Well, we now have 7 sleeps to go and tonight marks my penultimate night shift before I hand in my Police id card (for safe keeping???) before I start my epic 4 1/2 months off work to embark on our trip of a lifetime. At the moment Alex and I keep discussing our excitement factor and at the moment I guess I have to admit it’s at about 3/10. I think the moment we start packing it will zoom up and the moment I leave home on our train journey to Heathrow airport it is gonna go sky high. I’m certainly not bothered by the thought of a 26 1/2 hour journey (35 1/2 hrs door to door). Bring it on. That’s why god invented inflight entertainment, iPads, booze and sleeping pills! To everybody that have ... read more

Today we planned to go for a guided walk around the town of Cambridge so that we could see wheee the major colleges wee and get an insight into the history of the university. The weather was again variable, but thankfully here did not seem to be rain coming in the morning, when we would walk. The walk left from the fudge kitchen at 11am, so we were there in plenty of time. There were lots of tours walking around, with guides giving information in a great variety of langauges. our guide, Catherine, was a recent graduate of Catherine College. Although there was a slight bias in her information, with a history degree, she was certainly able to explain the different rebellions and changes in the long history of the university. As we began our walk ... read more

This morning we packed and set off for Heathrow again to pick up our car. We had to wait a while for the car to be located and washed, but eventu we were on our way. With enough data on the phone, we used it as our gps, and were soon on our way to the motorway. Our first objective was Duxford, and the Imperial war museum. Duxford is a flying base, now 100 years old. It has a variety of displays- planes on static display, planes being reconditioned, the history of the airfield, and an American museum recognising that the Americans took over the base and used it in WW2. The weather was very average today, rain, sun, wind. We got it all. The base is quite big, and at one point as we were ... read more

Another lovely morning in Norfolk. A pity we have to move on but then again we are catching up with our daughter and her husband in London. Always a special moment. We have another delicious breakfast, a bit lighter this time. The bags are packed, car loaded, and we’re off. As we head along the lane we catch up with Farmer Brown driving his tractor and pulling an overloaded trailer piled high with hay bales. As he drives along, the roadside trees are removing large amounts of hay from either the side bales or ones on top. Hay blows everywhere. Hay is left hanging from the trees. We keep our distance just in case a bale is dislodged. The locals must be thrilled to have all this hay accumulating in their lane. But then again living ... read more

Geo: 52.2, 0.11667 First a story. After 9 years, it might be time to retire old Tom. Tom is our Tomtom GPS. I got it as a retirement gift from the guys that I worked with. When I tried to update Tom before we left, it would get to 90% and then would say it failed. We took Tom anyway, knowing that his maps were 8 years old. But as Tom has gotten older, he has gotten slower too. We were pulling up to an intersection yesterday and he told us to go left. As we sat waiting for the light to change, he suddenly told us to go right. Since we were in the left lane I went left. We waited for him to tell us to make a U-turn, but instead he was happy ... read more

The BBA V3 heads north today and into Cambridgeshire. This is going to mean driving the M2 to take us under the Thames River and then onto the great circle road around London the M25 for a short distance before the direction will be northerly. It has been pleasantly surprising just how quiet our room in the Days Inn in the M20 rest area has been with traffic coming and going .The curtains in the room have very effectively kept the light out until we were ready to face the day. The Tesco croissants we had yesterday were still OK but we miss the toast and jam and it will nice to have our own catering facilities back again tonight. We had that feeling as we entered the M20 at the on ramp from the rest ... read more

The most memorable part of my visit to Cambridge was a short stay in the city of Ely – the loveliest place I have ever been at. Unlike other diminutive English towns that we had passed by, Ely seemed very strange. A gigantic cathedral, which towered over everything around, struck our eyes as we approached the city by train. Because of its enormous size, it looked fabulous against the backdrop of two-story brick houses. That magnificent building was Ely Cathedral. And yet it was closed for some reason, I could enjoy its external beauty forever. Near the cathedral there was a local fair where people sold all kinds of handmade things (shawls, paintings, carvings, etc.). There I tried one of the tastiest homemade pies in my life, and it was so palatable that I bought two. ... read more
