hello hello! I havent written in a while, so i have a lot of updating to do... I am in Poland!! In warsaw to be precise. We left berlin Friday lunchtime, thank god! what a hole lol Nah, it was ok. We stayed at a really lousy hostel, sharing a dorm with 14 other people haha. That was crap. We went out sight seeing and we saw some of the Berlin Wall, the Reichstag, and this other impressive looking thing (cant remember what its called lol) The best thing about Berlin central is the little red and green men on the traffic lights!! :D It was only later that we realised they are a major tourist attraction, with merchandise in every souvenir store. (photos to come when i get home!!) We were only in berlin for ... read more

We've been a little slack lately with reference to the travelblog (had a few other problems to sort out and trying to still see everything.) Well here goes, We got to Stockholm on the Friday night and what do you know, got drunk at Dannys place. Played poker and got enough to maybe cover our drinks for that night. Next day we went on the mission to book our ferry to Finland - hopefully for the Sunday arvo - unlucky. Problem was we wanted to wait till Stockholm in order to see some contacts about cheaper tickets. We ended up getting cheaper tickets on the Monday morning (7am) boat. Saturday afternoon we went for a drive in Dannys car, - cant believe it, all those Kms on the Autobahn and the highest speed I hit was ... read more

After a nice relaxing time in Brussels it was time to start the proper journey. We had a bit of a lie in and off to get a lovely brekkie of pastries - repacked again (trying unsuccessfully to reduce weight!) and then off to the station. Lovely efficient smooth Deutsche Bahn trip to Koln through some beautiful Belgian and German countryside and stepped out the station to find the enormous Cathedral towering above us. Thor got in some hearty German sustinance of Bockwurst and Sauerkraut while I wimped out with a sandwich! Finally on to our first sleeper train (36h, 2 nights) - in separate carriages thanks to Polish Law (men and women can’t sleep in the same carriage) and settled in. Somehow managed to get the oldest and dirtiest carriage on the train - only ... read more

Arrived in Warsaw at 8,30am. The first thing that really struck me was that noone speaks English. Up until now it ahd been so easy. So when Chris went up to information he had to hold up the lonely planet guide and point. We ended up finding the bus after speaking to a multi lingual homeless person near the bus stop. The three of us went for a stroll around Warsaw, saw some strutting guards before heading down to the river to get some funny photos with some strategically placed pink deer. I dont think Ive laughed as much on this trip as I did today. It was great just letting the good old Aussie humour run rampant while muching on a bbq chicken and rolls in the park. Found a nice big church and had ... read more

Today was a massive day of walking. First we went over to discover old town. Actually there is nothing old left but what has been recreated is very beautiful and well made, just not quite the original character of the city. Heading on through to new town we went to the prison which has now been destroyed. There is one small pillar still standing. It was really interesting. During the war it held 100 000 Polish people, 37 000 were killed with most of the rest going to other concentration camps and marched from the Gestapo headquarters further up the road. We then went to the Warsaw Uprising museum which is the best museum Ive ever been to. The whole thing was set up so well with interactive exhibits, memorabilia and heaps of information we ended ... read more

I am checking out today leaving Warsaw and Poland all together. So sad, I know. Next stop Vilnius, Luthuania. Walk to the bus stop to the airport in a hot day is not a pleasant goodbye, to say the least. But I manage. The bus fare to the Warsaw international airport , again, is only 2.4 zolty (less than a dollar). So there is nothing to complain. I had soup this morning for breakfast. A shop specializes in a lots of soups. Only soup. I tried soup of the day. White cabbage in a little-sour brorth and a few pieces of pork. I stopped by ROSSMANN, a German beauty and personal care supply chain, I guess in Warsaw and picked out a German-made shampoo. At checkout, the cashier spoke decent English, to my surprise. Then "Do ... read more

Warsaw, or Warszawa, is the largest city and also the capital. Unlike Krakow, it was not spared from WWII. In fact, the Nazis razed over 85% of the city. As a result, the city is not what you'd call pretty, except for a few blocks in the old town. Still, Warsaw has been one of my favorite cities so far, for atmosphere and attitude, I suppose. There are not as many tourists here, but the people didn't stare like some did in the other towns, I guess that they have too many other things to worry about. We stayed in a really cheap hostel out of the center called "Big Blue." True enough, it was really a Big Blue building, a student polytechnical dorm, rented out in the summer. It was there that I first tried ... read more

The Train pulled in the station at around 3 PM , arrived to the hostel without much problem and checked-in. Then take a walk to the Old town called Royal Way. Then the next day visit the Royal Castle. It is a reconstruction after WW II but the furniture and few decor, and several paintings are original. The food here in Warsaw is exception. I dine quite well. There is nothing better than having a cold beer in a hot summer afternoon. Then sit there watching as the world turns.... read more

Being back in Warszawa has been wonderful. I love this city and the people in it...I don't want to leave :-( so we got in around 8pm on thursday from gdańsk and took a cab to her cousins' place in the mokotów area. they've been awesome and we've had a lot of fun chilling with them...that night we went back to rasko and waited til after 3am to hang out with jarek. we went and got kebabs (awesome) and whatnot before heading back to iza and wojtek's to sleep... friday morning we met jarek in front of good 'ole McDonalds at 11 to head to Wilanów for the day. Wilanów is "Poland's answer to Versailles". While it was a really cool place, I wouldn't go about comparing it to Versailles. We toured the interiors and whatnot, ... read more

Hello everybody, Every country in Europe has their story about WWII. From the neutral--Sweden, to the "try to stay neutral"--Norway and Holland, to the participants--England. No country suffered more devastation than Poland. On September 1, Hitler's army invaded Poland without having declared war. Seventeen days later the Soviet Red Army attacked from the east. The Poles found out much later that a secret agreement was in place between the two countries to split Poland. Water and hydro was cut off. The were bombed everyday for four weeks. The Polish Army was no match for Germany's army. As France and England stood by, Warsaw was forced to capitulate having been promised honourable treatment. Warsaw was especially important for its operational potential. The plan was to turn Warsaw into a German town. The plans also called for reducing ... read more
