Three Weeks. Five Countries. Eleven Flights. I've decided to keep a blog of my holiday for people to follow without having to worry about the privacy of Facebook or flooding my twitter feed. Only two and a half days until I leave for the first of many flights and things are starting to get real. All flights and hostels booked, now I just have to wait. I've created a montage of the predicted weather for each location. One week is better than here, one week the same and one week worse than home. Two days I wanted sunny are cloudy. But Accuweather isn't the most accurate, especially the further into the future you go so I'm keeping my finger crossed. ... read more

Two weeks ago we made a road trip out to Godmachester in search of some of my family history. My great great grandfather, Alfred Simpson Pond was from there, born in 1853. We found the street that he and family lived in, St Anns Lane. We didn’t know which house it was, or if it still existed, but a rather helpful little old lady said she knew the Pond family name, and said it was quite common around there. The town of Godmanchester is really pretty, and does great fish and chips! The building of the fish shop was from the 1600’s, so there’s a chance my GG grandfather was once in there too. Luckily the produce was a bit fresher. We had our fish and chips in a really nice park on the lake. We ... read more

August 27 Cambridge – Addenbrooks Hospital - I did some extensive research on the internet and at local resources and figured out that the hospital that Mom trained at during the war in Cambridge before going to London to work as a nurse there was at the AddenBrooks Hospital which had its name changed during the war to First Eastern General Hospital. It is now the Judges Institute. The building has been repainted and remodeled a bit but is still essentially the same. I am sure it was nowhere near as colorful during the war. Judges Institute formerly Addenbrooks Hospital renamed First Eastern General Hospital during the war(which was the name Mom recognized when I called her today). People in Cambridge call it Old Addenbrooks since a new Addenbrooks Hospital has been built in another part ... read more

August 28 Tuesday - The weather turned out a bit hot today at 71 but other than that it was very nice. I rode the “hop on, hop off” tour bus around town and then just walked around a bit looking at the city. They have some really beautiful and impressive buildings here. Tomorrow morning I will head to Portsmouth. I will have to go in to London to Kings Cross station , then take a subway to the Waterloo Station to go to Portsmouth. The directions don’t look too complicated. I had thought about staying a few more days but the hostel was booked up so I guess I will head on to Portsmouth. I will just go through London and save exploring London for later in this trip when I will return to it ... read more

August 25 Saturday Liverpool to Cambridge This morning I got up early and went down to the lunchroom and had a banana and my tea for breakfast. I had intended to have some of my Muesli but someone had pinched it from my bag in the cabinet in the kitchen. It was clearly marked with my name and room number so there was no chance of a mistake. So I had tea and a banana and some yogurt for breakfast. I had intended on leaving for the station later but after finishing my tea I rearranged things a bit in my bags and then just called a cab to take me to Lime Street Station. It was only a bit after 8 when I arrived at the station so I waited a bit and then noticed ... read more

It just doesn't seem possible to rest my feet here, there is always places to go, people to see, sleep to not get. I'm starting to think people are lying about the weather here in England; so far it has been at least 22degrees everyday and really really humid! So being another beautiful day in England we decided to go punting in Cambridge. Cambridge is about 1 hour from Biggleswade, but instead of driving all the way into the main town we drove to a Park and Ride and took a bus into the centre. I've heard of Oxford being beautiful (and I'm sure to see it one day) but Cambridge will be pretty hard to beat. Apparently the weekends are always busy in the summer and there is always a market in the centre. This ... read more

Here's a mansion home with an unusual history. It's a history related to us by the owner, Christopher Vane Percy (a descendant of Thomas Percy of failed 1605 'Gunpowder Plot' fame), and his wife, Lady Linda (a member of the noble Grosvenor family) when we visited Island Hallwith friends last week. First, though, a word about the location of this delightful house. It's in the pretty little town of Godmanchester, which stands on the River Great Ouse in the county of Cambridgeshire. It's about 90 kms (55 miles) north of London. It's surprising what you can discover simply by looking at a town's sign. The one seen here depicts the River and a "Chinese" Bridge that spans it, a Roman legionnaire, a Danish longboat, St Mary's Chur... read more

Just an hour north of London, Cambridge is of course most famous for its university (founded around 1209, 2nd oldest after Oxford) which is composed of 31 colleges. King's College Chapel is probably the most famous of the university's buildings in Cambridge. Access to many of the colleges is prohibited or severely restricted for tourists. Also famous in Cambridge is punting-- standing on a flat boat, using a long pole to push the boat along the River Cam.... read more

Well it has finally happened. The rain held off and the day was perfect. The blessing service was held in the chapel of The Peterborough School (Victoria's old school) and the reception in a marquee of the grounds. We spent Friday and Saturday morning setting up the marquee. Vicky's Aunty Margaret supplied 130 china place settings that she has collected over the years as well as providing the flowers that decorated the tables. It all looked beautiful. Friends from all over the world gathered and enjoyed the service and reception. For those familiar with the story Victoria and Todd were married in 2009 in Las Vegas as that was where they met. For them to be together Todd needed a visa to be in England so marriage in Las Vegas was the obvious answer knowing that the ... read more

Cambridge, England~ London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay I have to admit we absolutely love the Olympics. The fact that they are being held in London this year...while were here, is amazing. So, the torch is being run all over the country. Here's a little history from http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/about/ ...The torch was lit in Greece and then arrived in the UK May 18 2012. It would travel over 70 days through 1,000 cities, viallges, and towns throughout the country. It was carried by over 8,000 inspirational people who were all nominated and chosen. They included the young and old, present and former athletes and olympians, other famous people, and military members. We looked and saw the Torch Relay would be coming through Cambridge-which is 20 min away-and we had to go. The event wa... read more
