Sunday 27 July - Friday 8 August 2008 As most of you already know, the biggest thing to happen on this leg of the journey was our engagement. The majestic Swiss Alps and picturesque lakes of Interlaken were the perfect setting and are our favourite places so far. But more of that later.... We’d hit the road by midday in our red rental Hyundai that was jam packed with camping odds and ends. (Those soccerball patterned ‘Euro Cup’ camp chairs were a steal at five Euros.) The basic plan was to head west to Switzerland, hang out around the Alps for a week and then make our way back to Vienna via northern Italy. By the end of the first day we’d got about three hours from Vienna. Neither of us was complaining though because we ... read more

Land between lakes - Interlakin As the obvious name implies, Interlakin - is a town in the glen between two big emerald green lakes and imposing snow clad mountains. Its ideal location at the foot hills of the Swiss alps makes it the perfect base camp town for forays into the likes of Europes higest mountains Jungfru, Shilthorn etc. Perhaps Latterbrunnen would be the perfect place however it doesnt have the charm of Interlakin. Charming town When I talk about charm of Interlakin - the place is really charming indeed, so much so that a couple in their 70s from Boston USA have been going to Interlakin for the last 24 years !!!, without fail except for one odd year when one of them got sick and couldn't travel. Well this place is for sure, charmed ... read more

WOW!!! That is basically the only way I can describe the last two days of my life!!!!! I arrived in Switzerland yesterday morning and before I even put my bags in my room, I went to check out all of the extreme sports that they offer. Before I knew it, I was signed up to go bungy jumping at 4:00 THAT DAY!!!! I was going to do the smaller one, but decided to just go for it all the way! I jumped from a gondola over a lake at 480 feet!!!!! That's the second highest bungy jump in the WORLD!!!!! It was the most insane thing EVER!!! I was scared and excited and my heart was pounding and I LOVED IT!!!! I don't think I've ever done anything like it...it was so much different than skydiving. ... read more

For the last few days we have been in Interlaken, Switzerland, which is at the base of the giant Swiss Alps. It definitely feels like authentic Switzerland out here with huge mountains, the best tap water in the world, mountain goats and other livestock around every corner, and of course, good ol’ alpine cheese! We started our adventures with a cruise around Lake Thun, which is one of the two major lakes that Interlaken is sandwiched between, hence the name Interlaken. David and I could not believe the color of the water. It was the brightest teal we had ever seen. David kept saying that it looked dyed, like the water used in the Disneyland rides. After our Swiss cruise we went back at town and had an authentic Swiss meal of McDonalds because restaurant food ... read more

I know that this entry is a long time coming, but I feel like I finally have a minute to sit back and process all that I experienced when David and I visited Ardfert, Ireland. For those of you who are unfamiliar, my grandmother, Catherine (Harris) Corwin was born and raised in Massachusetts, USA and then moved to the Pacific Northwest after she met my grandpa, Philip Corwin. Her parents and grandparents were from Ireland. Growing up, that’s about all I knew about my families heritage on that side. While David and I were in Ireland this July (wow that seems like a long time ago!) we contacted relatives with the help of my Aunt Cindy in order to uncover more about my Irish heritage. First, we emailed Pete Tallman, a third cousin living in Massachusetts. ... read more

Hello, Ian here! I am finally writing one of these again cause I managed to get alone time and snuck away from kate. She feels when I write I take away from her writing because you all are so riveted by mine. Kidding... Well, we haven't written in awhile due to being busy and all but that is a good thing! Here in Switzerland there is the most breathtaking sights in nature that one can see. It is amazing as a whole. Um I really wanted to jump out of a plane or off a rock here but it is just to damn expensive to try and kill yourself here! We went up to the highest point in europe and it was amazing! we got to go into an ice palace and play in the snow ... read more

Hello all, Firstly, sorry again about the lack of photos - will do a big blog with photos when i get some time. So i made it to interlaken, but this was before a crazy night train. Certainly an experience if you do any travel! I got on at Bolonga in Italy at about 11.30pm and stupid me was thinking it'd be this nice carriage where all the ppl would be girls and we'd chat and then id get into pj's, brush my teeth, and go to sleep before waking up in a new country. Wrong....as it was so late, everyone was already asleep, all the luggage spaces were taken, as was my bed by a lady who asked whether we could swap as she had a small child (who was already asleep in the bed) ... read more

The Land between the Lakes—Interlaken, Switzerland. Interlaken is located right between the lakes of Thun and Brienz in the Swiss Alps. WOW, what a spectacular place. Prior to deciding on going to Interlaken, we had read countless journals, stories and guidebooks about this fantastic destination. Many people complained about how expensive it is and that if you weren’t into extreme sports you would not be happy. Guess what folks—Interlaken is our second favorite stop on the tour so far. We spent 7 days in the Interlaken area and every day was action packed for the both of us. For those of you who are keeping track, we spent from the 25th of July through the 1st of August. In lieu of giving you a daily blow-by-blow account of this remarkable leg of the trip, I will ... read more

We arrived in Switzerland after a nice night of non sleeping and hearing an old non speaking english man snore his face off. Exhausted we decided to travel around the banking world of Zurich, we spent a total of one hour there, looking at the stores in the railway station and that is about it, you could see the banks on the way in on the train, and that was about it. Then we got back on another train and made our way to Luzren, which from what I see on the internet is in the South west of Switzerland. Terri with her keen sense of smell for chocolate, dove off the train and ran to the nearest store to see what the Swiss had to offer. We didn't even get out of the train station, ... read more
