The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719; it became a sovereign state in 1806. Until the end of World War I, it was closely tied to Austria, but the economic devastation caused by that conflict forced Liechtenstein to enter into a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral), the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth. Shortcomings in banking regulatory oversight have resulted in concerns about the use of the financial institutions for money laundering. Liechtenstein has, however, implemented new anti-money-laundering legislation and recently concluded a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with the US. To be updated

Traveling to Luzern Today we had to leave Kitzbuhel behind despite all of the fun we had enjoyed there. After breakfast we packed, checked out and got on the road. The trip to Luzern was a bit longer than we had taken in a while (4.5 hours) so we wanted to make sure we got on the road pretty early. Liechtenstein… Tom Tom sometimes takes us on routes that seem a little circuitous but always seem to get us where we are going eventually. Today’s circuitous route took us through the principality of Liechtenstein. The country is situated in the [View Full Entry]

Well... Where do I start? Cherie has made me write this blog as she wanted to waste about as much time writing this as she did hanging out in Liechtenstien. I was already in trouble for the 9+hrs train ride back through Switzerland (which was beautiful) and spending a night in a little backwater town called Sargans which was more expensive than i predicted. Especially when she realised we could've gone straight from Venice to Innsbruck/Austria in about 6hrs. All this just to see a little country called Liechtenstein!!! My only defence is that Shelly and the team from the 'Great [View Full Entry]

Today we embarked on a 10 day road trip around Europe. We have a vague idea of where we want to go, but will also let the road take us where it will. Our target area for today was Fussen, Germany and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. After a confusing drive from the city center to the freeway (GREEN signs mean freeway, blue is side roads, white is tiny streets), we decided to detour off to Appenzel for lunch. Appenzel is famous for its cheeses. We had a nice warm bowl of pumpkin soup (it was a foggy, chilly day) followed by [View Full Entry]

After heading out of Germany this morning on our way back to Switzerland, we stopped very briefly in the small country of Liechtenstein to have lunch. We are once again back to the amazing clear rivers. I also took the opportunity to get my passport stamped since no one seems to do that anymore. Cost me 1.50 euro but it was worth it and how many people are going to have? Also got off a postcard to back home because how many people have been to Liechtenstein? It's a very small country in between Austria and Switzerland. Only has 30,000 people [View Full Entry]

As we were leaving Switzerland we filled up with petrol ready to head for Liechtenstein. For those of you who don't know its the 4th smallest (6km across, 26km up) country in the world and its between Switzerland and Austria. When looking at an overall map of Europe, you'd probably skip right over the tiny, landlocked country of Liechtenstein. Bordered by Switzerland to the West and Austria to the East, it's one of the smallest independent sovereign states in Europe. The country is only about 16 miles long and 4 miles wide. From Zurich, Switzerland I chose to take a day trip to the capital city of Vaduz. It's really quite simple. Just an hour train ride to the city of Sargans, SW and then a 30 minute bus ride on to Vaduz. Upon arriving in the capital, I was [View Full Entry]
