We're currently in Irkutsk, Russia having left Hong Kong, flying through Beijing to Ulan Bator, taking a 5 day horse trek in Terelj National Park, back to UB, and then on the train to Russia. Tomorrow we leave Irkutsk for Yekaterinburg. It's 2 nights/3 days away on the train, we'll spend a long day, and then we're on to Moscow, another day or so away. We've had a problem with time and internet recently. When we have a lot of it (like on a train), there is no internet. When we have internet access, there is much else we'd like to be doing too. We'll back fill with stories and pictures at some point. Stay tuned, but not too closely, it might be awhile... --Eric... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Lake Baikal September 28th 2008

Ohhh sooo tired. I am sure if we had the choice - Tim and I would have spent the day in bed. But as always - check out time is in 15 minutes and today is probably the only chance we'll ever have to see the world's largest lake - Lake Baikal. We made it to the drab and dingy bus station, and knowing full well that we had already missed the 8am and 9am bus, we attempted a cab ride, which some out of date blogs told us would only cost $15-$25. Inflation hits this place hard - as the best we got was 1100 R - ONE WAY (about $50.00) - so "NYET" to that. Armed with the town LYSTVYANKA written in Cyrillic in a scrap of paper, I braved the ticket office, and ... read more

We arrive in Siberia at 6am, pitch black and cold. After 4 days with our cabin friends we say good bye - wish them luck and wonder if we'll ever see them again. Get picked up from our tour agent and get taken to Hotel Anagara. According to the guide books this hotel is one of the most upmarket and classy in Irkutsk. Inside the reality is more Gulag in style, a truly Soviet building with (I'd like to believe) is a State Radio hanging in the corner of the room - with only 4 stations (none of them working). The bathroom and shower is an all on one design, like you'd imagine a prison cell to be. The 3rd floor restaurant where we head for breakfast is drab and happiness-less. Breakfast is some very sad ... read more

Still in our Siberian Time Warp. I have woken up at 6.50am / 10.50am and it is a beautiful day. My scary Russian friend (with the scar) tells me that the next stop is "BIG CITY" - which I think is KRASNOYARSKY. Feeling very hungry. Have been reading a book about China and I am craving something hot and spicy. The most exciting herb they seem to use in Russia is Dill. Breakfast is Chloe's Coffee Creation, stale bread, cheese and a pastry with potato. Tasted okay with the free tomato sauce the train lady gave us. Lots more villages today, all wooden, weather worn houses, most with cute blue or green shutters and many with blue tin roofs. Mostly industrial towns with loads of brick chimneys and timber yards. The 'cities' are a mix of ... read more

Tried to hide Tim in an empty cabin last night because of his incessant snoring. Holiday ended when at 4am the train stopped somewhere in the middle of no where and our cabin was occupied by a very confused woman demanding her bed back. Breakfast was a peasant affair of stale bread, delicious cheese and my own coffee recipe of instant coffee and condensed milk syrup. Suffering from the 'Trans Siberian Time Warp' - all of the trains run to Moscow time, but in reality we should be 3 hours ahead. So while it is 9.30am Moscow time (and the perfect time for breakfast) it is really 12.30noon out here in Siberia. We decide to stick to Moscow time. Market sellers board the train today selling woolen scarves and socks. "Nyet" to that we say. Outside ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Irkutsk September 23rd 2008

Just a brief update: Had a lovely day in Moscow before boarding the plane for Irkutsk. Just as you might have imagined my airport (and i use that word with difficulty) pick up didn't arrive when i got to Irkutsk and nor did my hostel pick up the next day. The moral of the story is don't rely on others! The tour giude eventually phoned 3 hours late and arranged for me to be picked up at 1pm to join the gruop who were now an hour away in Listvanyenska. There is very little there but we had a nice few days, it does have an amazing view across the water to an endless line of white peaks. I have a wonderfully chesty cough, swollen tonsils (yes I did check them myself mum!) and as of ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Lake Baikal September 23rd 2008

We are in Irkust now, more than half way through our Trans-Siberian journey. Train life is great. We are catching another train tonight to Ulan Bator. Over the past 4 nights we have played lots of cards, lost and won loads of small money and drank some vodka - of course. The cabins are 4-berth and quite spacious, although we all needed a shower! Stopping at stations is a lot of fun. We can get off for 15 minutes or so and buy some goodies from the old ladies who come down to meet the train. We are getting more and more adventurous with the food we are trying, which will undoubtedly lead to food poisoning! We visited lake Baikal for two days. It was beautiful there, the largest fresh water lake in the world. I ... read more

As in the previous post I’m writing not in the place I am writing about, I’m now in Ulan Ude (see map) and so most of this is my journal edited…tripped out a little in this space and time so please expect stories that have been markedly marked with crayons… Thursday 07/08/08 So as you can see from the previous pic (Note: I’m talking to myself here and about the Lake Baikal sketch that is on the previous page - see pics when I can upload) I am at Lake Baikal and have only now written…why? Maybe I have too much to say - my mind here has been so alive that I’ve really had no opportunity to sit down, stop thinking and write - the reason now really is to chart this glorious time ... read more

Europe » Russia » Siberia » Krasnoyarsk September 1st 2008

Hello all, We've arrived in Krasnoyarsk yesterday. Having spent the night in a very dodgy location, we have relocated to a nice hotel today and explored town. We are leaving for Yekaterinburg tomorrow. As some of you will know I lived in Moscow for 5 months back in 1995 and have been to Russia twice before that spending three weeks at a time in Kirov (Vyatka as it is now known) to do a summer course. The stories are coming back slowly and am managing to bore Vicky to death with them. My Russian is very rusty - during our trip to Krasnoyarsk we shared our cabin with a Russian; to his credit he kept trying and we managed a conversation between my Russian, his rusty English and sign language from all three of us. Having ... read more

Hi everyone! I know this is quite delayed but I thought we better finish off this blog properly, even though we've been back in Oz for 3 weeks. terrible! I was so keen to do this for the first part of the trip. But as time went by and we found ourselves in more and more remote places, you just sort of loose the need or desire to keep in touch with the world back home. The feeling of isolation is great and things like the internet just loose their appeal. Anyway, here are some photos from kazakhstan and siberia, the next part after our last lot of photos.
