While being in London was impressive and taking in Paris was undeniably beautiful, we at long last made our way to a peaceful time at the world’s capitol of peace, Geneva. While this city has roots going back to the 1st century B.C. with Roman take over, it has a long history of being a major in between player within European history. At this time of course, Switzerland has taken the role of being a dominantly neutral state and choosing to not take any sides in world confrontations. To its credit, it has allowed a place for numerous international organizations, such as many UN departments, to work in peace and security. I suppose if you come to think about it, there should always at least be some zone of peace where people can talk and listen. ... read more

So, after all the planning, stressing, list making and packing i'm here :) I arrived at about 4pm yesterday - flight was delayed by an hour and a half but somehow we made up that half an hour somewhere! After getting off the plane and making my way through the passport check (it was quicker for me with my EU passport) i went to the baggage carousel and sat myself down to wait for my suitcase, still a bit groggy from the travel sickness tablets. As soon as my bum hit the floor however, it started moving and there was my luggage! I mean i've heard of Swiss efficiency before, but this was awesome! Before leaving the baggage area i remembered to visit a ticket machine that would give me a free 80min travel ticket as ... read more

... read more

Hello Family and Friends, As you know I am leaving on a world trip for six months through Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, hopefully Tibet, China and finally USA. Well this is only the plan but hopefully it will all work out. I will attempt to regularly update pictures and stories of my trip on this blog to keep you all informed and up to speed. I am now in my final 48hours before departure and quite sincerely it has been a marathon to get all the visas in time. I only yesterday got my last visa and should hopefully now have a trouble free trip. Hope you are all well and I will do my best to keep in touch... Lots of greetings and hugs to all of you.... read more

turns out I did not manage to recover completely in Annecy. Taking a longer brake in Geneva, mainly on the campground. And as my friend said, you can hear everything here (birds, dogs, frogs and people occasionally). I eat, drink and I live well. The froggies disturb silence in the night so I have to drink for a good night sleeping cheers or cheerios one might say. Daccor c'est fini pour moi pour cette moment. tbc ;) ... read more

Well Richard and i left cool Adelaide bound for Melbourne. Only a short stop over before we took off again for Abu Dhabi. The flight was jam packed and poor Richard was stuck in a seat with his knees around his ears, behind a little man who insisted on reclining his seat and shoving his armrest into Richards already tortured knees. There were no spare seats to move too. Isnt it amazing on a plane full of poeple from all around the world and when there is an alert for swine flu someone then everyone start to sneeze & cough i would keep my hand over my mouth for minutes at a time,,,,,, :-) 14 hours later and a little grumpy we landed at Abu Dhabi for a few hours respite. Back on the plane for ... read more

Geneva Switzerland My (Donna’s) *X!*% tooth extraction was a night mare , (for all concerned. ) It’s now 6 weeks since it happened and I still have a crater in my jaw in which I could easily store enough food to last me a day! (eughh) It’s now healing slowly but still disturbs my sleep. My so called simple extraction developed complications ; infection and “Dry socket”. My dentist said once in every 3-4 years he sees one as slow to heal as mine! Nice to know I’m special. It sort of ruined our trip home. I naively? expected to be fighting fit again a few days after the extraction but instead felt very poorly and exhausted for over a month by the pain. I was not nice to know a lot of the time, ... read more

Six months. It took me six months and the decision to go back to Canada before I finally visited another Calgary friend, Quentin, living just an overnight bus ride (less by any other, more expensive mode of transportation) from Paris in the middle of the stunningly Rockies-like Swiss Alps. And if I had been more organized, I might not be leaving France as I expect to next Friday. As we stood on the edge of Lac Leman last Friday morning catching up about the three years that had passed since we met through the Calgary Outdoors Club and discussing the similar activities we could do on an extended Easter weekend, I suddenly realized that maybe I hadn't considered ALL my options before deciding to come home. We talked of snowshoeing, rock-climbing, hiking, even some end-of-season skiing ... read more
