Bled and the Triglav National Park Slovenia 17 to 19 July 2013 After the car was serviced in Ljubljana (we have done 9,800 kms in 67 days) we drove along the A2 NW to Bled. This is holiday town is nestled next to Lake Bled and is as pretty as a picture. It has an island in the middle of the Lake and perched on a big cliff is the Bled Castle. We drove to Camping Bled and the foreshore of the Lake was PACKED! We found a spot and set up our Camper – awning out, windows opened, table and chairs out, bikes taken off, microwave set up, and, depending on the time of the day and how hot it is, open our local beer. We have got into the practice of putting one can ... read more

Dober Dan/Bog/Ciao J After several lush sunny days by the pool in Ravenna we drove away from the beautiful sunshine and into torrential rain in Venice! The campsite we ended up at was fab, just a 15 minute bus ride from Venice and full of backpackers from places like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America. We had a couple of amusing nights at the bar with them, us unashamedly ignoring the skinny 40 something drunken ex-pat who kept shouting ‘I’m FROM Europe’ and starting fights with 20 year old guys from Australia. I’ve never really come across anyone when they’re actually back packing before though several friends have gone and I’ve always been quite jealous and thought it sounded fun. I always assumed two things however; one is that they actually had backpacks and not wheely ... read more

Nearly a week of our travels have gone and Suzy finds herself at rest in Camping Bled for another day. We have a spacious site and the site is only partially filled but then it is still early in the season and the visitors few and far between. Some Brits turned up opposite us but as they are in convoy with another set of Brits we did nothing more than say hello to them all. Polish Bikers arrived on their growling sit up and beg bikes and set up their noisy camp further up from us. Birds sang and we were woken by the sound of woodpeckers in the trees and cuckoos calling out to each other. Mistletoe clung to the trees. Alongside the campsite was a dried up stream which in winter would have been ... read more

Today we finally arrived at Lake Bled and Suzy is sitting on Camping Bled in Slovenia. We arrived at Bled town after driving down some very narrow and potholed roads along the way . The road looked more like patchwork with patches of black tarmac repairs filling in all the holes. We couldn’t believe we were on a main road and wondered what the B roads looked like if this was the equivalent of an A road. Not much European money being spent in this part of the world. The twisty road was wide enough for Suzy and it made for an interesting route. We passed through the picturesque national park which is popular with walkers and serious hikers and passed by tiny villages along the way. Strange drying racks lined the fields and large bright ... read more

We took a break from skiing in Rauris and headed south into Slovenia. The roads were clear and so we took the back blocks. Without really planning it, we ended up a dead-end valley where the only path through the mountains was via a rail motor. The car was loaded onto a carriage and passengers off-loaded into carriages. Great scenary, though I was constantly concerned whether I had secured the handbrake. My imagination ran wild, and of course all was fine. Into Slovenia through the frontier, and somehow we missed the instruction that said get a permit to drive on the roads. Careering confidently down the highway towards Bled, our car was joined by two quasi-military looking vans. They followed us for perhaps a kilometer when they turned on the persuit lights and directed me into ... read more

Before my trip to Europe, I was wondering which countries to visit. I had no clue what should I expect from any of them, so it wasn’t the easiest task to complete my vacation plan. One of the first countries that crossed my radar was Slovenia, which was then completely unknown to me. But hey, this trip was meant to be spontaneous, unplanned and fun, so I decided almost instantly, that my first destination in Europe will be Slovenia. I don’t regret that decision now, in fact, I’m sure I’ll visit those beautiful places again! I guess I like Slovenia because it’s not very different from New Zealand. It’s small and green, just the way I like it. Besides, Slovenia has so many gorgeous attractions, and they’re all so close together, perfect place for a visit! ... read more

We had a choice this morning of either going to the neighbouring lake area to view a waterfall or go back early to Ljubljana. We chose the later as the boys were keen to ride abound the city on bikes. To that end we zoomed down the motorway at 130km/hr and were back in town by lunchtime. We returned the car to the ATET office and got a taxi ( a BMW which impressed Dion) to our new hotel called the Adora. This came with rave reviews on the Internet and so we were interested to see if lived up to its hype. It was on the southern side of the river and very near the Ljubljana castle. It was quite small with only a dozen rooms. It was run by a young staff and very ... read more

Just to the north of our village is Vitner Gorge. The river is probably 40 metres from the top of the gorge and there is a walkway that criss-crosses the river. The spray from the cascading water filled the air. The walk went for about 2 kms. The water was extremely clear and quite a few fish could be seen. Bled is only about 35 minutes from Austria. It was too good an opportunity not to cross the border for the boys. So after returning to the entrance to the gorge we drove drove on a country road north to the motorway that runs from Ljubljana into Austria. The motorway itself is a two lane each way dual carriageway with a 130km/hr speed limit. It has a 7km tunnel under the mountains which pops out into ... read more

This morning we had a great breakfast at the City Hotel. It was typical Central European fare which included beet root juice, salamis and sausage. We then got a taxi to one of the northern suburbs of Ljubljana to the office of the local ADET hire car company. It's rates were much cheaper than the big companies and the car is a new Skoda hatchback. After heading back to pick our luggage we drove out towards Lake Bled. Dion navigated using his Google maps on his Galaxy tablet. The trip to Lake Bled can only take about 40 minutes so we took the scenic route to our destination. We stopped for lunch at the medieval town of Skofja Loka. It has a fast flowing river passing through it with a number of narrow footbridges traversing the gorge. ... read more

Bohemian Adventure, but a shady beginning. I woke up feeling like death warmed up, realised I had absolutely no recollection of anything of my previous night on the Split pub crawl and wondered how I had gotten back to the hostel. As I began to get ready, tried to shower and began to feel worse and worse, I decided to wake my roomies to find out what happened. We went to the first venue, had 2/3 drinks and got a free t-shirt which I tied to my bag. That is the last thing I remember, I can recall nothing of what happened next. According to my roomies when I asked them in the morning, it then got weird. I was suddenly paralytic drunk, couldn't walk or talk straight and only barely made it to the next ... read more
