I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Torun, Poland (fomerly Thorn, Prussia). Recently discovered it is the birthplace of my paternal great grandfather. Can I get by with English and some very basic German (and quite a bit of French, but not likely of much help there)?
All help gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Torun is really nice and it is heavily visited because of the birth place of Nicolaus Copernicus which I found really interesting;-) You can easily get an English speaking guide or convince some student to give you a tour ;-) (there is many Universities over there and most of young generation speak good English or German) Check below website as well;-)

When you are there I recommend to visit Malbork castle (2h drive from Torun) founded in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights ;-)

enjoy,
B

I never was in Torun. Recommend Wroclaw and Cracow (especially second city with monuments, history and atmosphere)! I was there one year ago and it was really nice time! I stayed in Flamingo Hostel and I met many nice people. I would like to go to Torun in future! Reply to this

I would do that for sure. Besides the heritage of Copernicus, there's a lot to do around ginger bread (if you're into that ) 😊
