one of her daughter's friends. We visit Auntie Beth again, but unfortunately today she's unresponsive. She looks like she's trying to open her eyes, but just can't quite manage it. We tell her we'll come back again tomorrow, but we're not sure that she understands. Sally says that this is unfortunately far more typical than the brightness of yesterday. We drive to the small town of Ely, which is the home of a large and apparently famous cathedral. The signs in the car park say that parking here is free, and that anyone who parks here should tell their friends about it. It seems to be working; the ... read more

We remembered visiting Wimpole Hall, Royston near Cambridge several years ago. John & Mary took us there on 1 April 2015. Despite the cloudy weather, there were a lot of visitors to the Wimpole Estate. After lunch, we walked o the house. We remembered the red-brick façade and sizeable ground. We started looking round from the Entrance Hall. One of the ushers suggested for us to look at the illusionistic murals in the chapel from the balcony. There were a number of distinctive rooms on the ground floor – South Drawing Room, Long Gallery, Book Room, Red Room, Yellow Drawing Room, Saloon, Breakfast Room and Ground Dining Room. I remembered the South Drawing Room, featuring feminine style room – cream and buff colours to match with the Ante Room – collections of pretty porcelain and portraits ... read more

What a fun day! I'm still a little jetlagged, but I probably got 8-9 hours of sleep last night anyhow. Getting up at 6:30AM GMT was no easy task for me, though knowing where we were going certainly made it easier. Trains are such a wonderful deal throughout most of Europe, and England is no different - provided that you order online and early enough. This was my first trip to Cambridge, and I recommend visiting it, if you get a chance. The trip up to Cambridge took an hour from London. It turns out that the train station at Cambridge is actually nowhere near the university. It was over a mile to walk there, so we were grateful for the exercise and ate accordingly more food than we would have otherwise. We found this wonderful ... read more

Today is Hereward the Wake Day. Today a visit to Ely and the Fens. Another bus trip and yet another cathedral built on the proceeds of wool. The night was cold in Suzy despite having the heating turned up. Still better in the cold in Suzy than at home I say. Any trip away is a bonus even in the bitterly cold of a January day. A little snow fell on the roof but not enough to stick . It was too cold for that. Kathrein has been acting up. She goes up but fails to respond to the command to come on down. Eventually after much trying she does give up, we win and she comes down. For those not familiar with our friend Kathrein she is an all singing, all dancing German satelitte dish ... read more

We had one more visit to make and that was going to be Peterborough. To get there our first move was from the site at Cambridge and to drive the hour to Peterborough to our new stop for the night at the Nene Valley Park in a Caravan Club site. It was Saturday the morning was dank and cold and there was a slight frost covering everything from the trees to the grass. Everywhere looked white and glistening in the early morning light. We left the site before most people had risen and left our barrier key in the letter box . The drive was pretty awful and we had not expected much traffic on the road so it was rather a surprise to be stuck in a traffic jam. For mile after mile we crawled ... read more

After our crepes and coffee we walked across the road, nay we snaked and weaved our way between hoards of college students walking, riding their bikes and taking selfies. Heading for Kings College we took our lives in our own hands. Entrance to the front is completely barred unless you are a student, It was a long walk for us plebs and non students around to the tradesmens entrance at the back of the building. Entrance fee is £5.50 for over 65's and £9 for under 65's. I wish all of Europe would make a rule as to what an OAP is. Sometimes it is over 65, other times it is over 60 and occaisionally in France mostly it is not at all. Why cannot everyone abide by the same rule I wonder? Wouldnt it be ... read more

Along the path , the gaze of the moon follows you . The tangled branches. there on the snow mark out the signs of your thoughts - Francois Cheng. What makes me write this ? And who is Francoise Cheng ? French poet and philosopher with a chinese background perhaps - not sure I care who he is as the poetry is rather thought provoking and apt as we are deep in the throes of a British winter. Sprinkles of snow fell gently last night initially covering the earth and the trees with a dusting reminiscent of icing sugar almost 4" deep . Through all of this though there are sings of Spring as we have seen the first daffodils in the park and the first of the early lilac flowering crocii. Crocii or Crocuses - ... read more

The run up to a holiday is always a busy time. Trying to work out what clothes to take. Will we need jumpers? Will it be cold? Do we need that thicker coat? Should we just take thin clothing and hope for the best. The long range 2 week weather forecast was giving us few clues. We completed filling Suzy’s fridge full of enough food to last about three days. We took our currency and our passports together with Suzy’s file which contains train tickets, campsite bookings and booking for our Padua card up to the van. We thought a lot about what we needed and gave up as usual thinking that if we have forgotten something it won’t be the end of the world. Have we got everything? Even after two and a half years ... read more
