Yesterday (Wednesday) I took a trip out to the historic town of Segovia. I caught the train from Chamartin Station in Madrid and the journey takes only 35 minutes. It was cloudy and very cold on arrival - about 5c at 1030am. The train to Segovia was fantastic, very comfortable and incredibly fast. Once at the train station at Segovia you need to catch the local bus to the centre of the town. They tend to run the buses at the same time as the RENFE trains arrive. The first thing you see when you hit the old town is the Aqueduct, typically the most recognized symbol of Segovia. It was built at the end of 1st to early 2nd century BC by the Romans during their occupation of the Iberian Peninsula to bring water from ... read more

Jasmine came to get me because we had decided yesterday that we could take the 8am bus to Segovia, but she could tell how tired I was, so I did get to sleep for almost another hour or so, and we still made it in time to catch the 9am. The bus wasn’t too bad, but I couldn’t sleep on it like I was hoping, but the trip to Segovia was only 1.5 hours. When we got there, we had no idea where to go to find the “touristy” area, but we knew we both desperately needed coffee before anything, so we walked around looking for a pasteleria. We found a cute little place and all the little desserts looked so good! I finally decided on a napolitian créma (the spelling is probably off, oh well) ... read more

Well, I suppose that I'm doing this a bit backwards as the first city that I'm writing about is Segovia, rather than Madrid, but so far in Madrid I haven't taken any photos or done the touristy things- instead I have just been living here and soaking in the Madrileño life. I almost don't even know what to write about Madrid because I know no words can describe the life, passion, excitement and flavor of this city- as of right now I'm still in a state of wonder and I wouldn't be able to verbalize everything that I would want to say. So anyways - back to Segovia! Segovia is only about an hour and a half from Madrid however the bus ride there makes it seem like you're traveling through a different world. Just outside ... read more

After enjoying some of the great historic sights of Spain, I ended up at probably one of the best known sites, Segovia. This city contains an amazing amount of history and culture. Overall, the experience of Segovia really gave me a true taste of what Spain has to offer. My beginning into Segovia was a bit too adventurous for my taste though. After leaving Avila and making it to the entrance of Segovia, it was getting rather late. My only mission at this worn out point was to find my hotel and gather some much needed sleep. Looking on the map given to me by a hotel, I had only to drive a half a mile and I would be able to sleep in a peaceful hotel that faced the Aqueduct. 2 hours later, I found ... read more

Well this is my very last blog. I cannot believe how much this trip has flown. I hope you all have enjoyed reading about my adventures in Spain. I enjoyed sharing them with you. The next day and half will be spent getting last minute items, packing, and soaking up the sun. Tonight is a goodbye dinner with everyone from school and our host moms. I have learned alot about life and myself on this trip. I had a really great time, and it really was the experience of a lifetime. The other details I will have to share in person. Hasta Luego! See you soon! Nicole ... read more

Oh my gosh…this was my last full weekend here in Spain!!! It just hit me. Time certainly is flying. I’ll be home this Saturday night! Well…pray for my flight for me. And tell all those grandparents around you that are religious to pray for me too. I’ll need all the help I can get (again)! This past week went by sssooo slooow. I think it must have been because I know that the clock is ticking, and I’m leaving soon, and that’s all I can think about! Before I go to bed, I think about packing and saying goodbye. When I wake up and walk to school, I think about actually leaving this place. Everyday now I can’t help but thinking about this coming Saturday! Our professors aren’t letting up though, unfortunately. We’re not even close ... read more

This felt like the longest week ever! I guess my professors realized we’re almost through here and assigned us way too much homework. So during the week, I didn’t do much other than working on papers and relaxing. This weekend though, I had fun. Friday, we had an excursion to el Escorial and Valle de los Caídos. First, el Escorial. This is the biggest building in Spain. It was made in honor of Saint Lorenzo in 1563. Not only is it the biggest building in Spain, but it only took 21 years to build! That’s quite a feat. It is built in a big square with many courtyards in the middle. The shape of the building is of a grill: this Saint who died did so by eating a bad hamburger from the grill. No, I’m ... read more

Buenos Dias, In two more weeks I will be home. This trip has flown and I feel like I have learned so much about a multitude of things. But I can’t wait to get home and see everyone. This past Friday we went on a group excursion to a huge castle which was in a suburb of Madrid. It had the most amazing murals I have ever seen. There was a hallway where the entire thing from wall to ceiling was a mural. It took my breath away. Of course we weren’t able to take pictures. There was another hallway which looked like a tunnel which was made completely out of marble and led down to the crypt of most of the dead kings and queens of Spain. From there we headed to the tomb of ... read more

Hola, I can’t remember if I ever posted pictures of where I am staying. So here are some for your entertainment. I don’t have a picture of my host mom but I will get one before I go home. She has a nice apartment which has a small kitchen, living and dining room combo, 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It is clean too. Some people have houses but others live in apts. like mine and others not as nice as mine. I got lucky, I get along with her really well. My Spanish has improved as a result as well. Tomorrow I have another excursion and Saturday is a big festival. So see you all Monday! Enjoy- Nicole ... read more
