Today we took a school trip to Madrid. It was alright. I am not one for big cities, so for me, the trip wasn't that fun (which is interesting since my friends and I are returning there tomorrow morning!). Madrid is about an hour (by bus) north of Toledo. We first went to the Palace Real, which is the castle in which the King and Queen of Spain used live, but now it is pretty much a museum (although they do hold official ceremonies/meetings there still). It was very cool. We could only take pictures of the outside, so that's why there aren't very many. Then we went and had lunch at the Museo de Jamon, which is the Museum of Ham. Oddly enough, we had chicken for lunch :) It was also pretty good. I ... read more

Tonight mi padre showed me how to make tortilla espanola. Now, when most people think of a tortilla, they think of the corn or flour tortillas that are used to wrap up tacos and burritos and such. But that's mainly just Mexico/Latinamerica (as is most of our knowledge of Spanish culture). Well actually, the word tortilla originated in Spain, and it actually means omelette. When the Spainiards came to the New World, they saw the native americans making a flat food and they just called it a tortilla...interesting, huh? In Spain, tortilla espanola is VERY popular; it is a staple of any Spanish diet. It is basically a huge omelette made with eggs, potatoes, and onion, but you can add any "extras" that you want (like peppers, meat, other veggies, etc). There is actually a very ... read more

Yesterday mis amigas y yo wanted to go on a little hike/picnic type thing. So we went and bought food (basically just bread, soda, and fruit) for lunch. But it was REALLY foggy here, and we got sick of waiting for it to clear up, so we decided to take the bus out to the "new" part of the city and go to the mall. This was the first time I have ever ridden a city bus. It was interesting. We got to the mall ok (granted if we would have taken a different number bus we would have been dropped off right at the front doors instead of having to walk like a half a mile). The mall was huge - 3 stories! And they have a movie theatre in there - we really want ... read more

This morning we had a guided tour of Toledo. We started out on a bus, went around the whole outside of the city across the river (the whole city is practically surrounded by a river), which is where some of the "whole city" shots came from. Then, we went on foot for awhile (we went on the biggest escalator I have ever seen...and it is outside!). Then our tour was over and some of my new friends ( :D ) and I went exploring for about 6 hours! We walked all over. We went into la Iglesia de los Jesuitos (a church), and climbed all the way up to the top of the tower (that's where I got some awesome pictures of the cathedral). It was scary, because the stairs were really narrow! But I did ... read more

Thursdays are definitely going to be my hardest days of the week. I only have 2 classes, but they each meet twice (once in the morning and once in the afternoon), so it's really like I have 4 classes. The first class is Arte de Toledo, which I heard from people who have taken it before, that it is amazing. The morning class session we go around Toledo and look at buildings that are examples of the type of art/architecture we are talking about, and then the afternoon class session we discuss what we saw. Today we watched a movie, and I didn't understand any of it. In the morning class, the professor talked nice and slow so I could understand her, and then in the afternoon is seemed like she forgot because she was talking ... read more

Hmm, well my first class went ok. Granted, I only understood about a third of the class. I´m going to have to ask mi madre to help me go through my syllabus so that I make sure I know all the class requirements. The class is spanish grammar and composition (it´s kind of a repeat of a class I took at SNC last year). We have to write 8 large papers, and we have about 10 hours of homework per week (according to the professor). Now I realize why there aren´t any classes on Fridays! My next class is spanish phonetics. It starts at 12:45 and goes until 2pm. Then I am going to go home for lunch and a siesta, then I have to come back for my "Maximizing Study Abroad" class from 7:45 until ... read more

Buenos dias to my friends in Wisconsin (it is 8:30am there and 3:30pm here). I had my 2nd class today. It was Spanish Phonetics (phonetics is basically a fancy name for sounds/pronunciation). I think it went a lot better than my first class, because I was able to understand the professor a lot better. We don't have any written homework (which is nice) but that means all our tests/activities are oral, so I'm really going to have to practice my speaking! Here are some pictures taken from "the tower" at school (the shot of the chairs is looking down on where my first class is...it is in the tower). The view of the city is awesome! ... read more

Here's a little bit about my host family, my house, and spanish life in general so far: Mi madre is from Washington, D.C. so she speaks english (which comes in handy when I am really confused!). She actually went to UW-Madison -- small world, huh?? She is super nice, and she seems to really want to help me do well. Mi padre also speaks english, but he is from spain, so his native language is spanish, and he also speaks french. He seems to be really interested in history; he told me all about the historic importance of Toledo yesterday! Our house is located in el "casco historico" which means the old main city (so it's in the old Toledo, the part that was walled in long ago). It is about a 5 minute walk from ... read more

Hello everyone! I don´t have a whole lot of time to write at the moment, but I just wanted to let you know that I made it to Toledo, and I am at school now, waiting for mi familia to come and pick me up! The flights were so long, it is hard to believe that I left at 8:30 yesterday morning, and now it is 2:15 in the afternoon! My whole body clock is screwed up. I hope my family is nice! And I hope they don´t mind if I want to go straight to bed! Mi estomago me duele mucho (I think because of the stress!), but other than that, I am doing alright. For the OLOL kiddies: On the bus driving from Madrid to Toledo, it seemed like every other building said MUEBLES ... read more

Went to Toledo today with my host and a bunch of other people on CS!!! It was such a nice group! got a very nice guide to guide us around the town. Toledo was the old capital of Spain so there are many nice old buildings and a castle! It was larger than I think and walking around it took a long time! The Sinagoga was very beautiful with a lot of history, the Cathedral was huge and beautiful from the outside BUT, didnt like the idea of paying 8 euros to get in..HAAAA...so I didnt. The alcazar was nice but too bad couldnt get in.....the view around the city was beautiful as well with the river and the green! It was very touristy, but still very beautiful. At night with the Xmas lights, it was ... read more
