A day out at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford (near the famous university city of Cambridge) is a Big Day Out. The blurb said "there is much more than most people can see in a day" and boy, they were not wrong. We gave it a red hot go but failed. I'm told the Smithsonian in Washington has an astounding display of historic aircraft and spacecraft, but this place would go close. About the only thing missing from this UK version is a Space Shuttle. Spread across a number of hangers and other historic buildings along the airfield, the museum is home to every conceivable British aircraft since the dawn of flight, a (small) piece of the Wright Bros Flyer, the American Air Museum (AAM), a land warfare exhibition, Battle of Britain ops room and host ... read more

Given England's reputation for inclement weather, we have been extraordinarily lucky all week with mild, sunny days and hardly any rain. But the day I most wanted great weather was today and it was glorious. This morning we took a chauffeured punt on the Cam, looking at the beautiful colleges and bridges as we glided along. The Wren Library wasn't open (we are having bad luck with libraries!) so after our punt we spent plenty of time in the gorgeous Kings College Chapel enjoying the architecture and stained glass windows. We picnicked on The Backs and then had a walk along the country lanes to Grantchester. I think it is the prettiest place we have been: an abundance of well-maintained thatched cottages and pretty gardens, plus, of course, The Old Vicarage which I have 'known' most ... read more

Our morning and afternoon activities were a sharp contrast in style, values and historical period. This morning we strolled around the gorgeous 18th Century Stowe gardens with its artificial lakes, temples and follies. The landscaping is gloriously extravagant including a Temple of British worthies, a Chinese house and a Gothic castle. We also toured Stowe House, now part of Stowe Grammar, which includes a vast elliptical hall and a magnificent library. This afternoon we visited Bletchley Park Museum, where British code breakers cracked the Nazi enigma code in WWII. It's a monument to ingenuity and also to the power of the outsider - three quarters of the BP code breakers were women and many others - including the brilliant Alan Turing (tragically persecuted for being homosexual) were outsiders whose value to the society was never appreciated. ... read more

Geo: 52.2025, 0.131237So off we go on the bus, yes the public transport thing. This bus runs down an old disbanded railway line that cars cannot access, thus making the trip very straight forward. Brilliant! Rob, Chris and I went into Cambridge for a spot of study, sightseeing, lunch and naturally beer tasting. Why not? we ask ourselves. Nobody has to drive.Beautiful city.... read more

We love visiting our friends in Cambridge. Somehow we always seem to discover great places when we go there. This time was no exception. First there was a great walk in the Cambridgeshire countryside near their home in Cambourne. Lakes lined with fishermen, windmills, cornfields - it had it all. And to top it off, the sun was shining and it was a glorious day. We also went into the city of Cambridge for another wander around. It was very busy with tourists from all over the world taking a look at one of the most famous seats of learning that the UK has to offer. It's always nice to see people having a go at punting too, but we remember from last time just what hard work it was! We were quite surprised to see ... read more

Suzy the motorhome is just starting out her adventure today. Our first trip of 2014. It started with the inevitable trip to the supermarket to buy groceries to fill up the fridge, moving her off the drive which was no mean task and filling her up with water. We set out just after lunch. The journey taking us a very different way to the Channel Tunnel. None of the half hour drive to from Wales to England and then another hour before hitting the M6. This time heading south to Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Robin Hood, Maid Marian, the Sheriff of Nottingham and Sherwood forest fame. Beyond that to Lincolnshire – flat, pig breeding country and into Rutland which was until government reorganisation in 1974 the smallest county in England. Its motto Multo en parva – something big ... read more

Sometimes you cannot believe just how quickly times passes. It was 30 days to the trip and counting. That has now dropped down to 12 days. All of a sudden it is upon us. Suzy is stuck on the drive. Hemmed in by the laurel hedge and a full skip of rubbish. Until that moves she won't be going anywhere. Holiday insurance sorted. Having dumped our previous company as they had put the premium up to £175 for the two of us for a year we decided to use that lovely company LV much loved by civil servants who are lucky enough to get deductions off premiums if they are member of the Civil Service Motoring Association. I joined last year and we saved a large amount of money changing car insurances and house insurances plus ... read more

The first trip that I took with the ISA was to Cambridge. Approximately 70% of that town is composed of colleges, another 20% is churches, and the remaining percentage is a mix of pubs and shops. It's a lovely old place, full of gothic architecture and typical English mist. We visited King's College first, passing secret gardens and crossing bridges until we reached the main courtyard. You'll find this out soon enough, but I have a deep love for old buildings, especially old churches. The main chapel was full of intricate stone carvings and it was bisected by a tall wooden screen donated by Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, supposedly a few years before he got chop-happy. There were people buried in the floor, which didn't really thrill me. I seemed to have an uncanny knack ... read more
