We had our ´fancy´dinner last night in a restaraunt that shares the enclosure with the hotel. Its a beautiful restaraunt with a large fireplace in one of the rooms. All of the rooms have high vaulting ceilings with large wooden windows. The windows are especially interesting. All of them have heavy wooden shutters that close from the inside. An iron bar goes from the bottom to the top of the window. When you unlatch the window the bar turns and lifts out of a hole in the stone wall. Anyway, we feasted just like we were back in the 14th century. The meal started with a plate of different pickled items which I think included a quail egg and at least one veg. I didn´t recognize. There was ham, salamis, sausage and of course the customary ... read more

We were up at dawn, actually before dawn since the sun doesn´t come up here in Nov. until after 8 in the morning, and off to the train station. A four and 1-2 hour ride to Madrid and then a miserable hour waiting in the ticket que to get a ticket out to toledo. Toledo is just a quick 30 minutes outside of Madrid and as we approached I was glad we had decided to stay here instead of in the city. Toledo is an amazing medival village purched up on a hillside with a river banking 3/4 of it and a wall around the rest. We took a quick bus to the wall of the city and then walked down a cobblestone path to an opening in a part of the castle wall. There in ... read more

I think it's been over a month since I have published anything. Oops! It's so easy to put this off, especially these past couple of weeks. October 20-24 were midterms, which meant the weekend before all I did was study. Not to mention a few close-to-sleepless nights. It's not that I put my studying off either, it just piles on so quickly! I had two midterms that Monday. One on Tuesday and a paper and a midterm on Thursday. I felt confident on all of them. I knew coming out of both art history exams that I did very well. I got both back this week and I had As on both of them. I got an A on my tower paper too. We had to go around the city and find church towers that are ... read more

Hello Everyone! I hope everything is going well with all of you and that you are enjoying fall (or winter for some of you). We did end up going to El Parque Warner Bros. We had a lot of fun and rode all of the open rides, including the swings and the kiddy rollercoaster. We also saw a live performance of Batman Begins, which ended up being really neat. Some of them went on water rides, but it wasn't very warm outside, so I decided to opt out of that. The following Friday (the 17th) the school had an excursion planned to Alcala de Henares. It is home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe. It's also a very pretty city, just outside of Madrid. The weather was really nice and we had a good ... read more

Oh, so much has happened in these (almost) three weeks. I have gotten into the swing of things, am much better and communicating, and am really enjoying my classes (for the most part, anyway). It's much easier to do homework when you don't have to look up every third word! I have even successfully given two oral presentations. I am completely settled with my family, too. This Sunday, Belen and I are going to bake cookies and dye her hair. She was excited about the cookies because the cookies here are very different, much more like graham crackers. Angelito has attempted to teach me how to play his favorite computer game, and we watch Pokemon together sometimes. Angel and I debate politics and talk sports and about whatever is on the news. Esteban is still shy, ... read more

We made it!! If you had seen the state of the roads then you would know why that is worthy of 2 exclamation marks. We are staying in a very central hotel which is great but that did mean we had to tackle the very narrow roads to get here. They are only just one car wide and that is one small car. Why people bring big cars here I have no idea. Toledo is home of the tour group, and not any old tour group. These ones act like army ants - they engulf and overpower anything in their path! On several occasions while we were relaxing in our favourite square we watched unsuspecting tourists get swallowed by them! Toledo is also home to the best restaurant we have come across. It is called La ... read more

I can't stress enough that the time is just flying by. Tomorrow is my last day of classes for the week! Oh my! My internship has been fabulous. I just finished cataloging my stack of youth artwork. I need to talk to Estrella or Susana on Tuesday to find out what I can do next! I asked Ana, one of the restorationists, some questions today. I got a lot of helpful answers. I watched her work on a painting for a little bit, then I got to go into the restoration room and check out their closet full of art supplies. That cabinet is like my dream come true! Boxes and boxes of crayons, pencils, charcoal, paints...you name it! I am glad that this is what I have decided to do with my life. I ... read more

Sunday, August 24 I was all packed and ready to go. Amy, Ty, Asher, Dan and Anna came to Mom and Dad’s for dinner, and I got to hang out and say my goodbyes to everyone. Surprisingly, there were no tears (at least that I know of) and it was easier than I thought it would be. I stayed up pretty late finishing petty things and reflecting a lot. Monday, August 25 Mom and I left home for Minneapolis at 5:45 am for my 12:15 pm flight. The airlines say to be 3 hours early for international flights, so we were. We had no trouble, though, and just hung out until I had to go through security. The first leg of my flight was to Philadelphia, and then from Philadelphia to Madrid. Tuesday, August 26 I ... read more

After I woke up this morning I went into the kitchen to get some breakfast. My host mom was already starting on lunch, but it's the largest meal of the day and it takes preparation, so I guess that part makes sense. She pointed to a bag on the kitchen table and said that she had picked up some churros this morning and I that I should have some for breakfast with chocolate milk because they go well together. I love churros. For those of you who do not know what they are, it's a long cylindrical strip of fried dough. With cinnamon sugar on top...mmm....Anyways. There were three of them in a bag. I took one because you know, there are 5 other people in the house and I wasn't going to eat all of ... read more

This morning we had to get up early because I was going with Jasmine and her school on an excursion to Toledo. Toledo is the religious capital of Spain. It used to be the political capital too, but for reasons I can’t remember, that changed to Madrid. The reason it remains the religious capital is because back in the time when Catholicism was dominant, and most places were intolerant of any other religion (in Europe), Toledo was. It was the one place that people catholic or not were accepted. Therefore, to this day, there are many churches, cathedrals, synagogs, and mosques. The city was cute. It reminded me of villages in fairytales because the streets were narrow and made out of small stones, the buildings reminded me of cottages, the whole city is surrounded by a ... read more
