Perugia, day one and two Oh boy, I don't even know where to start.   Perugia began with our host, Paul, greeting us at the train station.  We drove to his house, which was an adventure in itself.  First off, he drives a Range Rover in Umbria (the state we are in).  I knew something was a little different, because it's twice the size of any vehicle here.  Paul lives at "Il Castello di Mongiovino," which lies at the top of the hillside covered in olive trees, overlooking the entire town below. His driveway is at least a mile long, most of it directly uphill, and all of it pothole-riddled gravel.  Awesome!  His home is one of a few buildings that make up the estate. They are all an amazing sight to see. Hundreds of years ... read more

It is clearly no secret to anyone who knows me, or has ever met me, or even has just casually passed me in the street that I am a chocoholic. So when I saw that there was a chocolate festival in Perugia I knew that I had to go. Also, to anyone who knows me, it is no secret that I am a professional procrastinator, so naturally I did not actually book the trip till the night before. BUT nonetheless I booked it in time! (We can just call it spontaneity, not laziness) Meredith and I, with the accompaniment of two other brave Bentley girls, headed out at 8:30am with nothing on our minds but the sweet chocolate concoctions that we would be devouring today. Now let me explain a little bit about the Eurochocolate Festival. ... read more

On Sunday, the festival closed with gigs by three Latin pianists: Eddie Palmieri, Michel Camilo and Chucho Valdes. Anat Cohen played on the restaurant stage next to the arena and also guested for a solo with Palmieri. Now, back in London till we set off for Scotland, we've put together a short pictorial retrospective of our trip through France and Italy. ... read more

Today, we'll rely on a few pictures of the free gigs and the surroundings to give an impression of the festival. As for the haricots, we learned that this was the Creole origin of the word zydeco. It means the times are hard.... read more

David bought a copy of the Times from a news stand, to see the announcement of Tom's "Outstanding" result in the Bar Vocational Course. Walking along the Corso, he felt like the Complete British Tourist, in his shorts and hat, carrying yesterday's newspaper. Rather than stand in a heaving, sweaty throng all evening, we decided to watch Prince from the relative comfort of the stepped terrace. This required us to be in the queue when the gates opened, two and a half hours before the scheduled start. We bought a picnic at the Coop: anchovies, artichoke hearts, pate, bread and cherries, with lots of water. In the event, we could have followed the example of the many locals who turned up at 915 pm and squeezed into every remaining inch of space; but that wouldn't have ... read more

Wednesday At 3pm, Jane and David went to an event billed as "Jazz on Film" at the theatre. It proved to be a selection of recordings of performances by great soloists, from Louis Armstrong to Wes Montgomery, introduced by an Italian expert. Ellington was well represented, with two tunes featuring respectively Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves. We saw Roland Kirk on a number called "Three in One Without the Oil", playing three saxes at once, then soloing on flute and adding harmonies by blowing into a wooden flute through his right nostril. After the films, Italian trumpeter Marco Tamburini performed a set of originals with a pianist, a drummer, a string quartet and various electronic devices to modify his sound. In the evening, in the bar of the Brufani were Santana's rhythm section and Sergio Mendes. ... read more

Tuesday Lunch was finely sliced Parma ham from the deli in the Coop, with melon. For supper, we cooked local courgettes and aubergines from the market with fresh pasta, and diced some pears to accompany the pecorino. When we reached the arena, it was still an hour before the scheduled start of the gig, but already the tiered concrete seats at the rear were full and a large crowd was sitting on the boards in front of the stage. The seating had been removed. We found a space near the centre and settled down with beers and water. After a few minutes, and still long before the start, people stood up and surged forward, closing ranks. There was a slight breeze but the heat would have been debilitating except for the anticipation of the music. Santana ... read more

Saturday Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Marcus Miller led a tribute to Miles in the packed arena. As we'd eaten a late lunch on the terrace of the flat, we made the mistake of not having dinner before the gig. The support (a young Japanese pianist with a rhythm section) played an hour's set and the main band started around 1040 pm. We dined on slices of pizza and cans of Coke in a side street at 1 am. Sunday After passing a hot afternoon in Assisi, we bought some small bottles of peach juice in a cafe. Back at the flat, we mixed it with champagne that we'd brought from Ville d'Arce, to make bellinis. Dinner was on the terrace of the Ristorante del Sole, with a view across the valley to Assisi on the ... read more

Today we went to Perugia and Assis, which meant waking up earlier than usual (a full hour!!!) and taking a two hour bus ride, during which I think everyone, including Simone and Tim, our directors, slept. It was unbelievably hot in Umbria today. BUT that may have to do with the proper church attire everyone had to wear in order to go into the churches we saw. Did you know that Assis has 29 churches? We only was 4 and I was exhausted. Besides the heat and sore feet, I loved both places. Assis more because of the white and pink stone that is particular to the city and because it's just a better view. Perugia was a little too big city, yet still a little city in the middle of Umbria, which doesn't make sense ... read more

At Perugia airport, we waited among a crowd of Brits for the Ryanair flight, and picked Beck up just after 11am. The flat proved to be very close to the festival venues, in a row of houses by a steep staircase and an aqueduct, with a terrace at the back, shaded by a walnut tree and vines. There was a small general food store in the piazza at the top of the steps and we stocked up with basics: milk, bread, fruit juices, bottled water. Later in the afternoon, we met Tom and Stacey, who arrived in the piazza by bus from the railway station. After dinner in the Piazza IV Novembre, near a stage where an American R&B band was playing, we joined the passeggiata and strolled up to the garden by the Brufani hotel. ... read more
