WARSAW - POLAND 28/9/06-29/9/06. Back into the EU again and not without some bureaucracy. Seemingly our easy passage through into Russia had caught with us heading out over the Byelorussian/Polish boarder. I’m beginning to suspect that the crew’s job may not be all fun and games after all. But we made it and ventured into Poland. This end of the trip has been very bitter-sweet knowing that the end draws closer & the further you travel west, it’s hard not to regret the fact that we were heading towards Warsaw which was our last port of call before leaving everyone once we got back to Berlin. (I apologise in advance if I start to sound like a sentimental mess) I should say something about Minsk whilst I’m here. It again is one of those places that ... read more

Woke up bright and early the next morning, threw on my Pumas and hit the pavement! I thought it only appropriate that I property acquaint myself with the neighborhood and the surrounding areas. I t’s strange…I can remember coming to this part of the city (the old town) since I was a little kid, yet its all seemed to look and feel more personal some how. Like and old acquaintance you’ve known for years, but only recently taken the time to become friends. Where am I coming up with this stuff? ... read more

When I said I was going to Poland people usually screwed up their faces - and with Mum's stories about Aunty Stasia's life in Warsaw and how the family in Australia used to send her packages of toilet paper and other basic necessities which then had to be smuggled in past the Communists - I wasn't sure if this was going to be a very fun trip. And it's true that Poland is pretty grim in parts. The people aren't given to smiling, there's a very visible police and military presence (in fact, one night we were prohibited from leaving a restaurant for an hour by some body-guard looking types who then blew up a "suspicious looking" car out front) and a lot of the buildings were bombed during WWII or are run down due to ... read more

Yes, it was a bit sad leaving for the airport without any one at home to say goodbye to. Of course I understand there are circumstances in life that are both unforeseen and unavoidable…but still. So, I zipped up the last of my cherry-red Samsonite luggage, weighed it one final time and headed out for the first leg of my trip. It deserves to be noted; I have never had a smoother journey! All flights were not only on time, but arrived at their given destinations ahead of schedule. My layover was through Amsterdam (Schipol), and the feeling of walking through those familiar terminals was absolutely ere. It has been a year and half since I last roomed those corridors, yet it very well could have been the day before. Isn’t the concept of time just ... read more

I'm going to start this blog with a bit of a recommendation. If ever you find yourself hungry in Warsaw, you have to go to Pierogarnia on Bednarska Street. Quite simply the finest dumplings you are ever likely to encounter. And before the foul minded among you snigger and snort, I'm not referring to Blackadder's Devils Dumplings (speciality of Poland though they appear to be... apparently). I'm referring, of course, to the versatile food stuff. For 12zl (about 2 quid) you get a fine helping of dumplings in any manner of stylings. There are meaty ones, vegetable ones, cheese ones, fruit ones, chocolate ones, cream ones... the list goes on. So good was our dumpling experience that we wondered how we could incorporate a Dumplingry (that's my word for a Dumpling joint) into Viks cafe plans. ... read more

Ok.... it's probably cheating to use an actual city name as a title for a post, but it is in keeping with the theme, and it is a Joy Division song title, so I feel I should be excused. Anyway, we have now made it to Poland. It is quite a contrast to Slovakia. It is much more developed for one. And nobody speaks English. And there are less tourists. All of which make it a great country to travel through (if only we'd learned some Polish before we left). We also seem to have left the worst ravages of the American package tourists behind us. I should clarify what I mean here (American bashing has evolved to such a level amongst backpackers here that it is actually blatant racism, which is actually shocking, and quite ... read more

I am in so much pain, but its great!!! I got my tattoo done yesterday, its so cool!!! Well, where do i start?? I last left you with the intention of heading to the Rock Club for a night of metal-goodness. We rocked up bout 9pm, looked dead from outside, we very nearly bailed, but we went in, and it was packed!! Cost us $5 to get in, and we had free local beer all night!!! The place was a converted war tunnel, with graveyard murals all over the walls, motorbike regalia everywhere and a stage at one end. They played awesome music all night, and we were requesting songs and getting pissed as farts (for the first time since being in Berlin mind you!), and we met a few cool people, so in summary a ... read more

Krakow - Warsaw (Train) 16 August Warsaw is the geographical, political and economical heart of Poland. After Poland and Lithuania was unified in 1569, Warsaw was made the capital of the single state and has remained the capital of Poland ever since. Between 1795 and the early 1900’s Poland did not exist as it was carved up between Russia, Austria and Prussia. The treaty of Versailles changed this and again declared Poland a Sovereign State. Warsaw became a city of great prosperity however with impressive buildings, plenty of parks, monuments palaces and of course churches constructed from the 18th century. Unfortunately WWII changed all of that. Not much of the old Warsaw is left. We visited the Warsaw Historical Museum, which shows a half hour documentary that pieces together footage of the city before, during and ... read more

Sorry that it has been a while since my last entry. I have been busy traveling and thinking. It has been an eye opening experience traveling with my dad. It is interesting to see how many similar traits we have in common. Some are good and some are eh. I am working on being a kinder, patience, and more understanding person. Always good to realize this sooner than later. Okay, back to my travels. The rest of the sites we say were the Novodevichy Cemetery where Khruchev is burried, the convent next dor, a Russian market where they sell a lot of trinkets, Lenins tomb which was sureal (felt like he could get up at any time and walk away becuase he is preserved so well), the Great Patriotic War Museum (touching hall that has 2.6 ... read more
