So, of course, I´m running into some linguistic surprises, and I´d like to start collecting them here for posterity. Some are ironic, some are just ridiculous, and some are phrases you may never hear in Spanish 101. I´ll update it periodically. Keep in mind that several of these come straight from the mouths of babes, as I live with an 11 year old and a 7 year old. Feel free to add others that you´ve come across in the comments section! Joyeria: no, they don´t sell joy, they sell jewellery, but I suppose that to some women, that´s the same thing (remember Adebola?) ¨¡Picale en las pelotas!¨: a phrase I hope never to have to use (I learned it watching the aforementioned Vin Diesel movie). ¨Tengo que hacer caca.¨ thank you for telling me, Pedrito. So yes, I´m working on about 3 hours of sleep. Jet lag and a brain full of stories to tell and experiences to remember and words to practice conjugating will keep a girl up all night. But now that I´ve got a captive audience.... I just had the most fabulous weekend. Friday I was feeling a bit lonely, but, as any girl knows, retail therapy can cure whatever ails you (right, Rob?). After I found this internet cafe on Saturday, I followed my clogs wherever they would take me, and, good shoes that they are, they took me to a Camper shoe store on Gran Vía. Audrey just recently taught me the joys of the Camper shoes. They´ve got a ¨twins¨ line: the shoes are the same, but different. So when I found a pair of ... read more

**I've added in new pics of my trip to Madrid!** http://community.webshots.com/slideshow?ID=548706455&key=DXmFlW (Copy and paste web address!) Hey yall. I hope everyone had a great weekend! I can't tell you how excited I am that everyone at IU is back/coming back from spring break today. I'm looking forward to getting to talk and email with yall soon to hear about how yall are doing! I was in Madrid this weekend for a little over a day. We left Avila early Saturday morning and took the train (about a 1.5 hour train ride) to Madrid. Get ready to be impressed-I packed everything that I needed for the weekend in a small purse. That's all-nada mas. I was very proud of myself because I am not someone who can pack lightly! Madrid is the first big European city I've ... read more

Ah, the sights and sounds of Madrid in springtime. Black plastic origami hats on the guardia civil, women in tight pants tucked into high boots, trees blooming, traffic lights chirping, Madrileños either kissing or smoking. Whispers of Don Quijote on the backs of traffic signs. One I saw yesterday: Yo nací libre, y para poder vivir libre escogí la soledad de los campos (I was born free, and in order to be able to live free, I chose the solitude of the countryside). And it seems like every corner I turn, I see something beautiful. Monuments to everything. Beautiful buildings. Fountains. I had to get over my embarassment at playing the tourist. I finally pulled my camera out and just started snapping. The streets are all named for national heroes, with beautiful but evasive little signs ... read more

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I totally forgot what day it was today. It’s not a big deal here, so I just went through the day like any other. We went to the Palacio Real for Art class today. We had to wait because there were a bunch of groups before us. It must have been Friday fieldtrip day or something because everyone there was in a huge group. It was cool though because I saw some things I was too lazy to look at the first time I was there. I saw the armory, the gardens, and the oldest pharmacy. Or tour guide was such a pest. She skipped half the rooms, and when we went into a room, she only talked for like a minute. She didn’t give us any information. And then, she told ... read more

Another day at school, and another night on the town. It was Amy’s last full night in Madrid, so I told her I would come hang out with her. We met at this place in Bilbao called Casa de Cerveza. When we got there the bouncer wanted to charge us ten bucks each to go in. I told him I wasn’t drinking and he told me it didn’t matter. So Amy came out, pretended we were coming for our birthday and he let us in for five bucks each. Thanks jerk! It was a good thing that Carla decided to come though, otherwise I would have been lonely. Amy was so drunk. She didn’t know what she was doing half the time. She introduced me to her friends so I kind of had other people I ... read more

So between El Escorial and Madrid, there is a huge monument. For my Fascism class, I went to the Valley of the Fallen. It is a HUGE cross in the middle of the mountains that also holds a church and a crypt. The church and the crypt are literally inside the mountain, like a cave. The two most important Fascist leaders in Spain, Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera and Francisco Franco, are buried there, along with many soldiers who died in the Spanish Civil War. I forgot my camera, but I got pictures from my friend Craig.... read more

Today was full of surprises! I had completely forgotten that Bible Study was tonight, so I only came home for fifteen minutes. Sometimes I feel so rude coming and going so much, but she did tell me to have fun while I was here, so that’s what I’m gonna do. So anyway, I met Matt and Meg at my metro stop and we left. We met Nicole and Tribunal and waited for Joe. That little piece never showed up! We waited for like 20 minutes and then just decided to leave. All we had was directions to this place. We started off going he wrong way and had to turn around. We started finding street signs but we were a little confused. We felt like we were in the ghetto! The street the apartment was on ... read more

What a beautiful day today! It was 23 degrees. I really might have to invest in a blanket so I can lie out. I would just lie in the grass, but there are too many cigarette butts and spit and food. I love the SOL! Where have you been all my life silly? You’re my best friend for life. So anyway, I had my first test today. It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, but I know I made a bunch of crazy stupid mistakes. I always do. I just pray that all my studying pays off. Otherwise I’m giving up! Hahaha. In my mind I know Spanish, just not on paper. But I think I did okay. It could have been better, but it could have been a lot worse. I’m not ... read more
