…But here is just one or two… I came at break neck speed with a razor and two peeny pennies at a boa constrictor and realised I needed neither for the situation arising and (arising)ly getting out of hand, prior to this he had told me he eats slugs for breakfast and so you can see why the situation had had to arose. Confused?1 I am at least and so I won’t end it just yet but tell you more on how it had started… Last time I blogged I ended with my intention of getting lost in Laos and that is what I certainly did. To get lost I meant to lose myself entirely; ridding me, myself and I from this brave new world. All things considered suicide didn’t seem too appealing and so I ... read more

It’s been a while and dial or three of rice cakes that I’ve written here, much has happened and could be written but only now does it feel right to conclude this last couple of months for all your spanned damn perusal. Looking back I see I invited you all to my spam filled Birthday party, I was shocked and pleased with the fact that you all made it in swanky cardboard styles. The conversations were one way but I felt you all, the cardboard to chocolate sandwich biscuits was spot on too eh?! Since this de-rigueur party I’ve been teaching Chinese kids some kind of English for the past nigh on 2 months. Sometimes it was joyous when a spark of creativity dazzles in the gloomy air, mostly it was a little mundane when you ... read more

(Timeline note: if you are all up-to-date with my blog you’ll hopefully realise that this is in fact before my current time and space i.e. this is before the blog entry on Yilong and my teaching English here, so the pastures new are now old I guess…Timeline note over) Yes I found it yet again, I enjoyed its intricate moments devoid of baddies and stationary pliers, but alas I must stumble along my inevitable path…The love was of Beijing, another city I can file into my ever-growing files of cities I could spend more time in. I would of stayed longer now if it weren’t for my shorter than short Chinese visa. So what captivated my soul there…(A musing - I’m writing this in Beijing train station waiting for my train to leave - now the ... read more

…invite you all to the best Birthday party ever…erm in Yilong, in the Sichuan province (home to the recent Earthquake and great spicy food) of China because all things being equal I will be here to celebrate my 26th year of life and no death. It should be a cracker so I’d be most pleased if everyone can make it…I realise it’s a little short notice, but I really didn’t know where I’d be for my Birthday until now. So for those of you not in the loop I find myself in this remote part of China expected to teach English to 11 to 16 year olds (the town ducks merely had "...quack quack..." to say on the matter by the by). The first week went well enough, finishing the week smothered in chalk dust I ... read more

…I reached into my backpack and found a marmot eating all my carrots, so to calm my nerves I sipped a red bull and played tic-tac-toe, while listening to Mongolian radio…I awoke, half blinded by the brilliant blue sky, from this nightmare of sorts to find I was in the middle of a Gobi desert steppe surrounded by mountains that had mouths, I wrestled out of my sleeping bag to consider how I came to be here… It started a long time ago (billions of years ago I’m told); but to me let’s say 26 years, 239 days, 3 hours and some minutes and seconds and so on that I shan’t conjure up out of my imagination to bore you so, and in all this time the only hope that stays consistent is that it doesn’t ... read more

My arrival in Mongolia was marred by the realisation that I had no idea what I was to do here for my 30-day visa, here is a tale of what I did…(I feel it is a little un-concise, un-connected and so on (due to writing it in different points of time and space), but I’m done with it now and so time to bite a bullet and upload as it is)… So from Ulan Ude (Russia) I made a border adventure, and in fact crossed it by road rather than train due to the extortionate train price. Had to get a bus to the border then get a bus through the border as you can’t cross on foot), then a taxi and then finally a cheap local night train once in Mongolia. Luckily I met some ... read more

As in the previous post I’m writing not in the place I am writing about, I’m now in Ulan Ude (see map) and so most of this is my journal edited…tripped out a little in this space and time so please expect stories that have been markedly marked with crayons… Thursday 07/08/08 So as you can see from the previous pic (Note: I’m talking to myself here and about the Lake Baikal sketch that is on the previous page - see pics when I can upload) I am at Lake Baikal and have only now written…why? Maybe I have too much to say - my mind here has been so alive that I’ve really had no opportunity to sit down, stop thinking and write - the reason now really is to chart this glorious time ... read more

So yes this a re-write as my first seemed a little too disconnected with the source as I wrote it after the happening of the journey - so I will in fact now re-write my journal entries instead to try and give you all the effect, I desire, of this journey on me. Note it is in present because it was written in the present but of course it all happened in the past I think!?! 26/07/08 Saturday The facts for the train from Moscow to Irkutsk Time - 80 hours Distance - 5175km Cost - 3600 roubles (100 euros) Class - Plastkartny (third class open bed sleeping carriage) Provisions for the body - 600 roubles (16ish euros) of lovely long lasting, so processed, food (see pic) Provisions for the mind - Books, tea and chocolate ... read more

So I made it here after two and a half months of travelling around with this goal in mind - it was nice to get over the border with no real hiccups. First stop was St Petersburg and an air bed “couch” with a Russian named Ivan ‘the (add as you wish)’. Blurry eyed, from the night bus, I made out this somewhat atypical Russian - a kind of longhaired grungy type of style to him, and that’s why I wanted to surf his couch I guess. Instantly, as expected from his profile, it was apparent he was a very intelligent and astute guy with an excellent and entertaining Americanised teenage slang kind of flow. So we got to know each other on the metro, over some pelmeni (Russian dumplings) for brekkie and a lovely trip ... read more

Firstly then let’s go back to me sitting in the industrial heart of Holland waiting for a hitch, the then; so if you’ve looked at the travel map you’ll know I got to Berlin safely (nice Afghani chap took me at high speed on the German highway!!) and then onwards I ventured to experience many things brightly lit by the souls of things, dimly lit by the hum drum of money and the darkness of the nothing…Back to the now; I find myself sitting on the front porch of a humble Estonian summerhouse on the outskirts of a small Estonian village (Kostivere) surrounded by a forest with my laptop on my lap ready to write to you and the world on how I came to be in this situation and every notably notable situation since the ... read more
