Interesting fact: The Swiss invented LSD and Absinthe - not bad for a country of bankers and neutrality! Whilst aboard the TGV train from Dijon to Bern, we are confronted with the sound Click Ching Click Ching Click Ching, wondering what the bloody hell that was, we noticed this chap sitting alone in his seat looking into his mobile phone camera striking a pose and taking a snap of himself Click Ching - not a normal camera sound I know but that was the noise it made, for 45 minutes this dude changed pose and Click Ching!!!!! We arrived late into Bern the Capital of Switzerland so we headed to the nearest hotel which surprise surprise was a 4 star Savoy Group Hotel for 200 Swiss francs and fell into Bed. Yes, Laura one down but ... read more

Switzerland: 28th May - 6th June 2009 We weren't supposed to go to Switzerland, but a few days before we left Florence, it seemed the right thing to do. We found an apartment in a chalet near Interlaken in a small town called Aeshi set among a dramatic landscape and beautiful lakes. We knew immediately that it was a nice place because there were plenty of senior couples seated on park benches blissfully and serenely viewing the lakes...a good sign. With that, we knew that one week here would be too short, so we decided to stay two. Before we arrived, Switzerland conjured images of numbered bank accounts, fondue, and mountains. But, reading a little about the history, I was surprised to learn that this country was another “against-all-odds” story. It started with three regions (“cantons”) ... read more

On Monday I got to see Katie for the first time in nearly five months, and I got to reunite with her in the absolutely beautiful country of Switzerland. After graduating at the beginning of May, Katie has been traveling Europe for the past couple of weeks with her friends Emily and Annie. The original plan was for me to travel with them for a week or so and then fly with them back to Alicante for a couple of days on the beach before we all flew out of Madrid on June 5th. However, I changed my flight home about a month ago from the 5th to the 1st to be able to spend more than just a day at home and consequently messed up their travel plans quite a bit. So, in the ... read more

It may not come as a shock to anyone that I laughed until I cried today. However, I don't remember the last time that it happened about seven times in one day, not to only just me, but everyone who I was with. Our first activity of the day was traveling to Interlaken, a city nearly two hours away from Engelberg. Lucky for us, we had two busses, so there were no disturbances like the ones yesterday. The Victorian Jungfrau is a 5 star hotel located in this city. Gracious, it was immaculate! With rooms starting at 690 franks per night, it has the potential to go up to 5,000 franks/ night. Mere pocket change, of course... After about an hour of a tour throughout the hotel (in my most uncomfortable shoes that I own!) we ... read more

Another beautiful (and rigorous) day in Switzerland. Unfortunately I’m having real trouble going to sleep still, and this was exacerbated last night by the fact that I could not get my nightstand light to turn off. The lights are hard wired into the wall, and mine decided that it would not go off. I finally put a dark shirt over my eyes around 3 a.m. and slept okay until the wake up call at 7 a.m. Today was a big day- we had a trip to the Five Star Hotel Victoria-Jungfrau in Interlaken and a trip to VCT Hotel Management School in Vitznau. The trip to Interlaken was gorgeous- it looked a lot like the mountains around Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. The lakes here are crystal clear and blue green, and seem so inviting. Every ... read more

This morning we started out in Interlaken for a tour of a the Grand Hotel, a 5 star hotel in Interlaken. It was a gorgeous hotel, but it confused me because it was grand and luxurious and old on the outside, but inside it was updated and modern in parts, it just didn't seem like anything really went together. It was interesting to me how they had 2 small beds then pushed them together to make a big bed for their double rooms. The rooms were beautiful and had some great views. I wouldn't mind staying there, that's for sure. Lunch was delicious at their Pastateca as well. I had the pasta with garlic pesto and prawns. Then for desert we had some ice cream on a biscotti with rum sauce. Amazing. We then headed to ... read more

Not much to say for today. We visited the Victoria-Jungfrau hotel which is one of the best hotel's in Switzerland. I believe it is a 5 Star hotel. We got a back of the house tour and we were able to see the kitchens, all 3 restaurants, 3 different classes of rooms, and the conference center. We also got to have lunch at the Pasta restaurant. The food as always was awesome! We had an antipasti selection for our appetizer, 2 different pasta dishes to choose from (mine was fusilli pasta with a cheese sauce and beef strips). For dessert we had a rum sabayon (think a light whipped topping thinner than Cool Whip) with chocolate ice cream. Then we headed to the DCT Swiss Hotel Management School where we were given a tour of the ... read more

PROMPT: Describe the level of service at the hotel we visited. How was your dining experience at lunch? Discuss the zero star hotel concept. If you observed students at the hospitality school, did you notice any differences than the students at SFA? The level of service at the Victoria-Jungfrau hotel was clearly a very high caliber. All of the dining rooms featured real silver utensils which are not usually seen in everyday dining facilities. The rooms were also impeccable and very beautiful, especially the fresh fruit that was left for the guests who were arriving later that day. The service we received during lunch was fantastic. The main host was very pleasant and welcoming when we arrived. He also explained our menu to each table and made his own recommendations. The wait staff was also very ... read more

My Last blog entry ended with a bit of a cliffhanger. Sorry. On Wednesday 13th I (Donna) flew home from Geneva after we received very worrying news that my 22 year old son had been taken to hospital with a fractured spine. A worrying 4 day wait for him in hospital to get a full diagnosis but the outcome was thankfully the best we could hope for. His fracture was stable and there was no neurological damage. He was discharged and home very soon and I was able to fly back to rejoin Martin who had been on standby to return home with the ’van in Geneva . We quickly hitched up again and towed back to Interlaken where we had been when our trip was interrupted . Since then we have enjoyed glorious weather ... read more
