I'm finally in Geneva! I can't believe that spring break 2011 is halfway done. I had no problem getting to the train and on my train this morning. It helped that I did a dry run to the station last night and already had my ticket. I had planned to leave the hostel at 7:30, but ended up leaving at 7:00. Mainly, one of the girls that I was rooming with snores like a lumberjack and at 6am I woke up and couldn't go back to sleep. The joys of time differences...even if it's just an hour. The train ride (8:28-12:18) up to Geneva was beautiful! It didn't even click that I was going through the Alps until I was looking at one of the snow capped mountains. I was just chillin' on a train, riding ... read more

After a quick detour in Evian (see video), we have made it Geneva, Switzerland. We have noticed that Geneva is very commercialized, as compared to Lyon but has beautiful lakefront. The city is small and intimate and very friendly. We have noticed people from Italy, France, Germany, and England. We will be home tomorrow, but had a great trip! See everyone soon.... read more

Three of us were walking home the other night - my friend from Sweden, my friend from Pakistan and me. Why I identify us by our countries will soon become clear. Earlier in the day my friend from Sweden and I had been talking about chaplaincy work and we discovered we both have an interest in prison ministry, but agreed we could not handle hospital chaplaincy. We both find ourselves overcome with nausea and that recoiling, inner tingling feeling at the sight or story of injury, surgery, treatment, or blood. If you get this way, you know what I mean. My friend couldn’t even describe the experience, all he did was cross his arms over his chest as if pulling himself away, tighten his shoulders, wear an expression of discomfort and slight sickness on his face ... read more

No longer do I have to, "wait until the cows come home," I got to see them do it! Parading through the street of the alpine village of Saint-Cergue I watched the cows come down from their summer grazing to their warmer winter abodes. When we first arrived I feared we had missed them because no cows were in sight. The only the sight...and stench was of the brown "muck" that they had trailed behind them down the full length of the road. But no, soon enough another group of them clamored down the hill. Now, this was no ordinary cow herding event. At first I thought someone had stolen Chiquita Banana's headdress...then realized oh no, wait, those are flowers not fruit. We're talking 21/2-3 foot tall floral headdresses crowning the heads of already massive cows. ... read more

I wish I had a machine to capture scent. Capture the sensational aroma of the massive, dazzling white lilies resting along the steps up to the chapel’s altar. One deep breath after another I drank in their intense fragrance finding myself at rest with them. Even now as I relive the moment, each inhale revives the scent in my memory and I am transported back to the tranquil, gray stone chapel once again. A few icons of Jesus and Mary (his mother) decorate the walls—perhaps offensive to some, but even though they are not from my tradition I am not bothered. However, the homunculus Christ image makes me a giggle a little inside because 1) the word homunculus is funny to say and 2) any image of a baby with an adult man’s face ("homunculus Christ") ... read more

Bonjour! Greetings from Switzerland, finally! It has been a week now, though it feels like a month! I have already seen beaucoup (many) sites, met so many amazing people from around the world, and had quite a thorough orientation. Thankfully, our daily 10-12 hour sessions were broken up by three meals, two chapel services, and two coffee breaks. That sounds like a lot of stopping and going, but as fascinating as the orientation sessions were, the breaks never seemed long enough. Thankfully, I found ways to get my own personal “breather” time in during the week. From Bossey I went toward the nearby village of Founex on exploratory walks and adventurous bike rides through rolling vineyards, past luscious apple orchards and almost “as-high-as-an-elephant’s-eye” corn fields. Simply spectacular. Another exciting event occurred on Thursday—I celebrated my 25th ... read more

On the way to the Alps we stopped in at Geneva for an hour to visit the Jet D’Eau which was amazing. We walked out on the jetty to get some pics and had a nice refreshing spray of lake water! The town and lake were quite posh and this was reinforced by the price of a Red Bull at 5E! ... read more

Geneva is really expensive! In economics, you learn about the Big Mac price comparison. When applied here, it is obvious how pricey things are. And they aren’t on the Euro, which makes things complicated as well. Nevertheless, Geneva is a beautiful city that is mostly comprised of business people and international organizations. It was obvious that Geneva was not going to be a great place for students desiring a fun nightlife when we learned that all the stores close at 7 (it feels as if someone hits a switch and the streets are just abandoned at this time) and the place feels like a ghost town after 10. We got there very late and struggled to find a place open to eat at, as we were really hungry. We ended up finding a Spanish place ironically ... read more

On our way out of Geneva, we had two separate visits to the WTO headquarters and the U.N. Both campuses are with 5 minutes of each other and the visits proved to be interesting. As an econ major, the WTO meeting proved to be especially interesting to me. Once getting through security, we met with a Lawyer for the WTO from Ghana in one of the negotiation rooms of which the headquarters is mostly comprised of. It is in these rooms that countries negotiate their different terms of trade and try to work out disputes. He spent a little over an hour with us discussing the purpose and goals of the WTO and the specifics of what went on the headquarters. We also spend a considerable amount of time learning about their strategies toward development and ... read more
