It's not every day that I'm setting foot in a new country. I'm not that far from 80 countries visited...but it take some effort to add one more at each step. Well, for sure I could add few more by heading to the Balkans (2010), or the Baltic (hopefully 2011)...or Central America (soon...maybe...). Some of my friends will also tell you that I should not put Liechtenstein in my count as we did not sleep there. But same problem as for Luzern...here you pay a lot...for not much in term of sleeping "quality". So we ended up spending the night in Dornbirn, few miles north of Vaduz. Liechtenstein is a small country...and yes we did verify this. The is mainly one single main road connecting few villages. I had not much info in terms of what to ... read more

Today Matt got to cross a pretty major item off of his "To Do" list...we walked across a country. Yep, a whole country. You're probably wondering which country...Liechtenstein. For those of you not up on your European geography Liechtenstein is located between Switzerland and Austria and before you go getting too impressed it's only about 8 miles across. Liechtenstein is the 6th smallest country in the world and is about 62 square miles. It's also the only German-speaking country that doesn't border Germany. Before you run off and search Google for the smallest country in the world (you know you want to) it's the Vatican. You never would have thought of that one, would you? I know I didn't :) It wasn't just Matt and I on this trek...we went with our friends Crystan, Paul, April, ... read more

Four countries, two days, more walking than you can imagine. It's a beautiful thing. Monday morning, Libor and I were at the train station at the ungodly hour of 5:30am to catch our train at 5:45. At about 10 we pulled into Salzburg, though we were late in catching our connecting train since we weren't travelling with ÖBB , but die Deutsche Bahn. Let us be a little prejudiced, ok? We've lived in Austria for almost 6 months now, of course there's animosity between us and Germany :) Anyways, after waiting a half-hour in Salzburg, we boarded the train, took a small ride through Germany, went through Innsbruck, and at about 3:30 on Monday afternoon arrived in Feldkirch, one of the western-most cities in Austria, which only took us about 10 hours to get to. There isn’t really that much to see in Lichtenstein but seeing as it is its own country (the 6th smallest in the world) we thought it at least deserved its own blog. Actually we mainly just wanted to tick it off the countries visited map! We spent a night just out of the capital Vaduz, which was pretty and very small. We walked up to the Prince’s castle but as he actually resides there we obviously didn’t get a look inside. Unfortunately neither of us needs dentures just yet which was a huge shame, Lichtenstein being the world’s biggest producer of dentures! ... read more

Today I had one of those spectacular travel experiences that makes people want to spend there whole lives traveling around and doing nothing else. In fact, today was above in beyond anything I could have thought about. In fact, I may have achieved a state of travel nirvana, and ruined traveling for everyone else. How? I went to Liechtenstein. But first I set out to explore Feldkirch. It didn't take long. But it was really nice. I also went on a short hike recommended by the hostel clerk where I got great views of the town and the neighboring countryside. At one point, I could see Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland all at once. I like this place. The hostel is awesome, the scenery is great, the people are really friendly and helpful, and I would definitely ... read more

After an eventful drive from Interlaken, Switzerland to Triesenberg, Liechtenstein whereby we were caught in an avalanche and had to reclaulate our journey that last 5 hours.... we arrived in Liechtenstein weary but excited to be in a country thats probably smaller than most english towns. But we soon learnt that what Liechtenstein lacked in size, it certainly made up in spirit and atmosphere. If i'm truly honest, i fell in love with the place... we stayed in Triesenberg, On our 2nd day in Liechtenstein, we discovered a personal highlight of the trip... The most eastern part of the country hugging the Tyrol mountains on the Austrian border, a town called Malbun. We set off from our hotel in Triesenberg and weaved up the mountain roads through a town called Steg. 2 mins later (in Liechtenstein, ... read more

March 19-21st Well the next part of our adventure brought me to Liechtenstein. No not many people know where that is let alone visit there but I actually chose this part of the trip, though I have no idea why. To begin, in case I havent told you this already, Liechtenstein is the 6th smallest country and the world's largest producers of dentures. Random yes, but I have been tellign everyone I know because I find it interesting that these are the fun facts listed in the guide book. Anyway on our first day there Andrea and I walked though the entire town and finally found a grocery store. Man this country is not cheap! Anyway on our way back to the hostel I realized that my nose ring had fallen out and so we went ... read more

... only one step away. Like four - oh crap! No, this blog is supposed to be about four COUNTRIES in one day... not seasons. Oh well... :P Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to another addition of Grotsky's Blog! This episode is brought to you by McDonald's Diam McFlurry "we think it's worth sitting on a fence for" Please however be advised that there is a slight delay on the 'susan's world (focusing specifically on particular regions of Germany, France and England) tour' blog service due to a signaling malfunction at laptop and card reader stations (can you tell that I've been hanging around in a lot of London tube stations?). Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring ... except for Elliott who put off packing for his European trip until Christmas Eve... Flying out on Christmas day was a bit of a worry for me. I didn't know how I would feel spending Christmas in airports and planes. However, this thought was quickly overcome by the amazing Christmas that I spent with my family on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning before going to the airport. Of course this didn't mean that things were going to be easy for me ... My original flight was supposed to be from Cincinnati to Atlanta to connect to my flight to Zurich. Flying standby, I missed my small hop to Atlanta. However, my luggage didn't seem to miss that flight ... but ... read more
