I did a day trip to Assisi today. It is only 20 minutes away by train. When I arrived in Assisi I got a bus from the train station to the town proper. I walked down to the centre and immediately fell in love with the town. It has small cobbled streets with beautiful buildings flanking all the roads. It is the kind of town that you could easily get lost in but not be at all bothered about it. I went for a wqonder and had a look at the duomo as well as St Francis' basilica and other churches. I then headed up to rocca maggiore. This is a castle perched high above the town. I had a good look around there and climbed the towers to get amazing views of the town and ... read more

OK I arrived in Perugia early this afternoon at half 12ish. I left my bag at the station as I knew that the hostel would be shut. I went for a nice walk around the town after getting the minimetro service up the hill then walking from teh minimetro station to the town without realising that there were escalators to get you to the top. Ah well. Perugia is a very nice small town. Even though it is the capital of Umbria it is still has a very provincial feel about it. I spent a couple of hours wondering around and fell in love with the town. I then stopped at a pattiserie for a croissant filled with proscuto ham and a soft cheese and a flaky croissant for a few euros. I then went for ... read more

Day 14 Perugia Every hilltown has a different layout. Trevi was straight up the side of a hill; Spoleto was surrounded by a valley; Montefalco was at the end of a ridge. Perugia is on the top of several hills: a central one that has been inhabited for more than 2000 years, and slightly lower ones that have been built upon later. We are staying on one of the lower hills, just outside the Etruscan walls. After a very quiet night, we woke up to dark, cloudy skies, and rain by the time we went to breakfast. The hotel has free van service to the town center, and since it was pouring, we decided to take it. The desk personnel called up the very surly driver who dropped us and a Dutch couple off at....who knows? ... read more

Day 12 Hanging out in Spoleto The weather was wonderful again today: crisp and sunny. We did a lot of walking: over the Ponte delle Torre to a church we saw on our hike, around the Rocca, and back to the church I'd visited when Bill was ill. We are now packed and off to Perugia tomorrow for a three day stay. It has been fun having a kitchen and being able to shop and get to know merchants a bit (I love being greeted with "Ciao bella"!)...I'll miss that! Spoleto is lively and full of culture, history, and nature...but there is a much too noisy nightlife that passes right in front of our apartment....we never did figure it out. Cars start pouring through the little intersection around 11:00pm, coming from below and heading back down ... read more

Bon Journo! Today we were suppose to have a beautiful, relaxing day at Lake Trasimene and take a boat out to Maggoirre Island. It was a beautiful day as we left the hostel this morning and headed to the “mini metro” which we took to the train station. We hopped on the train for what we thought was to be a 30 minute train ride. When it time to get off for at the little town next to the lake Dr. Lees got us all to stand up and head towards the doors. But on this type of train the doors do not open automatically so we stood at the doors for a second waiting for them to open and then the train started moving again. To add to the confusion, the train station in that ... read more

9:33 This morning we headed out to see several vineyards, but Dr. Lees surprised us by having our bus driver stop at the long-lost Etruscan tomb which we had tried to see earlier but hadn’t been able to because of the rain and not knowing how to get there. He has been trying to see this for 3 years and hasn’t been able to find it. He even called the place and they couldn’t tell him out to get there! So we started the morning off by looking at more Etruscan tombs. These were very different from the necropolis at Orvieto. All of these tombs were from one family and were built over such a span of time that they never were organized like the Orvieto tombs. These were also not made out of stone blocks, ... read more

9:40 pm It was another early morning as we headed out at 7:45 to Orvieto. Our plans were suppose to be to head to a winery in the afternoon for a little wine tasting but the plans feel through and we were left with an entire day in Orvieto. Since we had lots of time, Dr. Lees decided to stop in a little town called “Todi” which he had never been to but Esteban had recommended to grab a little breakfast and see the cathedral. Todi, go figure, is located at the top of a hill! Most of the time visitors have to take a little lift up to the top of the hill but the lift was broken so the bus we rented was permitted to drive us to the top. We grabbed some delicious ... read more

10:06 pm This morning we headed out to Assisi, the home of Saint Francis and Lady Claire. We hoped on a bus for a 45 minute drive to Assisi and got a quick nap in along the way. Our first stop in Assisi was the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Angels. This Baroque Cathedral was built around the place where Saint Francis chose to live out the rest of his life in a little one room church and the place where he laid down on the earth and died. Assisi, like Gubio is built on a hill. Back in Francis’s time the top of the hill was reserved for the highest class and then the class rank went down as you went down the hill. So the place where Francis (who believed in giving away ... read more

5:35 pm Bon journo! This morning we slept in and headed to Saint Lorenzo’s for mass at 11:30. The service wasn’t quite what we all were expecting. After seeing the intense and awesome artwork adorning almost every surface of the church we expected the service to leave us feeling as awestruck as the church itself but it was a pretty basic service. There was a choir that sat off to the left of the alter that sang all of the songs and there weren’t song books for us to follow along :(. It is reaaaaaly hard to stay awake during a sermon that is all in Italian. After church a few of us had a picnic on the steps of the cathedral and then our group headed to the Archeological Museum of Perugia. The Museum shows ... read more
