so we got on the train and we were greeted by a tiny cabin with 2 bunkbeds and a local named anton - it / he looked like something out of an old war movie but within minutes we settled in and made it our home for the next 3 and half days...the facilities were basic to say the least we had a tiny bathroom with toilet and sink no shower and the catering consisted of a tank with hot water - if you want to lose weight and do no excercise we recommend the cup a soup diet... so how did we keep ourselves amused on the train for 76 hours - lots of sleeping trying to communicate with the locals using sign language picture dictionary, thinking of ways to make our meals more interesting / ... read more

And now to Russia. After a 30hour train journey (where the high points included yet wnother game of scrabble and an interesting tinned peach eating episode-(see pictures) we arrived in Irkusk, a town bordering Lake Baikal. Not only the worlds biggest lake (the distance from end to end is the same as that from Moscow to St Petersburg) but one which houses thousands of species, 75% of which are idiginous to the lake. On arrival we were introduced to our host family and settled in Isbah where we would be staying for the following 3 days. Our lovely russian guide then took us on a walk up a mountain (hugly steep and a struggle to our muscles which had just about dies from lack of movement whilst on the trains) There were police and army barring ... read more

After getting off the train and saying our goodbyes to Julia, we met Costa (21), our next honcho for Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. We immediately got a transfer to a small town by the lake called Listvyanka and pulled up outside our next accomodation - an amazing wooden chalet with a fantastic view of the lake. After a bite to eat we went on a hike through the Siberian hills and forests next to the lake. It was absolutely beautiful - the snow covered pine trees and the brilliant sunset over the lake were just stunning. Now this lake is big, veeeeeeery big. It contains more water than all of the North American Great Lakes combined. It is also the deepest lake in the world and contains 1/5 of the entire world's fresh water. It is ... read more

So we had finally begun our journey on the Trans-Siberian railway. I was sharing a cabin with John, Adam R and Sarah. After a relatively uneventful afternoon and evening, we had our first of many pot noodles, made our beds, chatted a bit and went to bed. The sleep on the train was surprisingly comfortable and uninterrupted except that there was an inbuilt speaker system in our cabin which had been left on full volume and, unbeknown to us, it began playing music at 8am, meaning we woke up to the most awful sound of Russian pop butchering our much-needed sleep. Fortunately John was pretty quick to turn it off but nevertheless the damage had been done. Also by this time, the heat generated by 4 bodies in a 3x2m space was reaching dangerously high levels ... read more

Flic 6.1.09 We were up, packed and checked out of the hotel by 12 & had left our rucksacks there to colleect later, so set off for the Metro. We arrived in Tsvetnoy Boulevard & to our absolute delight, saw a Pizza Hut! After much excited jumping around, we had a lovely lunch there & left to take some photos of the area. We saw the Yuri Nikulin Circus (Moscow State Circus) & the statue of Nikulin himself, and had a stroll down the boulevard - the place is SO much nicer if you're not searching for accommodation! Our trip here didn't take much time, and we still had 7 hrs before our train, so we headed back to the Metro... Line 5 of the Metro is supposed to be the one with the nicest stations, ... read more

Hi again, it's convenient that it gets dark and cold so early here- gives me plenty of time to write blog entries. Thanks for all your comments and messages. We've just got back to Irkutsk after having a few days at Lake Baikal. Baikal is the biggest (volume) lake in the world and holds something like 20% of the planet's freshwater. Apparently it's on a fault line which is continually growing so the lake will eventually become an ocean. We took a bus there from Irkutsk that takes about 90mins on one snowy road that goes up and down hills all the way. We were headed for Listvyanka a little village on the lake-shore. The approach to the village was amazing- we could just see the massive expanse of the lake with huge snowy mountains on ... read more

Hello again, we've arrived in Siberia! The train journey from Moscow to Irkutsk was fantastic. It was everything we'd hoped for and we're so glad we went all the way with no stops! There's no way we can convey how good it was in one blog entry because so many funny things happened. But I'll have a go..... We set off on Thursday lunchtime. Unfortunately we were on a slow train- one of the ones that goes on a little detour straight after Moscow. Also it was one of the older trains. Our Russian ticket-buying skills don't stretch to phrases like 'can we go on a new train that goes fast?' so we knew it would be a lottery. In our (tiny) kupe (4 people) we had a very old bloke (who we called 'Uncle Vernon' ... read more

The scenery has become more rugged, it is starting to get more mountainous and a lot colder. Ive been talking to the Chinese girls in our Carriage and have found that they had gone to Moscow to work and were now heading home to China, they had been there 5 months and the one I spoke with had about £350 to take home after the cost of living in Moscow.... read more
