The whole residence hall was there because it was hosted by the school of sports science and most of the guys ehre are in that school. It was also conviently located across the street at a bar called "coyote". They served free drinks until 6:30pm so when we arrived around that time, the place was packed! Everyone was in these strange costumes for carneval and many of the guys where dressed as girls like maids or something. It was hizzzzzzzzlarious! I ... read more

hey again! Here are the pics of my dorm room. i would say that it is similar to the dorms in the states however we have hallway from the door to the room which contains two closets that are pretty big and set back in the wall and on the right is a door that leads to the bathroom which we share with the room next to ours. It is cosy and i don't mind it a bit. So here our the pics! Oh yeah the decorations on the wall are made from wrapping paper and the boxes to hold my pens and jewlery were made from a big shoe box I had. The picture frame on my bookcase was also made from that same shoe box. It is amazing what one can do when they ... read more

Hola everybody! Sorry I haven't written very much lately, but I really haven't had much going on! Here's what my life consists of these days: I have classes on Mondays (2), Wednesdays (2) and Thursdays (2, but they each meet twice). I haven't been getting too much homework in any of them (although that will change soon since we have midterms coming up in a couple weeks!), so basically I just get up, go to class, and then spend the rest of the day hanging out with my friends at school. My friends always yell at me because I never seem to have homework (I am taking one less class than all of them since I don't need a full-load). Plus, I tend to not be able to get anything done at school (I do most ... read more

Toledo was considered the religious capital of Spain and Europe during the reign of the Catholic Empire. It was a town in which Christian, Jewish, and Moorish people coexisted; that was until the Spanish Inquisition when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella kicked out or killed anyone who would not convert to Christianty. Our guild told us the real reason for the Inquisition was because the Monarchy had been borrowing money from the Jewish and Moorish people and did not want to pay back their debts; plus the Catholic leadership was pressuring the Monarchy to become a Catholic state. Toledo was also the town in which the famous painter El Greco lived. We saw what is considered his famous masterpiece: The Burial of Count Orgaz. The story goes that El Greco did not consider the painting his ... read more

Well, like I mentioned before, the time has come where I really don't have much to write about anymore...things are kind of settling down here, so I've been getting into the flow of going to class, doing homework, spending time with mi familia, etc. This weekend is Carnaval in Spain. Carnaval is like a version of Mardi Gras. Everyone dresses up in costumes, there is a big parade, and parties in the streets. The biggest Carnaval celebration is in Brazil, but here in Toledo we still have quite the celebration (so I've heard). My friends and I are planning to go to the parade on Saturday, so I can let you know how it is. I am also planning on doing more traveling within Spain. My friends and I want to take little day trips to ... read more

Well, today was a big day. My friends and I got up very early (8am) to catch the bus to the AVE station in Toledo (the AVE is a high speed train that runs from Toledo to Madrid). It was my first time riding a train! We got to Madrid for our second day of exploring. First, we went to the Prado Museum, which is HUGE. We were there for about 3 hours (there are so many paintings and sculptures, but I only recognized 2). Then, we walked to the Puerta del Sol where we ate lunch (just so you know, if you eat at a restaurant, you have to ask for your bill, they won't just give it to you because they don't want you to feel rushed). Then, we had dessert at Ben & ... read more

I tried to write this yesterday, but Houston had a problem, so here we go... We arrived in Toledo three days ago, and we just got back to Madrid. A quick lunch of fried anchovies and ham on baguette and we´re off to a contemporary art museum. But back to beautiful Toledo... We arrived around 10 am, and the hillside olive groves were still clinging to the morning fog. Exiting the Moorish inspired train station, we realized we had no idea where we were! So, we did what we always do, and just started walking in what seemed like the right direction (after a cafe con leche of course, the man next to us at the counter was having his midmorning cigarette, beer, and shot of clear liquor!) We rounded a bend and saw the city ... read more

After our little day trip to El Escorial and Valle de los Caidos, we had a 5 hour bus ride to TOLEDO!! I most definitely slept for that whole thing too. When we arrived in Toledo, we were all awestruck. Toledo is absolutely the most gorgeous place I have yet to see in my life! We were let out of the bus at the top of the hill, before going down onto the peninsula of Toledo to take pictures. It was amazing. But then came the hard part. We drove down the hill and to the billion year old bridge that crosses over to Toledo. The bus driver then informed us that the buses couldn't "fit" in the streets of Toledo and thus we had to walk....with our suitcases. Our leader, Christian, said that it would ... read more
