So yes this a re-write as my first seemed a little too disconnected with the source as I wrote it after the happening of the journey - so I will in fact now re-write my journal entries instead to try and give you all the effect, I desire, of this journey on me. Note it is in present because it was written in the present but of course it all happened in the past I think!?! 26/07/08 Saturday The facts for the train from Moscow to Irkutsk Time - 80 hours Distance - 5175km Cost - 3600 roubles (100 euros) Class - Plastkartny (third class open bed sleeping carriage) Provisions for the body - 600 roubles (16ish euros) of lovely long lasting, so processed, food (see pic) Provisions for the mind - Books, tea and chocolate ... read more

Today we visited Ivolgin Datsan, a budhist monastery some 30 km from Ulan Ude. There are few temples and budhist monks. Yes, budhist. It is some community of indigenous "buryats" who are leaving in this region, basically the mongol people. It was nice. First time we saw something like that. We met also 3 people from Czech rep. . 2 ladies, 1 man. All of them about 70 years old and also travelling by trains through Russia ! And also by "marshrutkas", which are the minibuses. You just wave your hand, and if there is some place left, the driver will stop. (it is for some 10 people). Cheap, very fast, very frequent. No timetables needed. We read about the war in Georgia. There is some higher police presence in the streets. Even in the restaurant, ... read more

We spent few days on Olchon island. We took a bus there. It was raining all the time that day, and unfortunately in the bus too :) There one lady had an umbrella, one other was sitting in the raincoat .... First night we spent in one shelter, with other 3 Slovak guys we met. They are travelling from Kyrgyzstan (through Kazachstan) and they plan to go to Kamchatka. The island is very beautiful, I mean the landscape, cliffs, lake itself. Otherwise the tourism just starts to boom, since 2 years they have electricity. The few villages there still do not have any roads with solid surface. So you can imagine how it looked like after heavy rains. But people there have good "off road" cars - UAZ. Russian car. I doubt some other car would ... read more

we are just sitting in a very modern internet "kafe" - 21 inches LCD monitors, fast connection, card readers, super headsets ... and 1 min is 1 RUB (and it was told to us even in english !! :) Ulan Ude is in general much more "civilized" than Irkutsk. Although it is smaller than Irkutsk, this is the 4th internet kafe we have seen, while in Irkutsk there was just one (and perfectly hidden). And also the city is more clear etc. And finally fine prices. Nice meal in a fast food (chicken, rice, juice) - about 2.50 euro. Traditional drink on the street "kvas" - 0.30 euro/0.5l. Here there is also a large community of Mongolian people. Seems that most of the population. There is even a Irish pub ! And Italian restaurant. And one ... read more

From Olchon island we came back to Irkutsk, got tickets to Ulan Ude. Traveling all night. We found a hotel. The old socialist style. It was cheap. Now we know why. You have to pay even for the shower something extra - 40 RUB. Therefore I would not call it a hotel, but well ....... read more

(Location: Barnaul, Russia) My travels got off to a slow start. Lufthansa canceled my flight and I was told I probably wasn’t leaving until the next day. It reminded me of a spin off of a Jeff Foxworthy joke: If you’re flight is canceled because workers are on strike, you might be a Euro, or at least dealing with them. Leaving the next day was especially ironic given that my mother in-law (still weird to say) mistakenly booked me for the next day and we paid lots of money to reschedule my flight. Needless to say I hung around long enough, asked enough questions, and talked to enough people and was eventually able to find a flight to Moscow the same day. A few observations: -Weather: The weather so far has been perfect, sunny, no rain ... read more

(pictures will be posted later) I thoroughly enjoyed our Russian ceremony and reception, although admittedly, preparing for it may not have always been bliss. The idea of a wedding is pretty much the same in any countries so I won't go on and on about first we did this, then we did that, next we did that...but instead I'll elaborate on a few of the peculiarities. The Bride: First off, I must say my bride-to-be was really stunning. There's something so beautiful about a woman all beautified (to use her words), in a white dress, and flush with attention, but when it's your bride to be, I can now say from first hand experience it does set you back a step or two. Wedding Palaces: In Russia you can be wed in a church or a ... read more
