Someone asked me what the people looked like here. Well you know what they all look different but some look like me. I am glad I have olive skin and dark curly hair because that is what alot of people look like here. The babies are some of the cutest I have ever seen. Also the fashion-- it makes Americans look like slobs. haha more to come. ... read more

Hola from Spain! I made it to Spain early Friday morning. It was quite a flight-definatly not an easy one. Our flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was about 8 hours with the worst landing I´ve ever had. It was just a straight shot down. I really thought I was going to throw up. We literally ran through Schiphol in Amsterdam and made it just in time for our Amsterdam to Madrid. We got all of our luggage and made it here smoothly. We were very fortunate to be so lucky! We arrived in Spain at the bus station (right in town, only a short walk to my house) to see a bunch of women waiting for us - our future moms! My mom picked me up with two kisses to my cheeks and is a delightful ... read more

Hola familia y amigos, Things are going better than they did the first day. I was finally able to see my American friends at the orientation yesterday, so I felt better. Plus I got a cell phone too so I called Mom and Rissa, although I’m still trying to figure out the cost of it all, sounds like a bit of a rack up. We walked all through the town and my feet were killing me. It really is true that American’s aren’t very active because all everyone does around here is walk around. The whole schedule of the day is different in Spain compared to the U.S. They eat very little breakfast only coffee con leche (coffee with milk) and some crackers and then a big lunch is at 2 or 3 followed by a ... read more

LA GRANJA DE SAN ILDEFONSO For years I have been reading about the beautiful palaces on the outskirts of the highly popular tourist destination of Segovia. I have been to Segovia, oh, about 700 times, but had never visited La Granja de San Ildefonso. Well, my friend, coworker & private English class students, Aurora, invited me to go with her (in her car...it's been so long that I've travelled in a car that i got car sick!!!). Well, I didn't vomit, but I almost did! We had the day off (yes, another vacation day) last Tuesday to celebrate something in valladolid, es decir, I really don't know why we had off. Doesn't matter, we took advantage. It was one of the best days here that I've had so far! It looked like it was going to rain, ... read more

Kate The first weekend in May we had Thursday and Friday off, and thus a four day weekend. It was the celebrations of the 2nd of May, when the Spanish kicked Napoleon and the French out of Madrid. As it was only our second holiday since we started work in January, we considered visiting another Spanish city- Barcelona or Valencia perhaps. However, there are many places around Madrid that we haven't visited, so instead we decided to stay at home and do a couple of day trips. The first one was to Segovia, a town in nearby Castilla y Leon, about 2 hours from Madrid..... .....allegedly. Kate and Kris's adventure on public transport #2 You will recall from previous blogs that we have some adventures on public transport in Spain. Now, don't get me wrong, public ... read more

We went to Segovia on Monday! Everyone loves Segovia. I've been there several times & every time you go to Segovia the weather is guaranteed to be perfect. It's kind of a magical place. It was especially magical when Erica threw up at the bus station when we arrived! Never take Dramamine on an empty stomach. We visited the Roman Aqueduct, the Cathedral & the Álcazar (castle). The Álcazar is supposedly the model that was used for Disney's version of Cinderella! I think the girls all loved it. I had a blast myself. I don't think you can ever get sick of Segovia. I especially liked the part where we pigged out on pastries! Yummy caracol...... read more

Happy All Saints Day! Today is a national holiday in Spain--All Saints Day. From what I gather it's like the spanish version of memorial day--people go to cemetaries, announcers on the radio talk about famous singers who have died, etc. A lot of impromptu flower stores have popped up in the past week. A few weeks ago (my apologies for the massive delay) was the excursion to La Granja & Real Fábrica de Cristales, both relatively little-known places in comparison with other major attractions that Spain has (such as a Roman aquaduct in Segovia!) and only about 15 min. away by bus. Honestly, there's not much to La Granja (which means "farm")--but don't let that make you think any less of it. It's acutally a summer palace with a huge labrynth of gardens, fountains, and even ... read more

Looks like I’m due for an update. Things have been pretty, well, relaxed as usual. It was nice to come back to my casita here in Segovia after a whirlwind trip to Greece. In Segovia I’ve just been going to school, and talking, talking, talking as much as I can. I’ve met a lot of Spaniards with whom I spend a lot of time chatting in cafés and going out to the bars. Of course I spend time with Iñigo when he comes here or I go to Madrid. At this point I feel like the language is really clicking: I’m using more complex structures, picking up vocabulary, and thinking in Spanish rather than translating. Last weekend I went to La Granja with my program. It’s a little town not far from Segovia that is renowned ... read more

I have a confession. When I signed up for this whole "semester in Spain" thing, I was expecting sun. Lots of sun. I was looking forward to warm(er) winters and a life without needing to use artificial lighting in the daytime. Also, I've always secretly been superstitious about sunny days being good ones while cloudy days aren't. Past experience has proven this to be true for me; my best days are ususally sun-filled and the bad ones cloudy. Thus the reason for Spain. With my logic, Spain = sun. Sun = good days. Therefore, Spain has to mean a whole lot of good days. For the most part, I've been right on. Spain is sunny and every day has been good. Until this week. This week the sun decided to take a vacation, sleep in, boycott, ... read more
