One of Spain’s most beautiful towns, Toledo, was our next stop on our way through Spain with our Sparta group. We were there for about 5 hours, enjoying the medieval streets and the great views that this city provides. The town was just completing their large Corupus Christi celebration so we got to see the reminents of that. We went through the cathedral of Toledo which is the 10th largest in the world. There are 80 some churches in Toledo so that is how the phrase ¨Holy Toledo¨was coined. We also got to see some of their famous swords. Some of the worlds best swords are made in Toledo. I did not buy one this time … but some day. (To go with the matador outfit!) After our time in Toledo we made our way through ... read more

Today we made our way to Toledo in air conditioned comfort, which was short lived as the temperature reached 36C today. Despite the heat, it was a most enjoyable and interesting day touring this medieval town that is a UNESCO heritage site. As we approached the city, walking from the station, we saw the remains of the town's walls and gates. We made our way to Tolede Cathedral, and spent the next two hours exploring its many wonders. We could have spend much longer there to appreciate its beauty and history. We even say the processional monstrance, the largest in Christendom, made of silver and gold, containing the smaller monstrance that belonged to Isabella the Catholic. They also had a Corpus Christi procession on the day of the festival. We then explored many of the small ... read more

I checked out of my hostel in Madrid and walked to the train station, not knowing where I´d go next. Tickets were more expensive than I´d expected, so I chose the cheapest trip -- to Toledo. I´ve come on what seems to be one of the busiest days of the year -- the Corpus Chrisi celebration (even though I thought it was on Thursday?). I am staying in a remodeled castle across the river for 13 euros, so I´m pretty content here for a night, despite it being a touristy town. I need rest after late nights in Madrid. I will add more later.... read more

Decided yesterday to eat decadent. Did it in the resto Nina in Madrid. The young waiter, 165 cm at the most, with heavy beard and pink shoes was 21 years old. We had some cultural and language problems. Ordered when I entered a beer, a water, manzanilla and red wine to be sure he could handle the logistic in the right way. Further a meditarian salad and an iberian pig, with french fries. The problems started: Can I ask you what country you come from asked the ayotolla. I told him north of western europe but not too north. Why? He never met somebody ordering manzanilla tea with his salad. I told him we are in Spain. Manzanilla is sherry. Oh that manzanilla. Than he poured one finger manzanilla in my glass. I asked him why ... read more

Pictures from my amazing Spring Break... So my Spring break started out in Granada, a pretty big town! We had just planned a few hours there because we were going to hop the next bus to Nerja-our main destination. We decided to go walk around the gardens of the Alhambra. We had a lot of time so we figured we would just walk it instead of taking the bus that took us right to the entrance. Well, we each had backpacks and we were sharing a small rolly suitcase. We didn't realize how heavy these things would get! Nor did we realize that the walk up to the gardens was ALL completely uphill. So, the walk that takes about 10 minutes going down-hill, took about an hour to go up with all of our things. It ... read more

SO it has been a million days since I last updated and I am Soooo sorry for that! Just thought I would catch everyone up a bit on what is going on right now... Right now I have a week off from school for Semana Santa-Holy week. My friend Katie and I spent the last five days in a small beach town call Nerja on the Mediterranean with absolutely perfect weather...which meant five solid days on the beach. As of today, we are in Malaga-a big city on the coast also- where we are hoping to see Easter processions and whatnot! All in all we have been having a great time. We have survived mainly off of pb&j's, apples, and peanuts with the expeption of a dinner at an italian restaurant and an English breakfast on ... read more

Day 12 (Saturday, April 4th, 2009) After reluctantly waking up, we left the hotel in Cordoba just after 10:00 and began the long drive up to Toledo. It was cloudy out that morning, but we had heard weather reports predicting 70 degrees, so we were hopeful that the sun would find it's way out. Sure enough, about one hour into our drive, the clouds eventually gave way to the sun. About 2 hours and 45 minutes into our drive, we stopped off at a city called Consuegra to see it's famous windmills. Most of Spain's windmills are found in the province of La Mancha, which is located in the central part of the country. It has been said by many that the best examples of these restored windmills can be found in Consuegra, which has ... read more

Wow, it’s been a while since I last wrote…and I have a bunch of things to talk about! Starting out with last Tuesday: There was a dinner with Flamenco dancers and music at the school. It was very fun and entertaining. They pulled people onto the dance floor (No, I didn’t join) which gave us all some good laughs. Friday, before our class visit to the Prado, a friend and I decided to go to Madrid early and walk around and shop. It was really nice to get out of Toledo for the day and be outside. I bought a few things and took some pictures. Madrid is a very neat city, on the one hand, it's just another big city, but on the other hand it is full of history and beautiful sites and parks… ... read more

I was hanging out in my plain little yellow room about a week ago. I was trying to clean up a little bit (Somehow I made a mess of my room in one day) when my cell phone rang. I looked at it and knew that it was my old host mom calling even though it was just a phone number appearing on the caller ID. She was calling to tell me that I didn’t have to worry about anything and that if I ever needed anything to come to them. It was very sweet of her. I feel bad about leaving, but I am so much happier with my new host family. Long story short, my old host brother’s girlfriend was weird, didn’t talk to me, and started taking my stuff and going into my ... read more

I LOVED TOLEDO!! We woke up and got on the bus around 10ish and traveled the hour long ride to Toledo! When we first got there the first thing that impressed me were the rolling hills and the beautiful scenery! Walking out of the bus station we trekked up a steep hill in the cloudy and drizzly weather toward the first puerta that in the old days was the way to get into the city. As we stood just inside la puerta listening to our guide tell us about some history the clouds parted and the sun poked it´s head through! I feared that it was just a tease, but it turned into the most beautiful day! The big fact about Toledo is that it was a village truely inhabited by the three big religions; christianity, ... read more
