I know it's been a while since I last posted, that last week or so was crazy! I think the last time I posted was a week and a half ago? I'll cover the past week and hope that's enough! The week flew by!! I started Monday thinking I still had a week and a half left, and befre I knew it we were leaving for the airport. Monday afternoon a very small group of us went on a tour of Santa Maria Novella, which was big, but pretty empty. That was most of the afternoon and then we bad karaoke that night, which was a lot of fun. I once again got by without having to sing, but I got plenty of pictures of others singing!! Tuesday was low key, no big things happened. Wednesday ... read more

I don't remember what my last post was about, so I'll just start from Friday. We had our midterm (which I got a 96 on!) and we watched a weird movie (which I just remembered I told you about). Then we just spent time in Florence's center until dinner. For dinner we made pasta with red sauce and about 6 of us gathered with our individual dishes to have a semblance of a group dinner. Then pretty much everyone went out to a club called Red Garter, where there happens to be karaoke, but I'll get to that later. Saturday was the first day I got to sleep in since the second or third week, I believe. It was great. Once Liana and I finally got up and dressed, we met Sarah at the food market ... read more

Not much has happened since yesterday. I studied for my midterm, which was surprisingly easy. After I finished my test in like 30 minutes, we kinda just wasted time until 11 when all the Italian classes got together and watched a movie called Italians. Since a vast majority of the movie's in Italian, I really don't know what the premise is, or what happened besides these two guys drive stolen Ferraris from Italy to Dubai for an illegal big shot race and what happens during all that. Technically we just watched half of it (I think) because there were several actors that I definitely didn't see. After that we spent more time that I wanted to spend at the San Lorenzo Market. This is the market that all sorts of leather is sold, shoes, clothes and ... read more

I think the last time I posted I was about to make dinner (?). Well, it was a success!! So yummy :) it was just like being home. That was Tuesday night. Wednesday was rainy. That's my main descriptor for yesterday. I don't really remember class, since everyday is basically the same, but afterwards I rushed back to the hotel to change and grab an unbrella because rain was in forecast in Siena, then ran back to school where we were meeting to go to Siena. During the walk to where the bus was, it started raining, instead of just random, infrequent drops. Then we got on the bus. The drive to Siena is SUPPOSED to be a little more than an hour. THREE AND A HALF hours later....we were still eight miles out of Siena. ... read more

Yum yum yum! Toady during class we went to the Mercato Centrale, which is this HUGE food market in this old building (but let's be honest, pretty much ever building in Florence is old). We went with the excuse of asking vendors (in Italian) about their products, but really it was to get us out of the classroom and to the market. There were stalls of bread, fish, meat, deli meats, cheese, fruits and vegetables, oils and spices, and prepared foods (I think that's all....). It smelled good in a few places, but mostly like fish and cheese (like sharp, smelly cheese), so I lingered by the fruit stands and ran by the fish and cheese ones. I bought strawberries, bread and green beans, all fresh. Tonight it's my turn to make dinner :) So YESTERDAY. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Marche » Urbino July 23rd 2011

Today is my last full day in Urbino. I'm both sad and happy to be leaving for Florence tomorrow. On the one hand, Urbino's beautiful and intimate. I know people here and where everything is. On the other hand, it's small and pretty secluded. Urbino is a town, I'm a city girl. Florence is going to be amazingly big and full, just the way I like it. Also, moving to Florence means I've completed a semester of Italian, survived three weeks in a foreign country without calling my mom too much (every other day isn't that much, right? Kidding.) and only have two and a half more until I'm home. I'll be sad to leave, but happy to be home and then back at 'Nova. Not much has happened since my last post. I studied for ... read more

Yesterday afternoon most of the group went to this park area and did sporty activities. I'm proud to say that I participated :) I played ultimate frisbee. Yeah, that's right. However, I didn't get the frisbee much, since my aim isn't too great...I did get an interception :) After that a much smaller group of us met up with our Italian friends and BBQ'ed. Italian BBQs consist of grilling sausage and sitting around, not much different an American ones to be honest, with the exception of everyone speaking (or trying to speak) Italian. Today I have a wonderful nap planned and studying since my final is in TWO DAYS!!! It rained a little last night and some this morning and it's MUCH cooler. I can now sleep under my covers :) These next two days (today ... read more

Yesterday afternoon was so much fun!! Liana (my roommate), Sarah, Lien, Sofia, SJ and I went to the beach in Fano with 3 Italian guys we met during basketball and soccer. I played beach volleyball and succeeded in falling backwards twice in failed attempts to hit the ball. After that we rushed back, ate dinner, did homework then ran to karaoke. So much fun!! At first it was mostly just dancing to older songs (Grease and Cotton-Eyed Joe, and yes, I did the dance) then more current ones came on. Then the mic came out. It was hilarious and painful because no one singing could actually sing. Y'all will be happy to know that I DID NOT sing, at least with a mic. Then blissful sleep :) Today we're going to a park to okay volleyball, ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice July 18th 2011

This weekend was crazy!! Venice was packed because the Festa de Redentore was Saturday. It's Venice's celebration of the end of the plague. But I'll start at the beginning of the trip. It took a while to get to Venice, but once we were there we isn't stop. The group met up with a tour guide who showed us around the streets between San Marco and the Rialto. After that we were given free reign of the city. All I really did was walk around some then went to dinner on Lido, the small island a little south of Venice. I loved that island. It's like a little beach town! Saturday we got up and went to Murano to see the glass workshops that are strictly on the island. All Venetian glass comes from there. The ... read more
