This morning I got up at 3:30 AM so I could get myself checked out and get myself to the subway, so I could get myself to the above ground train, so I could get myself to the airport, so I could get myself to Geneva, Switzerland. Needless to say, I'm pretty tired. But I just couldn't sleep after checking into my new hotel, because this city looks SO awesome. I took about 200 photos of Geneva alone, so I obviously can't put them all on here. But basically the city has a beautiful waterfront (with a water jet that shoots 500 litres of water per second, 140 meters in the air), is surrounded by mountains, and has nice clean old buildings and parks. Accept for the water jet and the old buildings, Geneva actually reminds ... read more

After getting some rest, I went out on the town tonight...looking to get a nice meal and find a cool bar to hang out. I had looked up the top bars (according to google) and so I went off in the general direction that they were in. The Restaurant: I found a restaurant that looked good, lots of people were inside and it seemed nice. I looked at the menu outside and it had all the wine & alcohol listed, plus all the desserts, but at a quick glance I didn't see any main courses. I figured I must have just missed them, as I walked inside. The hostess sat me down at a small table, and I was waiting for quite awhile to get a menu. Finally, the waitress came by, but instead of bringing ... read more

Sunday, March 22: Fribourg - Romon This was my first day on the official camino. After the near disaster with the stamp to collect in the Fribourg Cathedral (the ink was dry) I manage to collect one stamp on the way in small chapel. It was a rather long section of about 30 km but every cm of it worthwile as the way leads along a wonderful countryside over hills and rivers along rivers and from one small but charming chapel to the next. And above all, the weather was wonderfully sunny and reasonably warm. About an hour before I reached Romont I was caught by a couple who were eating biscuits while they were walking. They offered me one, I smiled and declined, telling them that I'd rather have about 2 litres of coke. They ... read more

This will probably be the final entry in this blog. I'm back in Geneva and as it's mid-February the weather's cold. I've enjoyed about a year of summer, with the exception of a few cool days in the Australian and New Zealand spring, so I'll have to get used to it again. It's good to sleep in my own bed again, not in a dormitory bunk bed with half a dozen others in the room with me. It's nice not to have to repack my backpack every couple of days, or wear dirty clothes, although I got used to the dirt. We're talking soiled, not filthy. It's good to find my family and friends. Part of my family, anway. Another part lives in Canada and I need to go and see them soon. Despite this return ... read more

I had another day before my flight from Geneva to Barcelona. I arrived in Geneva a bit before 9am. It was brisk cold...a slight notch up from Annecy. Actually, I got lucky ‘cuz it was the weekend of l’escalade celebration. There were events going on at various places in the city and people were dressed up in the medieval outfit, from kids to elders, on foot and on horses. After covering decent amount of ground and encountering medievals, I sat down for a cup of swiss hot choco, not to be confused with swissmiss. Then grabbed roasted chestnuts on the street for nostalgia. Since I had some time and looked easy enough to catch a bus, I made it to the UN building and the obscure giant 3-legged chair. What’s that about?!?! The evening session of ... read more

Sadly, my traveling adventures are over (for now). I’m already plotting my next trip to Europe. But my last adventure was to Geneva, Switzerland and I absolutely loved it. It was the perfect last trip. I left Thursday with my friend Andrew. Getting to the airport took almost the same amount of time that flying to Geneva did. That is one crazy thing about Europe. You can fly almost anywhere in about 2 hours. It takes double that just to drive to St. Louis! We decided to share one suitcase instead of taking two small backpacks and I was able to over pack for the first time this semester! It felt great. We spent Thursday afternoon getting acquainted with the city. Switzerland has four national languages: German, French, Italian and Romansh. In Geneva, everyone spoke French. ... read more

Geneva, with its population of 300,000 people, is described as the 'City of Protestantism' having adopted the Reformation in 1852. It is the second largest city in Switzerland after Zurich and also the world capital of watch-making. Following the completion of the Marist Higher Education Conference in Salamanca, we were invited to travel to Geneva, in the south west of Switzerland (with its 6.5 million residents), to visit Br Cesar Henriquez and witness his work with the United Nations. Cesar is our Marist representative with Franciscans International. Geneva is situated where the Rhone river leaves Lake Geneva. The Geneva Conventions were signed here. These mainy concern the treatment of wartime non-combatants and prisoneers of war. During our stay we also visited the Headquarters of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and met with Human Rights Officer, ... read more

Travel period: 23 - 26 May 2008 Geneva - situated at Lake Geneva, this is a serene and rather quiet city compared to many other European cities. Having said that, it's the hub of many international organisations, incl. Red Cross International and United Nation. Only half an hour drive from France, this is a French speaking city - a second most important language after German in Switzerland. I took a half day walk around Lake Geneva and to enjoy the view of lovely wineyard surround the lake. I only stayed here for 3 days - with one day going to Charmonix, one of the most popular skii area in France. Of course, the skii season has just finished but I can still see the snow on top of the mountain. ... read more

... read more
