Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? Parked up on Camping Bled wondering why the price of this campsite has risen from 15 euros and a few cents to over 34 euros in 6 years. That is inflation taken to a ridiculous degree. My comments written in their welcome book suggested that the campfees were rather over the top for what was just a bog basic campsite. I feel it probably fell on deaf ears. Haviz some eastern philosopher said " If you are not travelling and on the road how can you call yourself a guide" Well today I shall do my best to be your guide and give you an insight into a day on the road in a motorhome on a journey which took us out of Germany , into Austria and ... read more

Today we are going to Lake Bled. I have been looking forward to this because I’ve heard it’s really beautiful, although my daughters have counselled against swimming, due to the enormous fish. It’s 4 degrees, so swimming isn’t featuring in our plans. It’s not until we leave the hostel in Ljubljana that we realise how foggy it is. However, as we head north towards the Julian Alps, the fog lifts and the sun appears. First stop is Vintgar Gorge; a gorge with a river running through it. You can walk along a 1600m boardwalk which follows the gorge, crossing the river several times for great views of the rapids and waterfalls. Then we continue to Bled. It’s warmed up somewhat by now, so I stop moaning about not having packed gloves and even shed one of ... read more

Monday, May 28 Today we left beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park and traveled to Opatija, which is on the coast of northern Croatia. While on the route our tour guide, Branko, pointed out an island called Krk. Someone on the bus asked him if he wanted to buy a vowel. Missing vowels everywhere! I've noticed the architecture of the buildings has changed alot and looks more Austrian. Opatija is a cute, small coastal town and was and still is the vacation spot for wealthy Eastern Europeans. I walked the waterfront promenade, Lungomare, and soon our group was on it's way to Slovenia. The border crossing into Slovenia was uneventful & this time I did get a stamp in my passport (did not get one in Montenegro), and we traveled to Postojina (poh-STOY-nah) Caves. Since the whole ... read more

This morning we woke up to an overnight dusting of snow on the high mountains surrounding Lake Bled. We can see the snow capped mountains from one of our two panoramic balconies. The day is overcast, but at least it is not raining. After breakfast in our apartment, we commenced walking around the lake with Liz and Darrol, and settled on a Gondola Type Boat Ride out to Bled Island. The young guy rowing the boat (which had around ten passengers) had a relatively easy run out to the island, where he waited for forty minutes to allow us time to explore the island. We settled in for coffee and cake in the coffee shop, and then took some quick photos before rejoining the boat for the row back to shore. By then, however, a strong ... read more

The predicted rain for today eventuated, and rather than sit in our apartment and mope, we donned our raincoats, warm gear and hiking boots, and headed for Vintgar Gorge. The gorge lies four kms north west of Bled, is 1.6 kms long and was carved out by the Radovna River. The sheer canyon walls are 50 to 100 mtrs high, whilst the river has many rapids and whirlpools as it gushes through the canyon. With the rain fall over the past few days, the river was really pumping, sending mist up into the gorge. At the end of the gorge is the majestic 13 mtr Sum Falls (literally, 'noisy falls'), the largest river waterfall in Slovenia. In 1893 the gorge was equipped with wooden observation walkways and bridges, and was opened to the public on August ... read more

We reluctantly checked out from our Grobisce accommodation, after enjoying a generous farm stay breakfast. We headed for our next accommodation at Lake Bled, but seeing a sign for a medieval town and castle along the way, we took a detour and headed up towards the mountains to Skofja Loka. Skofja Loka was first mentioned in 973 as Lonca, when the lordship of the town was granted by Emperor Otto II to the Bishops of Freising. For the next one thousand years, the history of the town was tied to that of the distant ecclesiastical principality, and a castle and tower were built above the town for defence purposes, which later became the residence of the bishop's governor. Škofja Loka was walled in the 14th century. In 1476 the town was attacked by the Ottomans. Lutheranism ... read more

Having completed the walk we drove over the mountain scenic road that was super popular with cyclists and motor bikers, the views were not so special after our hike! Stayed for two nights in the town of Jessince which is near Lake Bled, on the other side of the Julian Alps. Spent a day driving and taking short walks around the area, starting with Vintgar Gorge and ending at Lake Bled. We had read that Vintgar Gorge was super touristy to the point of making a visit unpleasant. We arrived just before it opened at 8am and went straight in, the first people there, and for the hour or so it took us to walk the short 1.6km board walk from the entrance to the waterfall at the end we hardly saw anyone. It was very ... read more

Buoyed by BledWell it's been a while. I haven't stopped traveling, and in all honesty I haven't stopped writing either. But I've been pretty bad at posting updates here. After a while there were been enough trips that the backlog rather became its own excuse etc. etc. oh good gods look at the pile etc. etc. eldritch horrors etc. etc. In early 2017, I like to think I had turned a corner on the previous year. My employers seemed to think so, and I was bundled off to a meeting of the International Whaling Commission's Scientific Committee. Dan, you may ask, aren't you a policy guy? Do you know how to science? Why, no hypothetical blog reader, I really don't. Yet if the past five years have taught me anything, it's that science and policy could ... read more
