Lukt het niet: app me even. On our last day, we decided to drive the 90 minutes even further north to explore the town of Abisko, one of the best places to see the Northern lights. I will warn you - it was gorgeous. My photos do not do it justice. We left around 9:30 am so we were driving throughout the peak of daylight. Essentially, it is a beautiful blur between sunrise and sunset, incredible colors the whole time. The ride itself was easy and beautiful (despite a bit of GPS confusion in the city of Kiruna and stopping for me to view the expansive mine operations in the distance). We stopped a couple of times for photos, including when we saw the large Lake Tometrask, more mountainous country, trains over bridges, and the snow covered landscape. We also stopped at ... read more

My sisters, their families and I took the 15 hour overnight train to the far north of Sweden: Kiruna, 150 km north of the arctic circle. I was actually quite excited for the train ride (I love trains), but a couple of the adults were a bit nervous (I won't say who). We had booked two cabins, each slept 6 people. The 6 kids all enjoyed some cousin time in their own cabin, while the adults played some bean board game two cabins down. We had asked the middle cabin if they wanted to switch, but they were an incomplete group of strangers. The wine came out and we stated to enjoy our time, but the two families were divided come bed time. I made up most of the beds, climbing to the top bunk and ... read more

A little known, but very fascinating, museum Over the years we have visited many museums of various kinds. We have found that those that cover a very narrow theme often tend to be very good. In the town Älvsbyn we heard of one museum that seemed to fit the profile of covering a narrow theme - namely a petrol museum. That sounded odd but interesting. We decided to visit it. Strictly the museum was not about petrol but rather about various advertising material for petrol stations and oil companies. The items in the museum all come from a private collection. When we arrived the staff, one person only, was about to close the museum for the day. When he saw us coming he explained that he was not able to stay to keep it open for ... read more

Sweden's largest rapid, Sweden's largest ghost town, the world's highest wooden house and the world's largest cheese slicer Something we learnt this summer while travelling in northern Sweden is that although there are plenty of rivers in this country there are not many waterfalls. Instead there are plenty of rapids, and they can be pretty spectacular too. We will start this blog entry by writing about the largest rapid in all of Sweden, Storforsen. Storforsen Storforsen, or the Great Rapid, is not only the largest rapid in Sweden. It would rank pretty high on a list of the greatest rapids in Europe as well. The rapid is untouched by the hydro power industry, as is the entire Pite River which is the river that feeds Storforsen. But Storforsen has sort of been regulated by the logging ... read more

From the TV-shows Monty Python and Survivor to Swedish Cold War military heritage Draisine Last summer we spent half a day riding a draisine on Dellen Railway. We absolutely loved doing that. It was so much fun that we have decided to do this maybe once a year. There are about 30 places in Sweden where it is possible to ride draisine so we won't run out of options for this activity in the near future. This summer we found a company in the tiny hamlet Vitvattnet, about half an hour by car north of Kalix town, which hires draisines for rides on an abandoned section of the Haparanda Line. On hot days there are a few reindeers that seek out the cool temperatures inside ... read more

An igloo in summer, a battle site in a country that has had peace for more than 200 years and a nature reserve to preserve the aftermath of a nature disaster We decided to stay in Sweden during our vacation this summer. We did the same last year and then we mainly travelled in mid Sweden. This year the plan was to go further north than that because, as we will show in this and in coming blog entries, there is plenty to see there as well. Going from Stockholm to north Sweden by car is a fairly long journey. It's longer than we really want to push ourselves to travel in one go. Fortunately we had some things we wanted to see along the way so we could make stops to break the journey. The ... read more

Just tagged my second high point in Scandinavia (first in Iceland way back in 2011), Kebnekaise in Sweden, the name derived from the native Sami Giebmegáisi, i.e., "Cauldron Crest." I don't know about any cauldron on the summit but the weather on the trek was boiling as Sweden is in the midst of its hottest summer in 250 years. Aside from the mountain, I spent 4 days in Stockholm alternating between sightseeing and gorging myself senseless at all you can eat Chinese food and schwanky hotel breakfast buffets partly as a remedy to overcome the worst jet lag I've ever experienced and partly as a matter of economics as going out is expensive here. $US ≈ 8.8 Swedish Kroner (SEK) KebnekaiseObjective numero uno during one month in Scandinavia. The mountain is only 6,886' ASL but the ... read more

Friday 4 August - Lulea to Jokkmokk.... another day of travelling - this time train and bus..... also another fine day with a clear blue sky. The train left at 10am and was fairly empty until we arrived in Boden. Crowds of hikers with large backpacks got off the overnight train from Gothenburg - same train we arrived on yesterday - and got on the train we were on - going as far as Kiruna. We got off at the next stop, a small village called Murjek, where we had a 2 hour wait for the bus to Jokkmokk. There was a restaurant in a no-longer-used Teachers' Training College building just up the road, and we headed there to see what we could find for lunch. Friday's menu was curried chicken and rice or potatoes, and ... read more

Off to Umea....... another fine day, +21 degrees. Our train came at 11am today so a leisurely start. It was a fast train so reached speeds of 200 kph and as there were many tunnels, our ears were popping. Only 2 stops - Kramfors where there was a huge wood processing plant - piles of logs and wood chips. In between the many conifer and birch trees were farms - a few cattle, mainly crops and some paddocks cut for hay. Ornskoldsvik at the top end of the High Coast was the other stop. Train announcements were in both Swedish and English, and the electronic sign in the carriage gave the outside temperature, with the plus sign before the number. I guess in 6 months' time, the sign could well be minus. As in Harnosand, there ... read more
