http://www.heygo.com 2nd March - Bled Island What a beautiful day to take the boat across to Bled Island on our virtual tour today. We took the traditional traditional boat called pletna. Pletna boats are made by locals and are typical of Bled. Their origins date back to 1590. The colourful awning protects passengers from the sun and other weather conditions but today with clear blue skies & a cool March temperature it was so special to be able to take the short journey with just the boatman and Neza our guide. As we set off Neza sang a local folk song. To be an oarsman is quite an esteemed vocation that cannot be done by anyone. During the reign of Maria Theresa the ownership rights for pletna boats were given to farmers who received poorer land ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 9th February - Bled - Slovenia Another visit to Lake Bled, today we are walking along the lakeside pathway to St.Martin’s Parish church. Bled consists of 5 villages so there is no Central Square. As we walked along the pathway Neza, our guide told stories how she swims in the lake most days in the summer months, the rowing competitions that take place along the canoe corridor on the lake and details of the lake itself. The lake’s deepest point is 30 m and its average annual temperature is 12 °C, reaching up to 25 ° C in July. there are several species of predator fish swimming in the lake and amongst them, some really old, big, giant fish. We heard about Max, a Catfish of more than 8 feet in length but sadly it ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 6th February - Lake Bled Lake Bled - Slovenia The lake is 34 miles from the capital city Ljubljana, we visited Bled on one our cruise holidays back in 2016 when the sky and lake were a different colour to the grey skies today but it was so interesting learn more about the Lake from virtual guide Neza. This was her first tour but it sounds as if she has more plans including hopefully a trip to the small island that we could see. The lake is a Glacial lake that surrounds Bled Island. The island has several buildings, the main one being the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary built in its current form near the end of the 17th century. The church has a tower and there is a Baroque stairway ... read more

We awoke to a rather chilly morning in Kranjska Gora; our windscreen was covered in ice! After defrosting the windscreen / washing the ice away we set off towards Vintgar Gorge. The drive to Vintgar Gorge took about 40 minutes. After leaving the freeway and driving uphill for a while we ended up on a narrow road, which seems to be typical of the approach to tourist attractions in Slovenia! Eventually we reached the car park, paid our 5 euro parking fee and headed off to buy our 11 euro per person tickets for the Gorge. Vintgar Gorge is a 1.6km long gorge close to Bled. It’s one of the more popular tourist attractions in Slovenia, for good reason. We’d read that it gets really busy so to arrive early, but assumed that was only during ... read more

Day 32 : Monday 7 October 2019 : Lake Bled Glad we bought those jackets, its very cool! Took a walk around the whole Lake and hiked up to Mala Osojnica (or maybe Ojstrica). Met a lovely Victorian couple and did the walk with them. We all got lost, but made it in the end. Great walk, bit slippery, awesome views. Next stop, rowing a Pletna boat (€20) to the island, well Graham did, Ella tried (we could’ve been a while) and then our hero rower was Kirsten. Kirsten wasn’t very good at it ? Got to the other end of the lake and was so hungry, but there wasn’t really anywhere to eat. So we upped the pace and kept on our route, all the way around, past the castle, back into town to have ... read more

Day 31 : Sunday 6 October 2019 : San Candido to Lake Bled We’re sad to leave this beautiful countryside but it’s time to make our way to Lake Bled, Slovenia. Had our own carriage in the train, felt like Harry Potter. This is the first time we’ve had to take a taxi (€18) from the train to our accommodation, but it was easier and so much quicker. Accommodation wasn't as great as some of the amazing places we have stayed, still clean and neat. Took a walk into town and around the Lake to the Castle Bled. Lovely castle (€11 pp). Stunning views. Nice place. Bought some pasta and had dinner in. Booking.com Apartments Maja €75 pn. Walked 9kms or 15000 steps and 47 floors. CC €23 Cash €368 (inc €350 cash to accomm)... read more

"Standing placidly in the shadows of the Julian Alps, ringed by thick forests and guarded by a stern medieval castle, is Slovenia’s beloved Lake Bled. At its center is Bled Island, home to one most beautiful churches on the planet and the “wishing bell,” a 16th century chime consecrated by the Pope himself that is believed to grant the wishes of all who ring it." On Thursday, we took a bus to Lake Bled, where the quintessential Slovenian photo of the church on the island in a lake is taken...It was still cool in the morning, and the sun started to come out just after we arrived. We decided to walk around the lake on the 6 kilometer path and opted not to hike up to castle. Part way around, we came to the Olympic Rowing ... read more

Best sleep of the holiday:check, first cup of proper tea in a week :check, opening the lounge curtains and seeing lake Bled:check cuddling Seth on the sofa for an hour looking out into the lake:check. I'm definitely going to cry when we leave here! The morning yesterday was time for a ride on the tourist train to bled Town (it goes right past the door, I cannot over emphasise how much this is the best apartment in the world) and a trip first, to pub bled! More great views (totally unappreciated by Seth who decided pretending to be Dr elephant the dentist from Peppa with a leaflet as a mask was a far better way to spend the time) and a light snack and drink and then an explore. Despite having visited pub bleds toilets twice ... read more

Nuremburg seems about 3 weeks ago. It should have been a 4 hour journey to Salzburg with a nice 2 hour stop in a lovely park for a picnic, getting to our tyrolean home for a nice early tea, a wander round and early bed. Nice. Instead we had our annual 'this should take four hours but will actually take 10' journey . It was 8 hours on the road with a couple of half hour stops (still at the lovely park mind you) and some of southern germany's finest villages, dirt roads and farm tracks. Seth proved himself again to be a very able traveller with no complaining, no grumpiness and perfect cheeriness the whole time. When we finally cleared the closed road and got back on the autobahn, it was time for a stop. ... read more

Warum also jetzt? Vier ... read more
