At 2599 m Grauspitz is Liechtenstein’s highest mountain and one of the most arduous and sketchiest peaks I’ve tackled. What you might just be able to make out on the summit photos are my violently shaking legs knowing that I have to get down again. A sheerer than sheer ridge followed by pathless seemingly vertical scree dropping into oblivion. Spoiler alert: I made it down alive. Though for a few days texting was painful due to the thistle spines in my fingertips as grabbing the spiky beasties was often all that prevented certain doom. Why visit Liechtenstein? Well my train passed within sight of it so it seemed rude not to get off and have a look. As for why I was in Switzerland; see the previous blog. Unlike everyone else on the bus to ... read more

This is one blog of an intended occasional series, reflecting on travels to the Micro-States of Europe (Liechtenstein, San Marino, Monaco, Malta etc). Our entry point to Vaduz in Liechtenstein was Zurich. This is a city so eye wateringly expensive that on arrival, you can feel your wallet curling itself into a protective ball like a hedgehog. After the single overnight stay in the centre of of the city, it was on to our destination for the weekend; Liechtenstein. This double-landlocked, 62 square kilometres sized, pissant principality receives only around 37,000 tourists a year. One of its few claims to fame is that it leads the world in false teeth manufacturing (around 20% of global sales). Due to the absence of an airport, country does take some getting to for a disinterested casual tourist. The train ... read more

It is fair to say today didn't quite go to plan. First, it was raining and cold when we set off we put all of our wet weather and warm gear on. It wasn't long however before it wamed up and started to dry so we had to stop and take off some layers. I was a bit worried as the SatNav said 500+ Kilometres to our hotel in Liechtenstein. I had reckoned on about 200 miles and I know that didn't stack up. Looking at the route plan, it all looked right so we carried on carefully. The ride out of the Black Forrest was good and the route was largely single track twisty and very quiet. Once out of the forest we headed towards the north bank of Boden See, a very large lake ... read more

Another day, another scenic rail journey - were it not for the sheer cost of all this, it would be pleasant to allow this lifestyle to run on forever. The tiny nation of Liechtenstein is one of the world's 2 double-landlocked countries (the other being Uzbekistan), and is easily reachable by train from Zurich, by making one's way to the Swiss border town of Sargans. The scenery en route to Sargans comes into its own, and makes for the kind of vistas which one would stereotypically associate with the Swiss countryside. First port of call in Liechtenstein was the nation's one and only ski resort of Malbun, which required two buses to reach, and the latter half of the journey involved an ever-winding, ever-climbing route which peaked when the resort town had been reached. The mountainous ... read more

So, this happens all the time….you’re sitting there having a very nice conversation when somebody interjects “I will be vacationing in Liechtenstein this year!” Okay…..that was a boldface lie. In all reality, unless you’re a fairly well-schooled geography student from Europe or really like to ski, you may not have spent much time thinking about the sixth smallest and one of two doubly land-locked nations in the world. When it comes to being small, this principality is roughly 25 km (15 miles) north to south and barely 15 km (9 miles) wide. Suree, it’s bigger than Vatican City and Monaco, but you could easily drive right past it without blinking. They don’t have their own money (they use the Swiss franc) and haven’t had an army for, well forever. They finally granted women the right to ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! This day has really been packed to the brim! We started the day with a steady breakfast together with Brigitt and the other couch-surfer, Tim from England. Today we also met Sam, he's a nice American who is living with Brigitt and Jürg for 2 months while studying. First thing on our schedule today was to go to Liechtenstein, first you take a bus to Schaan where you can then switch to Vaduz or to Feldkirch which is in Austria. When we learned about this and that our Swisspass is valid there as well we decided to go there after Vaduz! Reaching Vaduz takes roughly 20 minutes from Buchs and said and done we started our journey there. The weather at first was quite bad with heavy rains so Brigitt and Tim ... read more

We came, we saw, and we checked in on Facebook! One of the smallest countries in the world, only 25km long and 6km wide, Liechtenstein is famous for exporting dentures...apparently...and has one of the most expensive McDonalds we have ever been to – not much change from €20 for a regular meal and a burger without the burger! Beautiful view though...xxx... read more

Munique, como ... read more

Vaduz Liechtenstein 2 Aug 2013 After driving through more mountainous country and through many, many, tunnels in Austria from Imst, including the Strenger Tunnel which was 15 kms long, we arrived at Vaduz which is the capital of a little country of 160 square kms, Liechtenstein – and not a metre longer!!! Its population is about 36,000. Vaduz is the residence of the Princely family and seat of Government. Liechtenstein is covered with mountains and valleys. We found the people really friendly and helpful. We visited the Information Centre who gave us all the info on the country. There is a castle up on the hill and we learned that it was the best restored castle in all of Europe and is owned by the Princely Family. Prince Alois is the reigning monarch today. Unfortunately for ... read more

Today started off with a drive to the country of Liechtenstein. At approximately only 20 kilometers in length, it's not too much ground to cover! We started off with a visit to the castle in Vaduz, where the royal family lives, followed up by a visit to an old Catholic church. After a very nutritious lunch at McDonalds (where Donna had a salsa bacon chicken sandwich, who knew?), we walked around a shopping district for a little while, got our Liechtenstein magnet, and headed back for Switzerland. Next stop, Appenzel. The scenery on the drive was amazing, like nothing we've ever seen. Appenzel is the Swiss equivalent of the American Ozarks, and although we didn't see any hillbillies, the mix of houses and other buildings was unique. Were planning to take in a few more sights, ... read more
