After the glowing reports from the jazz festival the night before, we decided it was worth the journey in to Perugia to see what all the fuss was about. Obviously nothing too early but we found ourselves a parking spot without too much stress and began the long trek up to the town centre. A bit of wandering and we stumbled across a great band called Funk Off, who were performing in the Main Street. Much to the girls’ horror, their funky tunes inspired some parental dancing, but luckily they found some cousins to share their mortification with. The heat and the dancing were becoming too much so we wandered some more before settling on a restaurant for lunch. Some gelato before beginning the downwards trek to the baking hot car. Back to the house for ... read more

Day 20 May 15-18 Ravenna, Italy We caught a train to Perugia via Bologna and Firenze and arrived at 14 25 and was greeted by Beatrice. We were shipped back to their apartment and promptly given lunch. We then headed out so Margy could buy some shoes for Kate. On our way there Segio was doing over 130 in a 90 zone and Jan was having a melt down. We know that the speed signs are only suggestions. We finally made it home and after dinner, Beatrice gave Margy and I our birthday presents. Then we had a choice of limoncello or mandarino. The next day Margy needed to exchange the boots she bought for Katie and on the way Chris Jan and I were dropped off at Collestrada. We bought some clothing and Chris and ... read more

In the 20s Coppa della Perugina was an international car race invented by Giovanni Buitoni, the owner of the confectionery company “La Perugina“. At the beginning of the last century when the phenomenon of car racing was affecting more and more people, from 1924 until 1927 a handful of sportsmen stimulated by Giovanni Buitoni organized on the flat land below the city of Perugia a circuit race called Coppa della Perugina. The success was so important that when the race ceased (for reasons not related to the will of the organizers) a very strong memory, never faded over the years. So much so that, just after the World War II, Alberto Andreani, Chairman of the Automobile Club, and Bruno Buitoni, Chairman of Perugina, made the Coppa della Perugina come back. Unfortunately, as in the past, after ... read more

23rd March Perugia glass #heygo http://www.heygo.com After more than one hundred and fifty years the Moretti Caselli Studio is still working; Maddalena, who represents the fifth generation, carries on the family tradition. Maddalena Forenza was born in 1980. As soon as she was the right height – work-table level – she started to work seriously, or almost, reproducing her drawings with small scraps of coloured glass. Some more years went by, but passion and desire to learn increased, and so one day mother and daughter really did begin to work together, and Maddalena finally reached a decision: she would carry on the family activity. At present Maddalena executes and restores stained glass windows: it is a unique production because she uses the painting methods which were rediscovered, studied and revised by Francesco Moretti, b... read more

http://www.heygo.com 18th March - Traditional Umbrian hand weaving techniques. A Franciscan Church - What a fascinating location for our tour of a working museum of traditional Umbrian textiles. Dating back to 1212, it is the oldest Franciscan Church in Perugia and one of the first Franciscan settlements in Italy. The name Saint Francis of the Women derives from the fact that in 1252 the convent was handed over to the Benedictine nuns by the Franciscan monks. The monastery was abandoned many times throughout the centuries as a result of it being in such close proximity to the city walls. It was for the same reason that the monastery was closed in 1810 and it was transformed into an educational institute for poor young girls. Another use that followed early in the 19th century was as a ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 11th February - Perugia The other day the skies were grey when I visited Perugia but today The sun was shining & the sky was blue! We were in the main square. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo was initiated in 1345 and finished in 1490 and it looks rather worn with age. The front façade is a quite plain but the left side is much more interesting. The strange pulpit protruding from the wall was where St. Bernardino da Siena preached, when he visited Perugia in 1425 and 1427. Bernadino was a traveling preacher with a weak voice and a powerful and captivating imagery. Whenever he visited an Italian town, he drew large crowds even though his sermons started at dawn and lasted 3-4 hours. He talked about moral corruption, After his death, he was ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 8th February - Perugia - Italy Perugia is considered the green heart of Italy due to it’s location in the centre of the country as shown on the map that Patrizia, our guide, showed at the start of our tour overlooking the surrounding area of the city with great views. Patrizia made her way down the 700 year old steps to the Etruscan Arch, one of the 7 remaining arches that served as an entrance to the city of Perugia in ages past. Constructed in the 3rd century BC, this arch is one of the oldest pieces of architecture in the city and is considered to be the best remaining example of the cities original defences. The front façade of the arch features some of the original latin inscriptions. We continued our walk overlooking the ... read more

Geo: 43.1073, 12.4194Meanwhile, back in the tiny Yotel room....I zonked out for a solid 3 hours or so, and Dejo got some reasonable rest as well. When we woke up to the alarm at about 7, Dejo was feeling quite a bit better, and we made our way to the terminal. Or rather, the lounge.May I just say, the Air France staff was simply lovely and terribly helpful, just all around? I'm a fan.We had a little breakfast, and then moved to a couple of armchairs to wait out the morning. Now we had a little re-planning to do.The plan had been to land in Rome, get to our hotel near the Colosseum, have a tiny tour of the area, and the next morning, take a train to Orvieto where we would pick up the car, and some ... read more
