I'M IN PORTUGAL! Yeah, so I arrived here (in the captial, Lisbon...or as it's known here...Lisboa) this morning at 8am. I wanted to purchase my ticket to Salamanca but apparently I can't at this station...it took me an hour to figure that out...so after some café con lech I took the Metro to my hostel. It was really easy to find...and so nice! I was very impressed. It was only 18€/night but there was free breakfast, internet (wifi and computers), very clean, bedding included...but I couldn't check in yet, so I just locked up my luggage there and set out to find out what all I should do. I first got on the old fashion trollie there have there...it reminded me of that trollie in that kids show that I used to love (um...something about neighborhood?) ... read more
So, I had the day off of work because there were too many Practicas workers...so I planned on going to Sol and checking out these monestaries with Virginia...but she didn't show...oh well. So first I headed to this Pasteleria that Bienvenidos told us about...he said to try a napolitiano...so I did, but I had the cream one because I'm not a huge fan of chocolate...and I'm so glad I did!!!! It was AMAZING...it almost reminded me of my kolachi days in College Station with my working buddies on Saturday mornings...good times...and good food! After I left there, I went looking for the Monesterio de las Descalzas...which was actually easy to find when you get the right directions. I decided to go with the English tour at noon, so I had an hour to kill, so I ... read more
10 - 8 - 08 Normal day at work. During lunch we went to see the gorillas...they're so fun...I think my boss is scared of them though...kinda funny...but that male is huge!...and he did get very close to the glass...Then, before I left I asked if anyone knew where the Panteon de Goya, but NOBODY had even heard of it...so Pablo let me use the internet to find out...luckily it's pretty close. So I hopped on the Metro and headed over to find it. I wasn't exactly sure where it was, but I eventually found it...not that great...it probably would have been better if I had someone telling me what I was looking at (my school did a fieldtrip there, but I missed it), but at least I can say I've seen it...and it was free. ... read more
OK, I don't feel like writing a lot, so I'll make this short...the pics are better anyway... ...At work today I did a few new things, I had to "sifonar" this cube tank, where I made a huge mess...water everywhere... Then I helped teach a new Practicas worker some things...good practice for my Spanish...poor guy. Then I watched them feed the sharks in the big tank, but my favorite was the turtle we have, he's so cute. The sharks are such bullies...here he is, just trying to survive...eatting a little fish, and the sharks keep taking it away from him, so he goes and tries to hide in the corner, and he uses his little flippers to help hold the food while he bites it...too cute. Then I thought I ruined an entire tank because I ... read more
Today was just a normal day at work. Jasmine and I agreed to meet up after work and school to go to IKEA and this really big Carrefour (a place just like Wal-Mart!), but first she had to go pay rent at some ladies house or something, so I just went to school to use the internet until she was ready. At school, I booked some hostels for my trip this weekend in Lisbon and Salamanca - the Lisbon ones are really cheap! I was there for awhile, but I didn’t get to talk to Ray, I guess he was busy at work. At around 4 I met Jasmine and Virginia decided to go too. We headed to IKEA on the Metro which is actually pretty far. I’m excited because this is my first time to ... read more
I got to sleep in!!!!..well, until Jasmine decided to wake me up at 11:30. But still, I just bummed around the house until Charo’s son came over for our Sunday lunch. Lunch was pretty good today too…but I just realized that this will be my last lunch with them because the rest of the Sundays I’ll be in different cities. We had some kind of carrot soup (tasted just like that pumpkin soup we had a couple of weeks ago…but very good), tomatoes with cheese in some kind of sauce (and I usually don’t like tomatoes, but I really liked these), chicken balls, and fruit salad. After we talked for awhile, Jasmine and I headed off to Corte Ingles in Sol so that I could buy some more minutes for my phone and we could get ... read more
This morning I woke up and I did not want to get out of bed (it was 5:45), but the thought of Sevilla got me up. I ended up leaving a little later than I wanted I got to the Metro around 6:45. When I got to Atocha, I found a ticket window and stood in line, but when it was my turn, the guy told me I couldn’t buy a ticket to Sevilla from that window, so I just followed a crowd and found another ticket window. I stood in that line, but the guy said something and everyone started leaving, so I went up to ask where I should go…he pointed, but I wasn’t sure where. I started walking and finally found another ticket window…pretty far away…the same ticket area that I bought my ... read more
Today, I went to work and same ‘ol same ‘ol. At lunch I talked to some of my co-workers to ask which cities they would recommend me to go to because I spontaneously decided that I’m going to take a day trip tomorrow. It took me awhile to decide where I wanted to go, but I finally decided on Sevilla because it’s close enough to do in a day, and I’m not sure if I’ll have another chance. I looked up the times, and the earliest train leaves at 7:30, so I’ll have to catch the Metro right when it opens because I haven’t bought my ticket yet. Sometimes being spontaneous is fun! Right after work, I headed to the Plaza de Toros de las Ventas to buy tickets for the show today. It starts at ... read more
Today, I had to work all day since I took yesterday off, but it was so hard getting up! When I made it to work, all the other “practicas” (interns) were new people. After breakfast, I learned how to “sifonar” which is kind of like vacuuming, this one tank. But there’s this eel that is very aggressive! Anytime my brush or suction bottle anywhere near his hole, he could come out and attack it…that’s what I was afraid would happen to me in that other tank the other day! Later, I went to lunch at the cafeteria and then after I got to dive in a different tank with one of the other workers, Aurora. It was pretty cool, a lot of pretty fish everywhere…and nothing dangerous, but there was this one fish that did not ... read more
Jasmine came to get me because we had decided yesterday that we could take the 8am bus to Segovia, but she could tell how tired I was, so I did get to sleep for almost another hour or so, and we still made it in time to catch the 9am. The bus wasn’t too bad, but I couldn’t sleep on it like I was hoping, but the trip to Segovia was only 1.5 hours. When we got there, we had no idea where to go to find the “touristy” area, but we knew we both desperately needed coffee before anything, so we walked around looking for a pasteleria. We found a cute little place and all the little desserts looked so good! I finally decided on a napolitian créma (the spelling is probably off, oh well) ... read more
